This lady of 81y lives alone and GN was a great source of company for her. These long winter days are difficult for many to cope with at the best of times. I learned recently that she was given a lifetime ban. I feel very sad about this.

In the spirit of ? and goodwill to all, would you let her rejoin?

dragonfly46 sorry but I've read right through the thread and cant see anyone who says they've been in touch with her and who knows she wants to come back .Might be an idea to find out before the poor woman feels she has to come back because of this thread when she might prefer not to

Urmstongran is definitely in touch with EV

They have spoken on the phone this week, which is why Urms started this thread.

I am late to this thread, but wish to add my voice to the requests for EV to be reinstated.
Particularly as a poster who was offended by some of her remarks, also supports her reinstatement.

I certainly didn’t agree with some of EV’s comments, but I don’t think a lifetime ban is the right solution here.

Kamiso I hope you're on the mend now. that sounds rather frightening.

She didn’t do anything wrong, she just had a different opinion on some subjects and thank god she had the strength of spirit to voice them.

Hear, hear.

EV is very capable of standing her ground, a fact one poster realised and took the cowards way out by reporting EV!
Banned for a justifiable response is not a reason to treat someone like a naughty child.
I remember the thread well and nothing EV posted deserved a lifetime ban! I have noticed a lot worse from other posters who still have the freedom unjustly taken from EV.

I do hope you are reading this thread GNHQ and realise the difficulties this poster is having to cope with, made worse without the support of many friends on GN. Have a heart and redress your decision to take what was a lifeline to a longstanding poster.

I support the reinstatement of EllanVannin

I have always thought GN was a friendly supportive site and find the lifetime ban of an 81yr old lady totally without heart.

No support if your down and make comments about things you do not like or agree with? Give her a reinstatement she seems to have brought a ray of sunshine to a lot of lives. We should all be free to say what we feel or what is the point of the forum.confused

dragonfly46 Sat 04-Dec-21 11:47:40

Paddyann this post was started because the OP had been in touch with Ellan and yes she does read posts and yes she would like to come back.

JaneJudge Sat 04-Dec-21 11:46:16

I must be ever so busy as I don't even know who the absent prolific posters are grin

paddyann54 Sat 04-Dec-21 11:41:52

Another here who hasn't posted on the thread I assumed EV was having a break as many of us do .Has anyone been in touch with her to see if she wants to come back ? Some leave and never do return and thats their choice ,if it is a "lifetime ban" it seems unfair and if she wants to come back then in "the spirit of GN she should be allowed to .

Maria59 Sat 04-Dec-21 11:36:48

I would love to see EllanVannin back on the forum. Her wisdom is a benefit to many

It’s not as simple as that. Gransnet tech is such rubbish that even if you got a new email address their computers might/ might not pick up that’s it’s the same IP address.

Has anyone else noticed one or two prolific posters who have not supported this request? Just wondering who reported EV.

Not sure that absence proves guilt! I rang 111 on Monday and then found myself in an ambulance on the way to hospital, where I was hooked up to a drip for four days.

All this banning is nonsensical and insulting to all members. Feels like a kangaroo court. If a post is likely to offend, let it stand so we can decide for ourselves. It’s easy enough to skip past anyone you find repetitive or irritating.

I am part way through a two week ban on Quora! No idea which of my posts caused offense so haven’t learned anything apart from the fact that some people get trigger happy if given a little bit of power.

I found the ban when I eventually made it to the hospital ward! At the time it made me laugh. I got irritated when seeing people calling others stupid f*****g wankers if they didn’t vote/think like the poster, still free to hurl foul mouthed abuse with no consequences.

When I had to write one hundred lines at school I knew that I shouldn’t have “jumped down the stairs”, “slid down the bannister” or “laughed with my friends”.

So easy to press report by mistake if your fingers stray. Surely the guilty party is entitled to know, at the very least, which post upset someone and who it was. Seems the administrators are judge, jury and executioner!

Perhaps it’s time to involve the media as GN don’t seem to be interested in responding?

I’ll say goodbye now as I’ll probably be joining EV on the naughty step or will be cast out into space to roam for evermore.

Bibbity Sat 04-Dec-21 11:22:28

If anyone is in contact with her why not just get her to open another account?

Antonia Sat 04-Dec-21 11:11:34

I too think that EllanVannin should be able to rejoin. Maybe her opinions were not considered politically correct (just an assumption, I really have no idea why she was banned), but she is old and used to post regularly, so evidently Gransnet was important to her.

Greendress Sat 04-Dec-21 11:10:25

Please add my name to the list of people wishing for EV to be reinstated.

glammanana Sat 04-Dec-21 11:07:30

I am friends with EV and saw her as I was driving down the Road on Wednesday she looked fine all wrapped up warm making her way back to her flat.
Tomorrow I shall be calling on her with a Card for Christmas and to see if she has seen the posts here I know she will be humbled at the thoughts shown by so many people.

Gossamerbeynon1945 Sat 04-Dec-21 10:55:19

Please add my name too.

GrandmasueUK Sat 04-Dec-21 10:22:17

I used to look forward to reading EV's posts in the morning thread. I miss the crumpets and tales of her family, especially her great granddaughter. I would hope that this season is one of forgiveness and that Gransnet will allow her back again.

Septimia Sat 04-Dec-21 10:20:11

You can add me to the list of people who want EV reinstated.

There are often posts with which I disagree - and posters who I know I'll disagree with - but I'm quite capable of ignoring them! Deleting posts is fair enough (although I always want to know what they said!) but a lifetime ban is depriving adults of freedom of speech. It's like this silly idea of trigger warnings or not letting controversial subjects be discussed in universities.

Here is a radical suggestion.

How about the users of GN compose their own rules? Perhaps then it would prevent the obscure decisions by the moderators.

As I said above, an offensive post can be deleted.

I've seen some threads which have had more holes than a colander.

dragonfly46 Sat 04-Dec-21 10:13:22

Yes I know of at least one case Josianne where a poster constantly reported people and got them banned. I think eventually she/he was banned themselves.

Calistemon Sat 04-Dec-21 10:12:47

If a post is offensive or against guidelines it can be deleted.

No need for a lifetime ban on an elderly person who lives alone, especially during these trying times.

grannysyb Sat 04-Dec-21 10:08:15

Yes, let her come back. As someone said we are not children to be protected. I can't believe that she did anything wrong.
