This lady of 81y lives alone and GN was a great source of company for her. These long winter days are difficult for many to cope with at the best of times. I learned recently that she was given a lifetime ban. I feel very sad about this.

In the spirit of ? and goodwill to all, would you let her rejoin?

Kandinsky Sat 04-Dec-21 10:06:07

I don’t think I ever spoke to the poster concerned or know anything about her ‘posting style’ - but she’s clearly very well liked & missed, and the fact that she’s an elderly lady living alone I hope HQ let her back, even if it’s on some sort of ‘probationary’ period.

I am not a regular poster but do find this quite Draconian.

Galaxy Sat 04-Dec-21 09:55:20

Are you mad? grin

Whitewavemark2 Sat 04-Dec-21 09:46:02

Here is a radical suggestion.

How about the users of GN compose their own rules? Perhaps then it would prevent the obscure decisions by the moderators.

25Avalon Sat 04-Dec-21 09:43:05

Couldn’t people rejoin with a probationary period? I’ve looked at some of EV’s posts and couldn’t see any reason why she was banned. Obviously GN have their reasons which we are not aware of. GN please reconsider and grant her parole.

There are many people on GN I have disagreed with some of whom have personally attacked me I wouldn't want to see any of them banned. What on earth has someone done to receive such a sentence? At the very least GNHQ should be open and honest about what has gone on. Mind there are 7 pages here and no response so don't hold your breath!

Whitewavemark2 Sat 04-Dec-21 09:29:12

I never knew that poster that is being talked about, as I tend to keep to the N&P threads with the occasional foray into other threads. I think as a consequence I never really get to “know” many posters. Tbh I don’t have the time, but it seems that this poster was liked.

However, I do think that the adjudication on GN is very often questionable, but it is not a job I would like, and would find it tedious in the extreme.

Let us hope that the person in question gets to post again, after all who does it harm?

I don't know how they can impose a lifetime ban. Just create a new user and make sure that gransnet can not recognise that it is the same computer.

Unfortunately, people who do that are usually spotted and outed, eventually.
Even creating a new email address hasn't worked for some.

Anniebach Sat 04-Dec-21 09:01:18

May I too ask this ban is lifted, surely at this time when so many are isolated banning someone is cruel.

If posts are considered ‘not in the spirit’ delete the posts but please don’t push anyone into further isolation.

nanaK54 Sat 04-Dec-21 08:44:41

I am completely in the dark with regard to the reason for the lifetime ban imposed, I read far more than I post but would like to add my name to the list asking for the reinstatement of EV

Josianne Sat 04-Dec-21 08:44:11

Hopefully those who were so quick to press the report button are long gone.
Do you mean they are removed or just skulk off leaving devastation like this dragonfly46? The latter is a sad thought that hadn't occurred to me. How cruel.

Marydoll Sat 04-Dec-21 08:42:01

Crossed posts Maw!

Im late to the party, being unable to post in the last few days
.
When another, recently bereaved, poster was given a lifetime ban, I sent emails to GNHQ, stating that they had a duty of care, especially in the middle of a pandemic, to vulnerable, elderly posters, living on their own. I quoted their stock phrase, in the spirit of Gransnet, saying their action certainly wasn't and there was nasty manipulation going on by a few posters.

The repeated response I received was that they appreciated my concerns, what a good friend I was, blah, blah, blah, but reinstatement would set a precedent and it wouldn't happen.
To say I was raging, is an understatement.

I too miss EV, admiring her as a strong , loving grandparent and great grandparent, whose main goal in life was to support her family. We used to chat by PM and the characteristic I admired most, was that she was genuine and honest. Although I didn't always agree with her, I enjoyed her posts.
It's very hard to trust anonymous people on a site like this, it takes a long time to get to know them and to be able to trust, but she was a poster I felt was genuine.

As for reporting, resulting in a ban, I sometimes think GNHQ can be a little naive and they do not see that the real reason behind the reports is a deliberate desire to put the poster in a bad light. If a poster takes a dislike to you, you are powerless to change that, however the best way, IMO, is not to engage with them.

I always report spam, because I detest those who prey on the vulnerable, but I rarely report anything else. It needs to be pretty serious for me to do that. I prefer posters to see what has been said,

I really do hope that GN will reconsider. Even if they do so , it probably won't be easy, with a number of conditions imposed. However, if she wants back, EV will have to grin and bear it.

Just seen this Urms well done for starting it.
I too wish to see Ellan back, she has been a good friend to me.
Hopefully those who were so quick to press the report button are long gone.

Please be generous HQ at this time of year. There is not one person on this post who does not wish to see Ellan back.

I can’t remember reading any of E’s posts but banning someone for life sounds rather over the top.

Oopsadaisy1 Sat 04-Dec-21 08:19:32

I’ve reported my own post, hopefully that will encourage them to speed things up.

cornergran Sat 04-Dec-21 08:09:24

A step forward farnorth, thank you sharing it with us. Lifetime bans are draconian, hopefully ellen will be back soon if she chooses to return.

Urmstongran Sat 04-Dec-21 07:46:37

FarNorth

NanKate

There is an eerie silence from GN HQ ?

I've had an email, in response to reporting my own post.
They say they're thinking about it and will get back to us.

Ooh - that sounds ‘hopeful’ FarNorth⁉️ Fingers (and toes) crossed today. Thank you for the update, really appreciated.

I too support EV being reinstated please GNHQ

Juliet27 Sat 04-Dec-21 06:57:24

EV and I have discussed our families living in the same town in Australia. It’s bad enough having family the other side of the world that you’ve been unable to see for years without being banned from sharing thoughts with fellow sufferers.

NotAGran55 Sat 04-Dec-21 06:53:39

Totally agree although I don’t ‘know’ EV I’m all for second chances.
This is the Season of Goodwill after all.
