To separate News from Politics

Urmstongran today made a suggestion to GNHQ that the above two subjects should have their own threads. Apparently we have to register our approval or interest here.
So yes, please please, please.

There is very little on the news which does not have a political dimension and so I don't think it is possible to separate them.

Calistemon Thu 09-Dec-21 19:15:47

As usual with everything on GN and the country as a whole, we are divided ?

Urmstongran Thu 09-Dec-21 19:13:19

Gwyneth ???

Gwyneth Thu 09-Dec-21 19:11:42

It probably wouldn’t make any difference separating the two as some posters on here manage to politicise just about anything. In fact they seem to make it their goal in life. Quite sad really.

Galaxy Thu 09-Dec-21 19:07:12

I say let's not give it a trial run grin

ayse Thu 09-Dec-21 19:05:21

Like others I look at the active threads. I can’t see the point in separating news and politics either.

Chat about non-political news stories can go on Chat. If it’s popular it’ll stay in the active category.

Parsley3 Thu 09-Dec-21 19:02:37

I do the same as you Doodledog. I usually look at the thread title but not the forum. A separate forum for the Royal Family would be good, though.

BlueBelle Thu 09-Dec-21 18:58:57

barmeyoldbat of course not, but news can just be newsy for instance I m not interested myself but say a celebrity swims the channel, or a woman gets stung by 200 bees, or we have a heatwave why do things like that, more lighthearted news, have to piled in with the heavy political stuff

Urmstongran Thu 09-Dec-21 18:56:39

True Cali. They will either split it or not.

Calistemon Thu 09-Dec-21 18:55:23

I expect GNHQ will decide.

Ilovecheese Thu 09-Dec-21 18:53:32

No, Doodledog I just look at active topics as well.

Barmeyoldbat Thu 09-Dec-21 18:48:04

Does that mean when the thread came up about the refugees who drowned we shouldn’t include any mention of this useless government. There is a crossover in most of the news and we shouldn’t restrict discussion and debate.

Doodledog Thu 09-Dec-21 18:41:31

Am I the only one who uses 'Active Topics', rather than dipping from one forum to another? I just scan the screen and see which thread titles appeal - I don't check which forum they are in, which is why I think that measuring 'footfall' wouldn't prove much.

Urmstongran Thu 09-Dec-21 18:34:02

But lots do Galaxy in my opinion.

I say - Let’s give it a trial run. ‘Footfall’ on the threads will persuade GNHQ either way, whether or not the change is popular. Then in 3 months they will either scrap the format or keep it if it’s popular.

BlueBelle Thu 09-Dec-21 18:30:45

MaizieD indeed I could post all the things I mentioned in Chat thread SO why not just have ‘POLITICS’ then I can avoid if I want
I d rather ‘News and Chat’ than ‘News and Politics’

25Avalon Thu 09-Dec-21 18:30:16

I posted about the new Johnson baby girl under news because I thought that was what it was rather than chat. It was breaking news. It was not, however politics so a separate thread for News alone would have been the most appropriate.

Galaxy Thu 09-Dec-21 18:26:30

Because lots of people dont want it?

Urmstongran Thu 09-Dec-21 18:20:14

I would like what is in the news tonight - Sienna Miller and her court case over phone hacking (just an example) under News. Which it is.

Politics threads can get very febrile. They put a lot of people off (apart from some aficionados - me included if I’m feeling brave!) but a lot of posters avoid the N&P like the plague.

Anyway why not give it a trial of say 3 months, then review? It can’t hurt!

Galaxy Thu 09-Dec-21 18:17:37

Trying to control what people say on the internet is very difficult unless you actually own an internet site. I thought we were all old enough to manage our own speech and didn't want GN interfering or has that changed.

Chestnut Thu 09-Dec-21 17:44:53

I'm not so bothered about splitting news and politics as about getting Games removed to having their own tab at the top. They have nothing to do with a discussion forum and are really annoying.

Calistemon Thu 09-Dec-21 17:38:35

My story above was News.

MaizieD Thu 09-Dec-21 17:37:16

If I want to talk about a dog biting a child, a car crash or a tree growing to an unusually massive height I DONT. wants to be told it’s political WHATEVER BLOOMING SHADE

Why can't you post things like that in 'Chat'? Because that's really what they are.

Calistemon Thu 09-Dec-21 17:36:30

News or Politics?
It involves the NHS and a weapon of war.

Something is only political if you make it so.

It seems that most people who want to separate the two are those who don’t like to read criticisms of this government, as it’s becoming increasingly difficult to defend them.

My point, this whole discussion now becomes nitty picky political and it wasn't intended that way.

TBH, 'nit picky political' can happen on any forum.

I don't understand the 'minefield' comment earlier on. An alternative 'News' forum wouldn't prevent that, see my first sentence... There will never be a thread, on any of the forums, where political opinions won't be challenged ('challenge usually being at the root of 'minefield' comments).
