Really riled about this. A poster started a thread earlier today about bossy pisters trying to control threads. A lot of other posters agreed and said they too had often been made to feel uncomfortable, belittled or jeered at by a minority of posters.

A couple of posters then came on accusing the OP of stirring it and saying people should Name names. Other pisters quite rightly pointed out that this was inappropriate and against rules. The thread was then abruptly zapped as 'not being in the spirit...'

Concerned, I started a thread wondering about the zapping and requesting an explanation. Again a majority of posters agreedand also asjed for an explanation. Again, a couple of posters came on saying they didn't like the original thread, and also objected to my thread.

Once again HQ zapped the thread with no proper explanation. What is going on here!

grin my dog is a weirdo as well

Josieann Sat 19-Feb-22 18:17:16

My dog is beautiful, but a bit stroppy today due to the weather. His name is the same as Harry's and he is ginger. I've just tried him with a (gentle, not cruel) collar that stops him barking. Perhaps I could lend it out, the collar I mean.

Casdon Sat 19-Feb-22 18:07:57

The dog hates the rain, he won’t go out for a walk unless you actually drag him when it’s raining, he just keeps going rigid or sitting down. He won’t walk on the grass in the garden either, he’s a wuss. He’s been in a lot for two days because of the weather, but he’s got lots of pent up energy, which he is dispersing by wanting to constantly be in my face. However much you play with him is not enough! He was also up at 6.00 this morning barking for attention, which is very unusual. He is however very beautiful.

Yet again GN believe they know what is right for us I do get tired of being treated like someone who has age but no brain

Galaxy Sat 19-Feb-22 18:02:43

Oh that's made me laugh a bit trisher. The endless troll family threads dont seem that beautiful or useful to me.

Callistemon21 Sat 19-Feb-22 18:02:24

I'm much more prosaic:
Do I love it, do I want it, do I need it?

Then put it back in the cupboard while I have a think about it.

JaneJudge Sat 19-Feb-22 17:56:07

Callistemon21

I don't understand the William Morris reference

which one? grin

trisher was referring to a William Morris quote: have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful

but he also said: Love is enough: though the World be a-waning, and the woods have no voice but the voice of complaining.

Casdon, is your dog worried by the weather?

trisher Sat 19-Feb-22 17:55:56

Callistemon21

I don't understand the William Morris reference

The reason given for the deletion of the thead was that it conributed noting useful or beautiful to GN which is William Morris 'Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be beautiful or believe to be useful' - William Morris.
Never noticed this on other posts grin

Callistemon21 Sat 19-Feb-22 17:49:22

What's the dog done Casdon?

He probably wants a long walkies and not a short sniffies but he hasn't been paying attention to the weather forecast!
?

Casdon Sat 19-Feb-22 17:46:44

That’s probably why he wanted everything in his life to be useful or beautiful JaneJudge, so he could stay calm. It’s just a good job my dog’s beautiful as he is sorely trying my patience today.

JaneJudge Sat 19-Feb-22 17:31:53

William Morris had a temper so wild it provoked seizures

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 19-Feb-22 17:17:27

trisher, nobody was judgmental about the purpose of your thread because you openly admitted that it was to goad people - which is indeed neither useful nor beautiful.

trisher Sat 19-Feb-22 17:06:12

It's sad that people think they have the right to be judgemental about others' threads. It shows just how deep their belief in free speech goes. Interestingly GNHQ now seem to have become followers of William Morris so presumably anything which isn't useful or beautiful will be taken down. Who knew?

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 19-Feb-22 17:00:53

Well today’s goady thread was taken down, good job too.

rafichagran Sat 19-Feb-22 15:39:32

I also dislike it when posters come on to say not interested or who cares without further explanation. Why bother to comment, you add nothing to the discussion.
Also posters who write goady threads to get people wound up, to suit their own agenda, it's very sad really.

Yes, language is a very interesting one on social media/GN Bewsitched. I tend to use lots of superlatives to paint a word picture, but have then been accused of boasting and showing off. Some posters prefer to the point one liners, but they can come across as abrupt and abrasive too. Very tricky.

It is tricky, and I am sure that if we typed in conversations as we had them with friends they may well sound judgemental or abrupt, and as for the constant interrupting and shooting off at a tangent....well! However, we all have a responsibility to do our best not to offend as we air our differing opinions, a very useful thread.

Thanks Ro60.

I agree that social signals are important and also when you know somebody 'in the round' so to speak you can see their comments and views in some sort of perspective and context. I am quite sure that I would find some of my friends opinionated or sarcastic on here, but because I also see how kind and thoughtful they are in many other ways I just laugh it off as them 'obviously being behind the door when tact was being handed out'.

I think small cultural differences can also lead to misunderstandings. I remember being accused of trying to sound posh on Mumsnet once because I said 'myself and my sister...'
But that's how we say it here in Dublin.
I was also accused on Gransnet of being derogatory about a particular career because I said you had to have a third level degree nowadays to enter it. Third level in Ireland means a university degree, but some posters thought I meant a third rate degree and took offence.

Ro60 Thu 17-Feb-22 23:46:42

Rafichagran 15.03 my sentiments too ?
Sometimes is just nice to connect ... Thanks for your responses folks ????
Many thanks to beswitched for coming up with the thread

Marmite32 Thu 17-Feb-22 17:21:35

I agree Raficha.I haven't taken part because I'm feeling very dull-brained at the moment. Head full of cottonwool.

rafichagran Thu 17-Feb-22 15:03:53

This has been a good informative thread. I am enjoying reading the posts and I like the humour on it. Glad it was not deleted.

Josieann Thu 17-Feb-22 14:46:21

I think it's good that several examples have been given as to what rattles posters. The N & P forum is always a tricky one because some posters might want to discuss happenings in the news in a more light hearted manner, but are then accused of trivialising Politics threads. It isn't nice for posters to be told to clear off back to cake baking or flower arranging threads, implying their views are less intelligent or less worthy of discussion.
As Ro60 says, in real life such things can be said with a grin, but written down it looks far more aggressive.

Chrissyoh Thu 17-Feb-22 14:23:17

Ro60

It does show how much we rely on other social signals in a conversation - those that we can't see on a forum - like eye contact, a smile, body language and also knowing the person.

So true Ro60 .

GillT57 Thu 17-Feb-22 12:41:27

That's true Ro60.
