and I mean years ago, Gransnet was newer, brighter, more tolerant, less dictatorial, more interesting, and mixed in with the serious conversations there were generally some lighthearted, funnier threads.... reading today it seems to have lost something?

Titter ye not!

Why on earth would anyone a) find fault with it b) need to be told it is light hearted? Really.

Just fish it out, and enjoy it- job done.

That wasn't 'kind' Fleurpepper, and really proves my point.

That's good

Some people do enjoy being unkind though

I don't stand for that

Galaxy Wed 31-Aug-22 23:01:59

I think theres some real examples of kindness on some threads today. It's quite moving to be honest.

Doodledog Wed 31-Aug-22 22:49:10

I don't think many people enjoy being unkind. The vast majority of people I've met would rather do a good deed as a bad one.

VioletSky Wed 31-Aug-22 22:47:04

Truth is truth

The issue is people who enjoy being unkind

Doodledog Wed 31-Aug-22 22:43:49

Truth is not always kind, though. And it is not always kind to tell the truth.

VioletSky Wed 31-Aug-22 22:20:01

I know lots of people are angry or sad or passionate about some topics or issues that have affected them... and disagreeing is fine even if its coloured by emotional experience

But the personal comments should definitely be challenged.

They have no place in any discussion

Truth always wins in the end, if people enjoy being unkind, eventually they will find very little space to do so

Extra meat ration, as DH says!

The point about the fly was that it was still alive next morning. Hiccuping slightly.

Have you not noticed Fleurpepper that people have taken to noting that their posts are lighthearted.

Wheniwasyourage

That's upsetting to hear, Vintagejazz. More flowers for you.

Perhaps we all need to take a big breath before launching off about something. We do not know what is going on in other posters' lives, and while it's easy to put one's foot in it unintentionally, I can't see what anyone gains by going to the lengths of using pms to continue the attack.

Surely a bit of idle chat is what everyone needs from time to time, and if you're not in the mood for it, don't take part, for goodness sake! This all reminds me of the threads in Pedants' Corner (the clue is in the title) when someone accuses us of splitting hairs. That's what pedants do, and why we have a corner for doing it, and anyone is welcome to join in for a bit of splitting, but asking us why we are wasting time doing it is a bit pointless!

Thank you ?

Doesn't he look grand in it, too? smile

One of the saddest things to happen to GN recently is that people need to say when a thread is lighthearted.

I think that is an indicator of the nastier nature of the group.

I was going to start a lighthearted thread about a fly in my wine but couldn't be bothered because I knew somebody would find fault with it.

Oh no, kittylester!

I just had a little fly land on my arm, my chest, my hand. It had better not land in my wine!
Cheers ?

I’m not sure it’s changed a lot, the first couple of comments I made were shot down, one about dogs in restaurants as I recall, I was not upset, but quite surprised at the strength of feeling against me, so I don’t like dogs in restaurants, I’m not calling for all dogs to be euthanised.

Since then I just look in and out, like others I keep out of politics, to be honest I’m not knowledgeable enough to keep up, there are some very clever ladies here for sure.

I probably agreed with you having been to a café at a farm shop and seeing a man with his dog on his knee, feeding the dog with his leftovers ?

I've had dogs, I like most dogs ?

LauraNorderr Wed 31-Aug-22 19:46:03

I do agree with DanniRae and not only that but I always perk up when I see her name.
Hope you got over the fly in your wine Kitty, I agree, soooo annoying.
I’ve been a member for five years, don’t feel much has changed in that time. Am I an established poster or still a newbie? Who knows. Don’t see that it should matter at all.

Urmstongran Wed 31-Aug-22 19:21:03

icanhandthemback Wed 31-Aug-22 19:15:48

I also agree with Dannirae ?

I have been a member of GN for about ten years and looking back I remember the first half of 2016 as being, especially on News and Politics, full of appalling vicious nasty posts. There were numerous personal attacks on anyone who did not intend to vote leave in the EU referendum. In spite of many being reported the attacks often continued under different names.

I suspect that a number of these posters, who have not since been heard of, were actually trolls or bots.

Sara1954 Wed 31-Aug-22 18:49:03

If we were all in a room together, I wonder how many ladies we could accurately identify
