and I mean years ago, Gransnet was newer, brighter, more tolerant, less dictatorial, more interesting, and mixed in with the serious conversations there were generally some lighthearted, funnier threads.... reading today it seems to have lost something?

FWIW, I prefer that being an expectation to reading the same thing over and over, even when the OP has explained that it won't work or doesn't apply, but maybe that's for a different thread?

That's why having the OP's posts in a different colour is a good idea but so far, no luck.

MissAdventure

Do you remember a fair while back, that someone posted as a joke that her grandson was selfish (at age two or three) and she was looking for advice on how to punish him? grin

Speak roughly to your little boy
and beat him when he sneezes!
he only does it to annoy,
because he knows it teases!

I’ve been posting for about a couple of years now and generally have found people to be helpful and interesting and have enjoyed lots of the threads. I have, however, had posters berating me for my opinion and telling me how i ought to think and feel which is upsetting. I also think there are definitely some bossy Queen bees that feel they have to act as Moderators or just tell me how clever they are. I am, as a result, far more wary on a thread when I see these posters. On balance I think Gransnet provides something for most people, whether that be comfort, support, advice, games, stimulation, chat or just fun. smile

That would be a brilliant idea. After 100's of posts it is difficult to scroll back to find out what the OP said on various occasions because even though I usually read all the posts before I comment, I've often forgotten what was said by that time...I am old, you know. ?

On my iPhone and iPad the OP’s posts show in green, along with any of mine in pink. Every other post is white apart from GNHQ which show as blue.

Those who keep telling us how well qualified and clever they are probably aren’t but have a low self esteem I think. To be avoided. Different from those who really do have knowledge but don’t need to shout it from the rooftops every other day.

I agree with this 100%

Wheniwasyourage Fri 02-Sept-22 17:27:39

There are some who really are qualified to tell us about some topics. I'm thinking particularly of a lawyer whose advice has been much appreciated. She manages to give the advice without coming over as someone who thinks she is clever (although I'm sure she is), and so her advice has in fact been asked for, not just given spontaneously.

We have over the years had contributions from several people who do actually know what they are talking about, and they too have been appreciated. I know what you mean about those "who keep telling us how well qualified and clever they are", though nanna8!

Enid101 Fri 02-Sept-22 17:32:38

Yes you are right Wheniwasyourage, some posters are invaluable and provide excellent advice.

Barmeyoldbat Fri 02-Sept-22 18:56:10

Wheniwasyounger, I know who you referring about legal advice and whilst I have had much respect for some of advice I do at times find her wholly bossy and a know all. This came after I was told by her that what I had done was fraudulent, despite a legal team setting it up and being in my opinion offences about my granddaughters choice of work. I took a great deal flack from her and others who followed. Though I was grateful that a few stood up for me. It did make me want to leave but I am still here

Sara1954 Fri 02-Sept-22 19:01:26

Maybe some people miss the fact that they are no longer in charge, that they no longer have clients hanging on their every word.
This maybe the next best thing, dazzling us all with their knowledge and intellect.

Milly47 Fri 02-Sept-22 19:10:47

Yes, I find some people give very helpful advice in a kind and low key way, and some folks like to shout about it, and sometimes even humiliate the questioner.
There are some posters who feel that their choice of clothes is what we should all be wearing too, as they endlessly promote the same (expensive) fashion brands every time.

Galaxy Fri 02-Sept-22 19:32:51

I think there is a poster with a comprehensive knowledge of child safeguarding, I find her posts really helpful.

Galaxy Fri 02-Sept-22 19:33:32

That's my field of work as well but I always appreciate her input.

With respect, the action which you talked about, and which I said would fraudulent, later transpired not to be the action which you had taken, which was perfectly in order. Had you accurately described what you had done there would have been no misunderstanding or ‘flack’. I don’t wish to argue, merely to set the record straight.
I trust that wasn’t aimed at me Sara. If it was you’re way off the mark.
These are the sort of comments that spoil GN.

Doodledog Fri 02-Sept-22 22:28:33

I was on that thread, and GSM is right. There was some confusion on that thread, as (to my untrained eye at least) the problem with the topic under discussion is that too much relies on an interpretation of motive, so that two people could do the same thing with the same result, but if the motives are different the legal situation would be different. I think that is very unfair, which is basically what we were talking about, but GSM did withdraw her comments about fraud when she realised the reality of your situation, Barmeyoldbat.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 02-Sept-22 22:32:35

Thanks Doodledog. I’m grateful for your clarification.

Doodledog Fri 02-Sept-22 22:42:33

No problem. There are so many accusations flying about just now, and it's making GN rather unpleasant. If people are going to say things about others they at least need to be accurate.

VioletSky Fri 02-Sept-22 23:49:37

Blimey

VioletSky Fri 02-Sept-22 23:51:07

If people applied their own comments to themselves, gransnet would be unicorns and rainbows.

Truly baffling

It’s true-and those PA posts where a poster pretends to be sweetness and light are equally disturbing.

Very sorry if I have caused any offence, most certainly not aimed at you.
Just commenting that sometimes some people do seem to like the sound of their own voices a little too much.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 03-Sept-22 08:42:40

Thank you Sara, I appreciate you saying that.

Barmeyoldbat Sat 03-Sept-22 08:50:17

Yes blimey Violetsky, that was my thought, a poster asked a question and I answered it. I have looked at the posts again and I explained right at the beginning what steps we had undertaken, so I fail to understand what other information I gave that changed your mind GSM and nowhere did you say it wasn’t fraud.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 03-Sept-22 08:59:30

I’m not going to get into an argument with you Barmey and I’m not going to spend time re-reading the thread. My recollection is very clear, as is Doodledog’s, but as HM said, recollections may vary.
