Hello
The topic of the search function has come up again in another thread.

I’m just intrigued (and a bit sad and boring) as to why it works for some and not for others.
Does it or doesn’t it work for you?
And what are you using?

It’s never worked for me.
Mobile site, Safari.

I use desktop site too on my phone.

Doesn't work on my Kindle fire either

toscalily Tue 11-Oct-22 14:05:51

I get the same as nadateturbe using the desktop site on a laptop.

Mollygo Tue 11-Oct-22 13:46:28

This is what I get, or if I use the search button in the menu at the bottom, I get “no results” On the other hand, if I Google ‘dogs on Gransnet’ I get . . .

The best feature that gransnet doesn't have is (for want of knowing what to call it) the @ feature. If you wish to address a comment to a fellow member you simply prefix their name with @ e.g. @esspee.
So if I had mentioned on the gardening thread that I made my own comfrey fertiliser then some time later you saw the post and wanted the recipe you just post your query and add the @ before my name. I would get an email alerting me to the post and could reply.
Very often members post a comment then never return to the thread as they weren't envisaging any followup.

I got the same results as nadateturbe when I put in FannyCornforth 2022. I also always gets two or three ads before the Gransnet - for Amazon, etc. No photos, just words.

nadateturbe Tue 11-Oct-22 13:06:03

Dogs

nadateturbe Tue 11-Oct-22 13:03:59

I put in FannyCornforth 2022
Sorry it's a bit blurred for some reason.

I can type anything re GN into Google and get more info than I ever needed. Just not on GN.

Casdon Tue 11-Oct-22 11:36:39

I don’t understand it, I type in any word, eg I typed Fanny yesterday as you can see from my pic above, I hit the return button on my phone or iPad and it comes up straight away. If you are also hitting return and it isn’t coming up on yours I think it must be something to do with the way the settings are configured on your phones?

Mollygo Tue 11-Oct-22 11:24:46

Doesn’t work for me (iPhone) I just get the no results answer, whether I put in a title which I know exists, or a date when I know I posted or a poster’s name.
I don’t use GN on my laptop as it’s linked to my job.

Here are some screenshots from just now

FannyCornforth Tue 11-Oct-22 10:55:36

Thanks Annie
As a test yesterday, I put in usernames and dates from a few years ago to today.
I also searched for ‘dogs’.

Hi everyone - it would be good to know what search terms people are using when they're not getting results. We'll look into it.

Thanks all for suggestions on the features you'd like to see - we're giving all of this consideration.

Nannytopsy Mon 10-Oct-22 10:36:14

Doesn’t work on my iPhone either.

Casdon Mon 10-Oct-22 10:09:06

I took a photo of my phone screen with my iPad to show you.

FannyCornforth Mon 10-Oct-22 09:59:00

This is what I get every time

nadateturbe Mon 10-Oct-22 09:55:32

It works on my Galaxy A52 and works well.

FannyCornforth Mon 10-Oct-22 09:54:04

Oh Casdon! You’ve blown my theory right out of the water!

Casdon Mon 10-Oct-22 09:50:12

The search facility on Gransnet works on my iPhone, even when I’m not signed in, I just checked it to make sure, and on my iPad. It’s a mystery.

We’ve always known that MN is the rich relation ?

When they have their fancy new functions, which they seem to every other week, I always think; can GN have the old cast off ones, please? ?
If we had a voting function, there wouldn’t be a single decision I’d make without consulting here first ?

Pittcity Mon 10-Oct-22 09:19:25

I don't bother using it.
To find something on GN I use Google and type in "Something Gransnet"

Thanks all! It looks like it could be a phone thing then. It’s an iPhone, previously an android, and it didn’t work then either.
However, the MN search function works/ed on both.

MerylStreep Mon 10-Oct-22 09:02:22

As you know, Fanny, it works for me ?
Can posters tell us what they get when they do a search.
