Old threads

There’s been an irritating resurgence of old threads, often revived by spammers and the whole saga starts over again often 5 or more years down the road.
Please, please check the date of an Original Post, or skim down if it looks to be an old one to see if it has genuinely been revived to good purpose.
It can be frustrating for OP if the circumstances under which they started a thread have changed, distressing even if illness or death has featured and it’s such a waste of your breath to offer advice when a problem must have either got better or worse or just gone away long ago.
So check the date at the top and perhaps think twice ?

I have been guilty of writing on a thread, which after posting realized the original date was a year or even years old. 😞
I asked for my post to be taken down.

Even more frustrating when its been pointed out and still they keep coming 🤷‍♀️

The names often give it away also, replies by posters no longer posting.

I don’t know how they find these threads if I search fir one for genuine reasons I just get a cow that tells me it’s mooooved and back I have to go to the current threads
Anyone tell me how or is it only me ?

Sago Fri 07-Feb-25 18:28:28

Sometimes the threads are interesting though plus I’m sure many of us cannot remember a thread from 2017 so it’s all new!

Do you remember any old posters names out of interest?

Good advice Maw. I often trundle down the posts and don’t realise until I see a blast from the past. Aw! One or two poignant ones sometimes. 😢

To be honest, though, it’s not always easy to remember to check the date of the OP when you click on it. I’ve looked at posts, attracted by the topic, and only realised so far in that it’s an old thread (usually when someone else has spotted that it is and said so). I rarely look to see if the post that has attracted my interest is from today, last week, last month or last year, or even longer - probably should, but not always that observant. Once I realise, I do not to post on it, unless it has been genuinely revived and I have something to add to it.

I remember Frank and his little dog, from years ago!

Germanshepherdsmum, Callistemon, Gagajo, FannyCornforth, Quizqueen are a few who come to mind.

Sad that some no longer post, and are missed.

Oh Rosie you are preaching to the converted here - it really is a bugbear with GN. However, an irritation is those who don’t read the thread - a recent one was asking for birthday present suggestions for a grandson. After many ideas, the OP posted her decision, but additional posts came in, thick and fast afterwards.
It was another post, perhaps last year that annoyed me. A poster asking advice about her Mother, later posted on the same thread, that her Mum had died, but again further posts flooded in, one even wishing her good luck with her Mum’s situation!

I agree Sago that a thread may still be of interest, but if it’s from 2017, why not just start a new thread, using the same title.

I’ve long wondered if GNHQ could perhaps remove (and archive?) threads that are several years old and out of date?

Add to the list.... Lucca and Phoenix.

The above is to Calendargirl. smile

I believe those posters aren’t interested in what other people have to say. It’s just their posts they want to see.

Don’t forget that for all sorts of reasons members change their username.

I have to admit that I have replied a a couple of times without looking at the date.

But honestly- some subjects are universal, and dates or individual cases irrelevant- and still very interesting and worth discussing, so why not?

I still miss EllanVannin our crumpet queen from Liverpool.

Perhaps they do a search and find a thread which may be a subject of interest to them.

I've been caught but try to be more careful now.

Sadly, not Lucca and Phoenix, both sadly missed. ☹

Some threads are more time-sensitive than others.

A personal dilemma or problem for example, should be probably not be resurrected after time has passed because presumably the problem has been solved or the situation has changed.

Threads on everyday matters that aren't time sensitive are less of a problem and help avoid duplicate posts.

Doodledog Fri 07-Feb-25 21:44:59

I always find it amusing when several posters point out that it is an old thread and bump it up the page, despite the fact that numerous others have already done so. If anyone was bothering to read the thread they would know it was old even if they hadn't twigged before it was pointed out.

Galaxy Fri 07-Feb-25 21:46:06

I miss Lucca, she was such a 'fair' poster.

I agree with Sago -sometimes the threads are interesting.
