Using Gransnet - crossings out

(134 Posts)

Can anyone tell me why some people’s posts are partly crossed through? There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to it and it is puzzling me. Does Gransnet do it? I can’t see it being the poster as, surely, they could just delete the bit that shouldn’t be there.
I’d love to know!

Well, I opened a fine old can of worms there, didn’t I? 😂

I don’t like them, either say what you are going to say or don’t say it.

maddyone Sun 09-Feb-25 14:29:37

it works

Well it does on my iPad.
I click on the word which is crossed out in the Styling list, represented by I in a circle, and then just write whatever I’m saying, with a tongue in cheek comment, and it works.

I haven’t explained that very well. I must be a bit dim.

Oh dear

I seem to manage fine Are you using the correct dashes?

Works for me, thank you.

Only trouble by the time I need to use it I will have forgotten how to!

The tricky bit is getting in front of the hyphen after the word in order to insert another hyphen. I don’t have a cursor, just a clumsy finger.

By Jove I’ve got it I think I’ve got it! Thanks FGT

I just kept practicing and ‘previewing message’ until I cracked it. I’m getting rather good at it now

Step-by-step step for us iPad users:

Start with a hyphen -
Then (and this is tricky) go in front of the hyphen you’ve just put and add another one
Jump back with the cursor to the front of the first hyphen (no space) and add your word or phrase
Then directly abut it with another hyphen
Lastly do what you did before, go in front of that hyphen and add another one.

practice makes perfect

No space before the t
Nope, didn’t work.

BlueBelle Sun 09-Feb-25 12:47:23

Or this —hi—

Delila Sun 09-Feb-25 12:46:39

Elaborate please FGT!

BlueBelle Sun 09-Feb-25 12:46:10

No doesn’t work —for me— ….. - - this- -

BlueBelle Sun 09-Feb-25 12:44:17

I don’t think I ve ever used it I can’t see the point at all and I don’t know why anyone would unless it’s in a sarcastic way having said that I don’t remember seeing it done but then I m not very observant
but let’s try it —on my iPad—

I still can’t quite see why you would need to do that though. If you don’t like what you have written, why not just delete it? I am getting confused!
Thank you anyway and I’m sorry if I’m being thick!
How do people find these gems of info out? I have been on here for ages and didn’t know that.

It's humour.
I've always got it, but perhaps that is because I share the same type of humour. grin

One person here often does it to be really unpleasant- saying they would't dream of correcting a spelling or typo, but then doing so by crossing out. Just very rude and 2 faced.

I have never seen that. In my case it is a tool to indicate self depreciation or humour.

Woohoo, that worked, I think! You learn something new every day, so they say. Thank you for the tip.

Delila Sun 09-Feb-25 12:15:23

Thanks for the various explanations but I can’t do it on iPad either. The instructions below look straightforward, but two consecutive hyphens form one long one, and don’t work as shown. Hyphens with spaces don’t work either, nor does backspacing. I’ve tried every variation. I probably won’t ever need to use it but it’s frustrating not knowing how.

Also useful in self-deprecating post.

escaped Sun 09-Feb-25 11:59:12

I thought it indicated the subtle difference between what one is quietly thinking and what one politely writes.
So, using your example, I might write that Corossstichfan is thick slow in understanding the strike through facility on GN!!
It works fine on my phone, too dashes before and two after the word, nothing else touching it.
