As the title says. On Mumsnet it’s easy to change user names.. can we have the same please? It helps protect anonymity.

I've always thought that would be a good facility to have.

dragonfly46 Sat 06-Sept-25 04:09:01

Can’t you just leave and rejoin with a new name?

BlueBelle Sat 06-Sept-25 06:02:14

You ll be pixxing in the wind to ask for anything different or new on GN

JamesandJon33 Sat 06-Sept-25 06:41:03

That is a very good idea .Hope someone ‘upstairs’ takes notice

Have personally found GB admin really responsive and helpful. It's a free site so feels a bit entitled to complain...?

Franski Sat 06-Sept-25 07:34:51

GN admin..... btw despite my thanks to them l, must say an edit button would be nice!!!

PamelaJ1 Sat 06-Sept-25 07:40:46

Do you want me to report one of these posts then it will be drawn to the attention of those ‘upstairs’?
Franski I have found them responsive too but you do know that they earn a penny or two from the adverts don’t you?

Hi everyone - thanks for the suggestion. On Mumsnet we allow name changes because it helps people protect their anonymity when sharing sensitive or personal experiences, but we still prevent posting from multiple usernames in the same thread so conversations stay honest.

Gransnet is a smaller, tighter-knit community, so we’ve historically not offered that feature because it can create confusion and increase the risk of misuse in a forum where members often recognise one another. We’ll discuss the possibility at GNHQ and we’ll report back - please do add any examples or reasons you think this would help so we can include them in the discussion.

PamelaJ1 Sat 06-Sept-25 15:37:08

I’m just adding to the conversation as gransnet have responded and are asking for input from us.
I have used my ‘other’ name occasionally but only for quite embarrassing (for me) subjects . I wish I had chosen a more generic name originally.

Abnuyc123 Sat 06-Sept-25 15:53:25

Of course changing your forum name would be optional. If you like your forum name and have friends on here that recognise you and want to chat, then I don’t suppose you’d want to change.

I’ve noticed a few posts recently voicing concerns over anonymity. The facility to change your user name could help protect your identity and perhaps allow you to post for advice on more sensitive issues

How do you have two names PamelaJ ?

Hi AnnieGransnet

Might it be possible when sending someone a p.m. to find out they’re not taking messages BEFORE we write one - sometimes a bit fulsome, to then press ‘send’ as find the intended recipient is declining p.m’s anyway?

Rosie51 Sat 06-Sept-25 16:37:45

On Gransnet sometimes intimate or very personal things are raised. The ability to do a namechange for that thread would be useful. On my occasional forays onto Mumsnet I notice posters often announce they've name changed for privacy etc. on that thread.

Shelflife Sat 06-Sept-25 18:05:31

It would be a useful option. There may be occasions when someone feels they have compromised their anonymity .
HQ please give this matter serious consideration .

Kandinsky Sat 06-Sept-25 18:15:36

It’s a difficult one.
But I’m inclined to agree with HQ that GN is a much smaller, tighter knit, forum than MN, and that’s its strength.
I’d be more inclined to believe ( & therefore reply ) to a poster whose. name I recognize. ‘New’ names really stick out on here and if a ‘new’ name suddenly posted about something very personal, rightly or wrongly, I’d probably not believe it.
If I wanted to name change for advice on something very personal, I’d do it on MN.
Plenty of grans over there too.

I don't really understand, people do name change on here, do they have to de register or something, is that the issue.

Doodledog Sat 06-Sept-25 18:44:21

I don't understand why the fact that GN is a smaller community makes any difference to the facilities we have. If anything, the fact that we 'know' each other better makes the need for an occasional name change more likely. Why would someone confide a personal matter when it would be remembered for years?

Similarly, an edit button is no more likely to cause issues here than elsewhere - many of us post on MN too, and this who don't are not a separate species. If we can handle it over there, why is it assumed we can't on here? It's quite insulting to have two sister sites and deny members of one the things that the other gets as a matter of course - as has been said, nobody would have to use anything they didn't want to, so why can't we be offered the same facilities as on MN? We have often asked for OP posts to be highlighted for instance, or for a better search facility, but we are always ignored.

If everyone starts name changing I ll be in a right old muddle as to whose who so I ll stay as I am

It works perfectly well over on Mumsnet. You can stay as you are but change your user name if you’re posting something identifying, or if it’s advice you want for something personal.

Your user name remains the same throughout a thread, so you can’t pop back and argue with yourself.

SueDonim Sat 06-Sept-25 21:30:07

I was on MN in its early days, when it was also small and tight knit but there was still a facility to change one’s name, so that argument doesn’t stand, for me. confused

Rosie51 Sat 06-Sept-25 22:37:28

Good post Doodledog. It's rather patronising isn't it to assume GNetters couldn't cope with name changes, edit buttons and the like. And if we are so old and doddery at least highlighting the OP's posts would keep things clearer for us smile

rafichagran Sat 06-Sept-25 22:55:29

I agree Doodledog In my personal opinion we should be treated the same as mumsnet. I fail to see what a smaller closenit site has to to with it.

When I joined I was given the option to have a second name. I hardly ever use it but if someone that I have guessed lives fairly near me and may know the same people that I do I occasionally use it. Depends on the subject. I go to my details and click on it. I thought everyone had one.

Sadgrandma Sun 07-Sept-25 08:06:49

I joined during the pandemic when I was devastated not to be able to see my DGD who we had looked after two days a week, hence my name. However, I am no longer sad and would appreciate being able to change my name please.
