New here - question about site appearance

It's not a font, it's a typeface.

There's no such thing as a stand alone font - a font is always a variation or adaptation of an original typeface design.

Yes, you can by using a free browser extension.

Different ones exist for different operating systems e.g. Font Changer for Firefox is very easy to use.

There are two alternatives to layout, the mobile site and desktop site but I think the font remains the same. Plain, easy to read and, as grumppa says, has stood the test of time.

It would be handy to be able to see any responses by the OP in a different colour. Mumsnet does this so it can't be a problem.

The only thing I would like to change is the addition of a ‘like’ button ( not, repeat not, a ‘dislike’ button ) but people can’t handle that apparently.Too sensitive.

the only issue i find is with the watched ones its a bit muddly i would prefer more boxed instead of borderless sort of staggered often i do not bother sadly with following threads as its hard to decipher

I would say the font is old rather than old-fashioned; it is easily read, very commonly used, and has stood the test of time.

I'm sure the founders did invest time and capital to launch and build the community initially but this is a commercial platform designed to pay for itself as well as making a profit through advertising and partnerships. It is not a service sustained by someone's personal fortune.

I just looked up Mumsnet as a whole - it typically generates £7 million to over £10 million annually. net profits £1 - 2 million-ish (depending on the advertising market).

It is not a charity.

OMG I joined a year later. At least here one can find what one is looking for which I find impossible elsewhere.

The site and font, etc., might be ''old fashioned'' or might not be, but Gransnet creators pay a fortune for the site developers to keep it going year after year, and keep it free for us Gransnetters to use.

It was first launched on the 5th May 2011, and they're doing a brilliant job as always.

Yes, everything about the site is quite old fashioned!
It does work on the whole though.

The font is very old fashioned you are right and I thought that too when I joined up.
Now however I just accept it. Not sure I even notice it much now.
...it is certainly "different"

Of course anyone can comment on the site, new or otherwise. I am relatively new here too. I don’t have a problem with the font or the site but don’t belong to other sites so can’t really compare.

This typeface is old fashioned but so is the site design. Keeping it simple seems to be the plan and it won't change while people are happy to keep posting. To date, no suggested improvements have been implemented although an edit function is often requested.

I don’t see any problem with it as it is.

This typeface is easy and clear to read. Other typefaces in common use are not.
