We've been asked by L'Oreal to find out from gransnetters about beauty tips that have been passed between the generations.

So, what beauty tips did you get from your mother? Maybe she had some great skincare tips that you've followed for years? Or perhaps you have some beauty tips that you've shared with your daughter? Or maybe some tips that you definitely won't be handing down!

Whatever your top tips are - L'Oreal would love to hear about them!

Everyone who adds a comment to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a L'Oreal goodie bag worth £200.

Please note your anonymous comments may be included on L'Oreal's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Add glitter eyliner to your eyes always looks so pretty

My Mum always used to tell me off for rubbing my eyes saying I would encourage the wrinkles. I do take heed of this advice now. I'm pretty sure her Mum told her never to smile or laugh for the same reason. I never saw my Nan smile or laugh but my Mum certainly makes up for it!

I have always told my daughter to drink lots of water and get lots of sleep

The mantra 'Beauty need no ornament.'

As well as that, she told me to moisturise a lot.

Always put oil in your hair to leave it silky and health when washed. This one worked wonders for my frizzy and often unmanageable hair.

Less is more.

My mum swears by moisturising every night and I must say it's catching on with me, I am slowly getting into the habit of it!

My mother had beautiful soft clear skin all her life and never used anything other than Palmolive soap and occasionally Pond's Vanushing cream. Sadly she did not pass this on to me as my face has always been dry, especially in winter with the cold winds so I use moisturising products designed for my age group. My advice to my daughter was simply to find out by trial and error what suited her skin and stick to it but to make sure she checked from time to time to see if maybe an upgrade was needed to a better moiturising product. No matter how good the cosmetics applied without a suitable base it could all be in vain.

Just smile! If you have a great smile and lovely personality, it doesn't matter too much what you look like.

My mum isn't the best with beauty tips but my Nan has always impressed on me the importance of looking after my skin. I use Elizabeth Arden face and throat capsules as recommended by her and have never looked back. She still rings me whenever she sees a beauty bargain on the shopping channels. Her latest bit of advice has been Leighton Denny nail products to protect my nails and she has convinced me to try eyebrow threading with her when we next go shopping smile

From my grandmother - brush your hair with 100 strokes a day. From my mother always moisutise. From my daughter - always use a primer. From me to my duaghter - use as little make up as possible.

My Mother passed on advice to use Fullers Earth as a face mask, Oil of Ulay moisturiser, never to use soap on my face, drink plenty of water to hydrate my very dry skin, find a good hairdresser and stick with him/her as they will get to 'know' my hair and lastly, never scrimp when buying perfume, always wear a decent one.

Both DDs grew up with these bits of knowledge and when they turned 16, rather than waste what little money they had on the wrong make up, I treated them to a make up lesson, what and how to apply for a natural look.

Ponds Cold Cream was what my gran used - she died at 92 with skin like a baby's bottom!

Boil distilled water with a green tea or white tea bag, let the tea infuse in the water and then freeze it into ice cubes and use instead of a toner.

I was told to splash my face with warm water before cleansing to open the pores then splash with colder water afterwards to close them again.

cheryl100 Tue 17-Feb-15 20:16:38

My Mum always used to massage her neck with cream using upward motions....she is convinced this prevents turkey neck and so I do the same!

Always take your make up off before bedtime. On the odd occasion that I have not heeded this advice I've looked a mess next morning.

Minnibix Tue 17-Feb-15 20:08:34

My mother always taught me to be well groomed, her motto was you only get one chance to make a good first impression.

The tips she passed on to me was to wash and cleanse & moisturise you face neck before bed as that is when the skin replenishes itself and it will do most good, not sure if that is true but it is not doing me any harm.

SimbaandJane68 Tue 17-Feb-15 19:25:40

My mother told me never squeeze spots anywhere! But especially on your face. She told me not too over pluck eyebrows, and to never pluck above the eyebrow. We never used soap on our faces, also and this has been a winner wear sunglasses even in winter sunshine, no wrinkle between the eyes. I follow the things she says, she looks good, and my skin looks very good. Thanks mum.

"Don't forget to moisturise. And smile - no-one likes a miserable b***er!

bubblingz Tue 17-Feb-15 16:02:30

Never ever ever wash your face with soap or use flannels

elff73 Tue 17-Feb-15 15:15:01

My mum passed on her Nivea to me, she always made sure she used it every morning and night to moisturise, its good for the hands, face, body and great for your lips in this cold weather. Always put moisture on because there is a lot of things around to dry your skin out.

bebe2 Tue 17-Feb-15 14:33:26

Always moisturise morning and night. She gave me this advice when I was seventeen and I have adhered to this rigidly (I'm now 61) and I believe her wise words have paid off.

lilybet Tue 17-Feb-15 06:32:13

My Mother always washed her face with warm water and a soft flannel no soap. Once a week she cleaned her teeth with salt and soot from our chimney. My Mother had beautiful clear skin. She also had all her own white teeth when she passed away.

carowood Tue 17-Feb-15 03:45:25

My mother taught me to moisturise my face regularly and look after my teeth
