We all know that beneath every mild-mannered gransnetter lies the spirit of a younger, and perhaps wilder you - so we're asking what thing from your past your family or friends might be surprised at.

Whether it was that short stint as a rock groupie, being arrested on a CND rally, or even sporting a punk haircut and being expelled from school for it - L'Oreal would love to hear about them.

Take a look at L'Oreal's video and see what other surprises people have in their pasts:

Myself, my then future, now ex, husband and family were banned from a pub for fighting. The men were defending the honour of us women because a group of guys in the pub had made remarks to us as we tried to pass them to go to the loo.

I smoked once or twice when I was younger? I'm renowned for wearing my good shoes and my own mum never found out about it, so it was a shock for my daughter when I told her ;) She was also shocked and appalled at my treatment of an ex-boyfriend: he was the loveliest guy, and even I now sometimes wonder why I broke up with him. But I just wanted to end things, and instead of putting my big girl boots on I always let my mum answer the door, and told her to say I wasn't in to him so I wouldn't have to face him. He kept coming round for so long, it was weeks before he finally gave up. Not that ground breaking stuff really as like I said, I'm known for staying out of trouble, but my daughter's reactions sure show how out of character it is for me!

I was a regular attendee of the Rocky Horror live shows and have the photos to prove it. I still know all the lyrics and audience responses so continue to shock them to this day!

I got thrown out of an Indian restaurant on Christmas Eve for dancing on the table with a waiter. Doesn't inspire sharp intakes of breath from my grown up children - I look forward to hearing (via their children) their own 'confessions' in a few years time!

When the phone rings & unknown number comes up, my answer is I do not talk to people I do not know or give them my opinions.

The same message applies to L'Oreal's Perfect Age campaign. I would think most people are making up an answer.

I once snogged someone 'off the telly'. I'll never say who - it's too embarrassing!

boheminan Fri 08-May-15 19:43:15

I went to the Isle of Wight Festival and slept through the Jimi Hendrix Experience performance sad

chippy3084 Fri 08-May-15 22:59:19

I must be boring because I can't think of anything lol

Soutra Fri 08-May-15 23:38:00

I just wanted to say that as thread titles go this leaves a lot to be desired. You could fall asleep before you got to the end of it grin

Ana Fri 08-May-15 23:44:01

You could fall asleep reading some of the posts! Why on earth would anyone's children be 'shocked' by the fact that they smoked a few fags when they were a youngster, or slept through a bit of a pop festival...? confused

boheminan Sat 09-May-15 00:01:09

Goodnight Soutra/*Ana*. Perhaps it's just funshock (not sure you know what that is) to reminisce. Goodbye GN, I'm off - can't take the playground politics anymore. Here's to the elbow of all the bullies on here...carry on beating up all the others you don't agree with. I'm off to calmer, more equal pastures grin

Stood naked on top of a Norfolk Broads cruiser

pusinky Sat 09-May-15 14:49:58

My daughter would be shocked to hear that I lived in a squat for a few months. It was great fun.

Clairemike Sat 09-May-15 16:17:10

Hitch hiked
Smoked the funny stuff
Drank more than I should
Danced on a bar table

Amenhotep Sat 09-May-15 16:37:25

I was learning the violin, not very successfully, a fellow class mate just fell about laughing at my attempts and I hit him over the head with my violin and broke the bridge (of the violin)!! Got hauled up before the Headmistress!

deanhead Sat 09-May-15 17:23:49

i used to play traunt from school and buy cigs with my dinner money

nightowl Sat 09-May-15 18:13:08

Have you never told your daughter that you lived in a squat for a few months pusinsky? Why on earth not? My children think it's hilarious that I lived in a squat for a year and got taken to court and evicted (by the GLC -happy days!). They don't think it's particularly shocking.

Why are you all so reticent?

peanutmum Sat 09-May-15 22:51:02

In my day it was 'sex before marriage', horror, horror !!!!!!!!!!

How times have changed

sweir1 Sun 10-May-15 08:32:58

I did a bit of modelling when I was younger!

Soutra Sun 10-May-15 09:04:26

Good grief Boheminan where did that come from?

perhaps it's just fun, not sure you know what that is, to reminisce

Well pardon me! How does my complaint that this is hardly the best written thread title or Ana's scepticism that some of these anecdotes might "shock" anybody , constitute playground politics or the actions of bullies?

FFS if I can't express an opinion about semantics without being shot down in flames, who's the bully now??

Wash your mouth out with soap and water, my girl!angry

mo3733 Sun 10-May-15 10:50:21

I got expelled from school

GeminiJen Sun 10-May-15 11:14:50

Soutra
I can't be sure but I suspect that Boheminan's reaction came from the fact that there have been several quite negative contributions on this thread and your fairly mild comment may have been construed as yet another.
I know that I started off thinking that this was a fun, light hearted thread, escapist even...much like the adverts. Indeed, I was about to add to it. Then I saw Merlotgran's comment about 'competition junkies that make no contribution to Gransnet' (sic) and decided not to, especially as it became clear that there was some support for her view.
I'd like to think that Gransnet could at least aspire to be an inclusive body, respectful of individual differences and opinions....but I guess we mirror society as a whole...
Note: This is not a competition entry, just a sad reflection sad

GeminiJen Sun 10-May-15 20:28:25

P.S. Note to 'Gransnet Central'.
Time to give some thought to establishing some ground rules (netiquette) for the site?

mooms Sun 10-May-15 20:44:42

When I was a little girl, I was staying with my uncle & aunt in a caravan. Well, I wanted a wee in the night, piddled on the floor- in the morning insisted it wasn't me and Sharpy the dog got the blame. Oops!

Soutra Sun 10-May-15 20:48:56

Thank you GeminiJen, I have to admit I hadn't read any of the "entries"!! Just thought the thread title the clumsiest evergrin.
And mine wasn't an entry eithergrin!
#pedantsRus!!
