We all know that beneath every mild-mannered gransnetter lies the spirit of a younger, and perhaps wilder you - so we're asking what thing from your past your family or friends might be surprised at.

Whether it was that short stint as a rock groupie, being arrested on a CND rally, or even sporting a punk haircut and being expelled from school for it - L'Oreal would love to hear about them.

Take a look at L'Oreal's video and see what other surprises people have in their pasts:

After marrying much too young I was left with 2 beautiful boys under the age of two. Is it any surprise that I went a bit (a lot) wild once I had the chance to get out again?
I suppose I felt very insecure and unattractive as I had been abandoned for an even younger woman so I dated and slept with as many men as I could. This made me feel better for a short while but obviously it was not the answer. I am ashamed of that time in my life which some 40 or so years ago was not normal behaviour!
Fortunately i have been happily married now for nearly 20 years and no longer feel insecure and unloved although I am not very attractive!

Well said, absent. I only looked at this thread because I spotted your name on the active list and couldn't resist seeing what you'd been up to! wink

There are some competition junkies on here that make no contribution to Gransnet so I couldn't care less what they did when they were young.

My kids know all about my outrageous behaviour. grin

What a collection of innocent little "sins" – doesn't seem much like the sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll generation. I doubt there is much about her still fairly outrageous mother that would shock absentdaughter but I have no desire to go delving into my past to win some paltry – or even huge – prize just to amuse a bunch of people who don't know me and don't care anyway or to provide fodder for an advertising campaign.

Unfortunately no Greenham Common skeletons in my closet...

Sadly the thing that my daughter finds most cringeworthy is when she sees the teens dancing on old re runs of Top of the Pops and enquiries how me and her Dad danced..! No doubt my grandchildren who both attend street dance classes will be equally horrified!

My husband is of further embarrassment potential with his droopy moustache in his late 20's and those horrific diamond pattern old men's jumpers. Bringing out old photos always such a joy for her.. Ha ha!

When I failed my first driving test I lied and told my family I had passed. I only drove if I was accompanied, and just kept 'forgetting' to remove my L plates, but it actually took another two tests before I passed. It's still my little secret; twenty years on.

My children would not be shocked by anything we might have done. They know we were young in the 60s and tend to assume that we did far worse things than we ever did in reality!

I was on a coach trip from work to a club in Manchester and was so busy dancing with a young man at the end of the evening i left it late & could not find our coach - it had left without me as my friend had got on the bus and fallen straight asleep with my bag & coat!! I had to sit in the back of a police van & wait but they came back from me after realising i was missing half way down the M62 - my dad was surprised when i got home as he was going to work!!

I bunked off school for 3 days with my boyfriend and spent all the time trying to forge my mum's signature for the letter to give to my form teacher when I got back.

After all the times I have explained to my son the importance of being on time and making sure you have read documents properly I can't tell him or my grand daughter that in my late 20s six of us missed the plane home from Turkey by 24 hours because I read the date on the tickets wrong. When we should have been flying for home we were jumping of a mountain on paragliders. The only plane that could bring us back to the UK was to Glasgow. It was a very long journey home to Birmingham from there smile

In the 60's when I went on holiday with friends I used to wear paper knickers to save washing and see through dresses which were the fashion then.

Both my children were amazed when I told them a few weeks ago that in the late 50s I used to ride on the back of a motorbike to Stonehenge for the Summer Solstice.

I used to wait til my mum went out with her friends at the week end and then me and my mates would sneak out and spend hours round at the local 'bad boys' hangout when I was about 14! I was quite strict on my kids too about them roaming the streets too late at night so this would really shock them! Shhhhhhhh

In sheep farming country I met a flock which had escaped from their field and was hurrying down the lane towards a main road. I opened someone's garden gate, ushered them in and closed it behind them.

When I won a competition to sit on stage with the Beatles on the set of Thank Your Lucky Stars in 1965, I was also sent a letter asking if I would appear on the show as one of the go-go dancers. I was a shy, under confident 16 year old and, despite all my friends' egging me on, I wouldn't do it. What a silly girl not to take the opportunity. My daughter would say 'mum for goodness sake, why didn't you?' I had many times chasing pop stars of the day around the streets when they were appearing in my city, including an attempt at hiding in a broom cupboard to jump out at the Beatles as they came off stage. The shy, under-confidence went out of the window when it came to my heros! blush

I dont think that they ever stay kittylester.

Jane10 Sat 02-May-15 10:49:02

I once came 4th in a GoGo dancing competition wearing a pair of red leather hot pants and a lovely velour boob tube! Oh God. What was I thinking?!

henetha Sat 02-May-15 09:58:38

I couldn't possibly say! My family would never speak to me again...blush

I used to bunk off school in the 6th form to spend the afternoon at my boyfriend's flat. I used to go home at the normal time so my mum never knew. I only told her on our 25th wedding anniversary. He had to move out of the flat and we rented a flat together while I was still at school.
My children have led very sedate lives and think I was wild.

kittylester Sat 02-May-15 07:38:38

We do seem to have attracted a lot of new members with interesting pasts! Hopefully they will stay and enliven our non_competition threads!

Trying to impress my future father-in-law over dinner I confused "masticate" with "masturbate". I thought he was going to choke to death....

cornishgirl54 Fri 01-May-15 23:20:06

I was a hippy! I lived in a squat, there was no back door because the police had kicked it in at some point. I walked around bare footed and handed out leaflets for the Peace Pledge Union and went to festivals. Nowadays it's Hotter Shoes and central heating lol

MyBeadyEye Fri 01-May-15 23:19:23

Think I stole from a charity wishing well once. Well, I woke up with a bad hangover, sleeves wet to elbows, jeans wet to knees and pockets straining under the weight of £14.98 in 1 and 2p pieces!

sweetej Fri 01-May-15 22:50:22

When I was in Secondary school, me & a group of friends would say we had hockey practice after school, then bunk off all day, catch the train to London and go to the Trocadero to play the machines and go on the bumper cars.

Now at 39, my dad never found me out

L'Oreal are indeed still testing on animals rosequartz. Take note of their disclaimer:

'An exception could only be made if regulatory authorities demanded it for safety or regulatory purposes.'

Which means that when they sell their products in China they agree to all their products being tested on animals, in a country with few if any animal welfare regulations.

Many companies include this disclaimer. What it really means is 'we don't test our products on animals except when we do'. The truly reputable companies don't sell their products in China for exactly that reason.

What things have you done in the past that might shock your children if they ever found out (or indeed did shock them if they have already uncovered the truth!!)?

Too many 'incidents', I'm afraid ... but too juicy to share many of them here, think I'll reserve it for my memoirs. smile

Instead, I will say ... I HAVE NEVER DONE ANYTHING shocking/disreputable/illegal/etc. .... EVER!!
I was/am a goodie-two-shoes through and through!!!!
