HearPeers Mentors would like to help answer your questions about hearing loss and hearing implants.

Here’s what HearPeers has to say: “There are more than 11 million people in the UK with some form of hearing loss – that’s one in six. Research shows it takes on average ten years for people to address the problem.

Finding out you have hearing loss can be a shock and the early signs may be subtle. If you or a loved one is affected by hearing loss, you may not know where to turn to for support. Patricia and Richard are happy to answer your questions based on their experience with hearing loss and the journey to receiving their implant. The HearPeers Mentor Programme is a community of hearing implant users and their family members, who are dedicated to supporting individuals who may be going through similar experiences."

Patricia

Patricia lost her hearing as a result of Meniere’s disease and spent a number of years struggling with hearing aids until she eventually received a hearing implant in 2013. She says it has transformed her life, allowing her to socialise again and spend more time with her grandchildren. She now provides support to people in a similar position who contact her via the HearPeers Mentor Programme, a role which she says she’s proud to undertake.

Richard

Richard has been affected by hearing loss since the age of 30. As a result, communicating with friends and colleagues became a struggle. Richard says receiving a cochlear implant gave him his life back. Being able to communicate with his daughter in Australia and participate fully in work meetings has had a significant impact on his quality of life. Ask Richard about his hearing journey.

Ask Patricia and Richard your questions by posting them below by 4 June 2017. We’ll select 20 questions and post responses as soon as possible. All who post a question (whether it’s answered or not) will be entered into a prize draw to win a £200 voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Hi Patricia and Richard
How long was it before you realised that professional help was needed to address your hearing loss?
My husband obviously has hearing loss but is in denial and says things like ' Well I had a cold not long ago, it will get better'.

I suffer from tinnitus which is gradually getting worse & worse. I now have to use subtitles on the television but the worst thing is the constant whistling. Is there anything you can suggest to try & distract from the noise & will a hearing aid help or will it just make the whistling louder?

I have 'cookie bite' hearing loss in both ears and I'm sure my mid range hearing loss is getting even worse as I'm getting older. I wondered how you dealt with the frustrations and embarrassment of having to ask people repeat themselves?

Can listening to the radio using in-ear headphones contribute to hearing loss? Speech radio not loud music.

hi

At what age do older people start to lose their hearing and would this effect driving

I have just got some NHS hearing aids. My hearing is not too bad at the moment, I have trouble sometimes hearing my daughters, but can hear my husband ok, without them. My problem is that I wear glasses all the time & find wearing both together very uncomfortable.
Apparently there are glasses that can have hearing aids attached, but they are expensive. Do you have any advice please. I do not want to spend a large amount & then find they are still not suitable for me.

I've been told that my hearing is not 100% - however I am worried that the person may be trying to push his services as a supplier of hearing aids

Hi Patricia,

I also suffer from Meniere's and also Migraneous Vertigo along with Fibromyalgia and despite having my hearing checked and being told it is ok, I really struggle to hear people especially in a crowded environment and find myself nodding or shaking my head according to facial expressions while not hearing them. What would you advise me to do?

You often see opticians etc. offering hearing tests nowadays. Would you recommend going to one of these places if you are concerned, or just go to your GP and ask them to refer you to the hospital?

Are the hearing aids that are available on the NHS as good as an aid that is purchased privately? and if not what should we be looking for in a digital hearing aid so we know we are getting the best there is.
My husband suffers with deafness and tinnitus in both ears.

Are there any solutions to watching television with people who all need the volume at a different level, other than a hearing aid.

pfcpompeysarah Tue 30-May-17 21:28:40

I have been very deaf in one ear since birth and now the other ear has deteriorated to the point where both are under conversation level on the audio tests, I am now having a hearing aid fitted but worry about the adjustment period. I suffer from dizziness although balance tests at the hospital in the audiology came back fine, I also suffer tinnitus, ear ache and headaches but as yet, nobody can ascertain the cause, will this affect my ability to adjust to using aids. I also am able to hear noise, but cannot ascertain what exactly is being said, its almost like mumbling or white noise in front of me when I am trying to lip read someone, will a hearing aid help with this and clarify the sounds or will it just raise the noise in general?
