This sponsored discussion is now closed. Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts on this thread.

As we get older, we often think about what our legacy will be; what memories, relationships or objects we leave behind to reflect how we’d like to be remembered. Making a Will is a way to communicate those wishes and the things that are important to someone are often reflected by the things they include. Cancer Research UK would love to hear what matters to you when you think about your legacy.

Here’s what Cancer Research UK has to say: “We know that when writing a Will, your friends and family should always come first. Once they’re taken care of, if you have even just a small gift leftover to leave for Cancer Research UK, this will still make a huge difference. We know from meeting our wonderful supporters that people have left us a gift in their Will because they are passionate about helping to beat cancer and want to continue when they are gone.”

What have you thought about leaving behind? Have you detailed this in a Will? Would you consider leaving a gift to charity in your Will? Would Cancer Research UK be a consideration? How would you like people to remember you when you’re gone?

All who share their thoughts and experiences on the thread below will be entered into a prize draw where 1 lucky GNer will win a £300 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck,
GNHQ

Guide dogs will get a donation from me.

In my will I have left money to two animal charities which I support. Animals cannot speak for themselves and are cruelly treated in some instances. I hope that the money I leave them will go some way to helping them. (Cats Protection and the Donkey Sanctuary)

I would love to leave a deposit for my grandchildren to be able to buy their first home. My husbands grandparents did this for us which enabled us to buy our first home and get on the property ladder. I have been fretful ever since!

Candelle Wed 22-Jan-20 11:21:07

We give a monthly direct debit sum to one charity and if any bits and bobs of money come our way, we donate to our 'pet' charity'. Oh, this is not an animal charity, it is one that is close to us through past family illness!

We have both made wills but have not left a legacy to either of the above charities. Next time we update our wills I will do so, although whether to arrange for a lump sum or a percentage is a decision yet to be made.

Candelle Wed 22-Jan-20 11:28:50

I have just re-read the original piece from Cancer Research UK and feel my entry has not answered all the questions that were posed.

We have made wills.

Our estate goes directly to our daughters and for them to distribute further if they so wish.

There are no named bequests in our wills.

When reviewing our wills I will think about giving either a percentage or named amount to charity.

Cancer Research UK could benefit although I would have to research the different cancer charities. There seem to be many of them.

Perhaps they are all worthy (I am now thinking of Chief Executive pay/how much of donations reach the front line, etc. All factors in any decision)?

I intend leaving money to a local charity that arranges exercise classes, massages and events for the disabled. They don’t get funding from the main national charity so need to constantly raise funds.

DebbieMoon Wed 22-Jan-20 13:02:16

I have several charities specified in my will, each for a percentage of whatever I end up leaving behind...

Breeze81 Wed 22-Jan-20 13:28:23

I want my legacy to be all the volunteering I've done over the years for animal and homeless charities.

glenka Wed 22-Jan-20 14:18:10

i would like to leave a lot to charities that are close to my heart.

funsizescot1975 Wed 22-Jan-20 14:35:33

I have a will in which a portion of money gpes to various cancer charities and the rest goes to my family. I think it is important to have this sorted.

juliedee Wed 22-Jan-20 14:37:50

have done our wills hoping to enjoy ourselves and leave whatever is left to nieces and nephew and some also to charity too

greig23 Wed 22-Jan-20 15:24:06

id like to leave money to charities as i have no kids

sammylea80 Wed 22-Jan-20 16:03:19

I don't think that I will ave much to leave, but I will leave what I do have to my nieces.

AngelaMCGF Wed 22-Jan-20 16:38:12

No, I do not think I would leave anything in my will. I try very hard to support as many charities as I can while we are still earning. I feel we would not be leaving much money only property and I think to leave money to charity could cause a problem for my children.

karenweedon Wed 22-Jan-20 16:46:36

I donate to charities now but have not made a provision in my will for this. I hope my legacy is to have taught my children to be kind people and look after others

Holidayenthusiast Wed 22-Jan-20 16:51:58

I suffer with a respiratory disorder and am thinking of leaving something to the British Lung Foundation. Money received by this charity is used to support people suffering with respiratory conditions and for research to find better treatments.

volcanopete Wed 22-Jan-20 17:04:29

I'm happy to leave this world in the knowledge that I have served the public to the best of my ability.

Andrea1 Wed 22-Jan-20 17:28:23

We donate to charity as & when we can. We will be leaving everything to our children.

Moocow Wed 22-Jan-20 18:04:59

What have you thought about leaving behind?
Whatever I have left in the hope it will help family in whatever way it can.
Have you detailed this in a Will?
Yes
Would you consider leaving a gift to charity in your Will?
Not at present
Would Cancer Research UK be a consideration?
Might, might not but I think there are so many valuable charities and sometimes I think that if I had a money tree it would be local charities at the top of the list
How would you like people to remember you when you’re gone?
With love and happiness

jessiecat Wed 22-Jan-20 18:07:12

I have made a will and everything will go to my two children as well as having a life insurance policy. I have not made any provision in my will for a charity donation but I regularly raise funds for the homeless and a heart charity.

devito Wed 22-Jan-20 18:32:21

I'm not worried about leaving a legacy. My son will inherit all I have and good luck to him

pappillion Wed 22-Jan-20 19:01:19

I currently donate to several charities including Marie Curie, and intend to give larger sums at intervals that suit me.
I believe you give when you live, and I really don't want to force my son after my death to have to donate from my Estate, having recently dealt myself with my Mothers Estate, who survived 2 different types of Cancer then finally passed with a 3rd Cancer, donating would not have made anyone happier as we literally had 10 days from diagnosis to death.....
The loss was extremely hard on everyone my father still has difficulty dealing with her loss, & we did have several charities including cancer charities phoning within a month of her loss asking for money.
So charities can have my cash whilst I'm alive my son gets it when I'm dead, upto him then to decide I would never force him via my Will, which was done many years ago in his favour.

cillastubbs Wed 22-Jan-20 19:24:54

I have left everything to my daughters. I give regularly to charities but they are not included in my will

kevincharley Wed 22-Jan-20 21:12:27

I intend to have nothing left to leave to anyone.
