With the stress and uncertainty around social isolation and lockdown, more of us than ever before have found ourselves comfort eating. Our latest research shows that 43% of us are snacking more than usual and 30% are struggling to eat a healthy diet. It’s all too easy to reach for a biscuit, and then another, then another. And suddenly the packet is gone. With that in mind, Soreen would like to hear your tips for healthy snacking, whether that’s ensuring guilt-free portion sizes or resisting the call of the biscuit tin.

Here’s what Soreen has to say: “Soreen, British baker of the Original Malt Loaf, has been enjoyed as a teatime treat in homes for over 80 years. Whilst many of us know that a slice of deliciously squidgy Soreen is perfect with a cuppa, it’s less well known that Soreen is a much healthier option than other sweet treats.

Our Malt Loaf contains over 40% less sugar and 80% less fat than the average cake. Plus if you’re looking for a tasty portion controlled snack, our individually wrapped Lunchbox Loaves are less than 100 calories each and our Sliced Loaf is just 65 calories per slice.

We know that for many of you the only way to eat Soreen is with butter! Well you’ll be pleased to hear that two buttered slices of malt loaf come in at just 150 calories and contain 40% less sugar and 50% less fat than the average slice of cake.

So you can still enjoy Soreen as a healthier swap without compromising on taste!”

Do you find portion controlled snacks help you control your snacking? How do you prevent the temptation of yet another biscuit? Do you find yourself wanting a snack when you know you’re definitely not hungry? How do you manage it?

Whatever your tips for healthy snacking, share them with Soreen in the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one GNer will win a £100 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Fresh fruit and a little low calorie cream cheese on top of my Soreen gives me the pick up I need without too many calories!

Add low fat spread and sliced banana

josiew Tue 16-Jun-20 12:00:40

I try not to snack at all, but if I am feeling peckish, a banana or a drink of fruit juice will do.

I am currently going through the 'hungry' stage of cutting down sugar. When I feel myself reaching for a snack I take a spoonful of seeds such as pumpkin or pomegranate seeds and spend time chewing until the 'psychological' hunger subsides. Then if I'm genuinely hungry I can eat something else like a banana to top up until mealtime.

Snack as much and as often as you like - when you're full stop. It's a good idea to snack on things that are good for your soul.

I make my snacks up, so a couple of crackers with cheese or a tiny tub of grapes and cherry tomatoes. By portion controlling regularly I find I'm less likely to over eat.

Try to have a piece of fruit, doesn't always work

I bake my own cakes so know the ingredients and tend to have a small slice or cupcake with a coffee. Mostly for healthier snacking I make up tupperware boxes with different items - e.g. a box of green salad leaves with fresh raw garden peas, quartered cherry tomatoes & radishes, fresh baby beetroot, a sprinkling of mixed seeds & a few peanuts; or a winter salad with finely sliced/chopped white cabbage, red cabbage, carrot, different coloured peppers slices of apple, pear, celery, mixed nuts (I share my mixed nuts and monkey nuts with the squirrel!); or fresh fruit salads with as many fruits as I have (cherries & berries with grapes and chunks or different melons is my favourite). Luckily I like most fruits (except avocado pears) so can vary the contents and not get bored with any combination, and can have sweet fruits or citrus ones or a mixture. Sometimes I'll add slices of boiled egg or ham or a few prawns but usually veggie variations. I find these foods take longer to eat so the snack lasts a lot longer than having a few biscuits etc. I also like that I can pick at it - meaning there will be times I only want a few mouthfuls and other times I'll work my way through the box during a film. If I need extras for my snacking I'll either add something like an oven-baked roll to my salad or have a toasted hot cross bun with honey or jam.

I just make sure I have healthy food readily available to snack on, like fruit, nuts, Soreen, natural yoghurt and don’t have biscuits or crisps in the house.

Lisapaige24 Mon 15-Jun-20 13:44:57

I don’t buy anything in that is unhealthy and I prepare nice healthy snack boxes to have each day as I have to stick to a healthy diet due to health reasons

allow myself a snack with a cuppa about 11ish when I take next dose of medications. either a slice of toast or 2 slices of malt loaf with butter or honey, (a treat from childhood) even sometimes slice banana on top of the honey if feeling peckish. or 2-4 biscuits (depends upon type and size), or a small banana or if have any, rare, a slice of cake. i have found need something for medications as upset stomach unless taken with food. also this is a treat to look forward to after spending morning doing housework, gardening, training/playing with adolescent pup/dog. usually me and pup doze cuddled up for 1/2 hour before health issues and pain becomes to much. find small snack size meals are easier for me to eat/digest than a proper size meal.

A piece of fruit... An apple, orange or banana does the trick for me. If I am feeling a bit peckish though my number one rule is to drink a glass of water then wait 5 minutes before snacking as we often confuse thirst for hunger.

I have loved the taste of Soreen for years now but often eat it lightly toasted with butter, I find that really scrumptious!

laurenold Mon 15-Jun-20 09:17:01

I really love hummus as a snack and usually choose carrot sticks or cucumber over breadsticks to dip

nelliedean Mon 15-Jun-20 07:23:49

I always have a fruit bowl and nut pot for snacking: tasty and healthy.

Claredowson Mon 15-Jun-20 06:15:00

I try not to leave too long before the evening meal. If I’m at work and come home late too hungry.... fatal. I’ll eat everything I can lay my hands on ?

elisatrueman Mon 15-Jun-20 05:33:10

I don’t really eat cake or biscuits as I have an under active thyroid, occasionally I have a breakfast biscuit. I also really like the little boxes of raisins you can get for a kids lunch , makes you feel like you’ve had something sweet

fullarton121 Sun 14-Jun-20 19:45:15

I really don't enjoy a soreen at all. Much prefer a lovely sweet biscuit.

MichStew Sun 14-Jun-20 19:38:40

I don't use portion-controlled snacks, except to the extent that I calorie count and therefore know roughly what my calorie intake is for any given snack. I tend to eat fruit rather than biscuits so the calorie intake is considerably lower. I also eat a lot of vegetables with my main meals which fill my stomach and prevent me feeling hungry and therefore wanting to snack.

My tip is to eat lots of fruit and vegetables and you should feel the need to snack less often, if at all (though I do sometimes succumb to the temptation of a Jaffa cake!)..

Ready cut carrot and cucumber stored in the fridge are great with a low fat homemade dip

greig23 Sun 14-Jun-20 16:15:51

drink lots of water and eat small fruit as snacks

midi1975 Sun 14-Jun-20 16:13:05

I like to eat Soreen topped with crisp slices of pear or apple. Helps to wards my 5- a- day fruit intake.
