With the stress and uncertainty around social isolation and lockdown, more of us than ever before have found ourselves comfort eating. Our latest research shows that 43% of us are snacking more than usual and 30% are struggling to eat a healthy diet. It’s all too easy to reach for a biscuit, and then another, then another. And suddenly the packet is gone. With that in mind, Soreen would like to hear your tips for healthy snacking, whether that’s ensuring guilt-free portion sizes or resisting the call of the biscuit tin.

Here’s what Soreen has to say: “Soreen, British baker of the Original Malt Loaf, has been enjoyed as a teatime treat in homes for over 80 years. Whilst many of us know that a slice of deliciously squidgy Soreen is perfect with a cuppa, it’s less well known that Soreen is a much healthier option than other sweet treats.

Our Malt Loaf contains over 40% less sugar and 80% less fat than the average cake. Plus if you’re looking for a tasty portion controlled snack, our individually wrapped Lunchbox Loaves are less than 100 calories each and our Sliced Loaf is just 65 calories per slice.

We know that for many of you the only way to eat Soreen is with butter! Well you’ll be pleased to hear that two buttered slices of malt loaf come in at just 150 calories and contain 40% less sugar and 50% less fat than the average slice of cake.

So you can still enjoy Soreen as a healthier swap without compromising on taste!”

Do you find portion controlled snacks help you control your snacking? How do you prevent the temptation of yet another biscuit? Do you find yourself wanting a snack when you know you’re definitely not hungry? How do you manage it?

Whatever your tips for healthy snacking, share them with Soreen in the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one GNer will win a £100 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I try to make sure I have plenty of healthy options for snacks - always easier in summer as I have fruit and veg from the garden to snack on. I buy only a limited number of treats, so they have to last till next shop

I'm borderline diabetic and have given up anything sugary for ages now, but I do so miss a slice of cake. I didn't realise that Soreen was low in sugar and fat. I am definitely going to buy some as soon as possible.
I tend to eat nuts between meals, unsalted ones, or the occasional cereal bar.
And sometimes an apple chopped up with cubes of low fat cheese. They taste good together.
The best way to avoid temptation is simply to not buy unhealthy foods.

Hi Kittylester

Gluten free for me too! Am highly Coeliac, so have to be very careful!!!

Morrissons do a nice Christmas cake, and sometime G/F fruit slices, but it is getting to one. 5 miles before getting to a main road, let alone a town!!!

Tesco and Sainsburys were hopeless last year.

Snack? I'm grazing!! Have been since Lockdown started, so now decided having put on unhealthy weight, and not being able to do my usual walking as exercise, to get strict with myself! NO SNACKING 3 healthy meals! Watch this space wink grin xx

Oh dear, i had forgotten about soreen as an option for my supermarket trolley! At present trying to snack healthily (!) I reach for fruit or nuts but nuts are so expensive And I worry about my teeth when I chomp away.

I am very much a snacker. I do find that buying individually wrapped healthy crunch bars or energy bars are a better idea than buying packets of biscuits - the temptation to scoff half the packet is usually too great! A jar of peanut butter (sustainable palm oil) and a teaspoon (used moderately) is another favourite.

If you find it difficult to moderate snacking, then reducing shopping can help. Because I am isolating and going out of the house as little as possible, I am shopping once a month and making use of fridge, freezer etc. If you can only eat what is in the house and can't replace it, then even if you binge on one day, over the month your snack intake is limited. Plus it does make you hesitate when you start to work out how many packets of biscuits and bars of chocolate you ate in the previous month, and contemplate putting that number through the till in one go!

Only buy what you will not feel guilty eating in the week and save treats on top shelf smile

At work I never snack, but now I'm in working from home it's tempting. Now I'm drinking a glass of water when I feel tempted to snack and then often forget about eating.

I pick fresh fruit from our garden, depending on what's available on the day (raspberries, blackberries, redcurrants, pears, apples and plums) and add it to low-fat yogurt that contains probiotic cultures. It adds to my 5-a-day and is good for gut health.

Simple - I don't buy them grin if it's not in the house I can't be tempted. Soreen are great because they're a happy medium with lots of variety. I do prefer the bigger loaves to the individually packaged ones though - too much edge and not enough middle in those for my liking!

On the whole I do like portion controlled snacks, but if they're not then I just make sure I do it myself - if it's a big bag or something like a malt loaf then when I open it I will immediately weigh/cut into portions, then put them in airtight tubs or resealable bags.

I never eat anything from it's original bag or packet unless it's acceptable to eat the whole thing, because that is fatal - once you start it's very hard to stop. I will also always make sure that if I have started with something containing more than one portion (eg a packet of biscuits) I will take out what I want, then put the rest away properly and go and sit down before I eat them. If the packet is still out on the side it's much easier to give into temptation, whereas if it's been put away in the tin you have to be much more mindful.

Another great thing is make healthy snacks easy - a lot of the reason we end up snacking on unhealthy things is because it's so easy to grab a packet of crisps or a biscuit. If you keep a pot of cut up fruit and veg in the fridge and a fruit bowl on the side it's just as easy to grab that and will help you make better choices (and as long as it's portion controlled you can add things like cheese or a dip when you're preparing it)

Snack options are chocolate oatcakes or stem ginger oatcakes or rice cakes with a thin layer of chocolate

I often feel like having a snack in late afternoon, so I often end up having a bowl of cereal as I'm not a fan of salty snacks and I try not to eat biscuits or sweets.

janeainsworth Fri 12-Jun-20 21:17:22

rozina my thoughts too.

rozina Fri 12-Jun-20 21:08:41

My hint on snacking. DON'T! If you have a healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner, there should be no need to snack. I can't remember the last time I snacked.

Over the lockdown me and my husband have started keto diet and I am amazed at how much cooking I actually do now the recipes are healthy I am really enjoying trying different things and I find you dont snack as your hunger is satisfied and the bonus have lost a bit of weight because of the lockdown its given me motivation to start something different

Watermelon fills and hydrates us really well. Always have some mixed nuts and raisins in the cupboard.

CompGirl23 Fri 12-Jun-20 19:53:05

I exercise every day indoors and outdoors so eating healthy is essential to me. I don't snack but if I were to have a something after working out or during it would be nuts, fruit, dried fruit like chopped apricots/ cranberries or a healthy natural seed bar bought or homemade to pick my energy levels up quickly. Greek yogurt is also good with a banana or granola if you're at home.

Wilsa Fri 12-Jun-20 16:54:59

My favourite healthy snack is greek yogurt and fruit

susie14 Fri 12-Jun-20 16:49:45

Sadly the biscuit box is a good friend so I find it's best not to buy biscuits or snacks and thereby remove temptation.

susiesioux Fri 12-Jun-20 16:43:24

I make my own protein balls, usually with oats, cocoa and date paste. Also flapjack made with apricots soaked in green tea which acts as the binding agent with oats, seeds and nuts.
Also all sorts of fruit, celery and carrot sticks, and i definitely think people think they need a snack when they just need water to rehydrate

Herbie9 Fri 12-Jun-20 16:42:05

I love the variety of Soreen loaves. The malt loaf is still my favourite but their banana loaf is delicious too particularly eaten with lots of butter and a banana. Have kept it down to one thick slice as I'm weight watching - or trying to! Did notice that they now do a sliced loaf. Very moreish.

cillastubbs Fri 12-Jun-20 16:37:24

I keep a dish in the fridge with easy to eat fruit, blueberries, strawberries, grapes, peeled mandarins and chopped melon and when I feel I want a snack I have something easy to hand

Lorraine379 Fri 12-Jun-20 16:11:27

Didn't snack when going in to work but on the days I now work from home the temptation is there. I do have a biscuit with my mid morning coffee but then prepare some veg sticks and fruit in the fridge to nibble on in the afternoon. A handful of nuts are also a good alternative.

hellymart Fri 12-Jun-20 15:42:51

Must admit to having a snack of a biscuit or two with a cup of coffee after we've taken the dog for a walk! I do like Soreen too - especially the banana one. I have a sweet tooth and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Life's too short to deprive yourself. All things in moderation, eh?!
