With the stress and uncertainty around social isolation and lockdown, more of us than ever before have found ourselves comfort eating. Our latest research shows that 43% of us are snacking more than usual and 30% are struggling to eat a healthy diet. It’s all too easy to reach for a biscuit, and then another, then another. And suddenly the packet is gone. With that in mind, Soreen would like to hear your tips for healthy snacking, whether that’s ensuring guilt-free portion sizes or resisting the call of the biscuit tin.

Here’s what Soreen has to say: “Soreen, British baker of the Original Malt Loaf, has been enjoyed as a teatime treat in homes for over 80 years. Whilst many of us know that a slice of deliciously squidgy Soreen is perfect with a cuppa, it’s less well known that Soreen is a much healthier option than other sweet treats.

Our Malt Loaf contains over 40% less sugar and 80% less fat than the average cake. Plus if you’re looking for a tasty portion controlled snack, our individually wrapped Lunchbox Loaves are less than 100 calories each and our Sliced Loaf is just 65 calories per slice.

We know that for many of you the only way to eat Soreen is with butter! Well you’ll be pleased to hear that two buttered slices of malt loaf come in at just 150 calories and contain 40% less sugar and 50% less fat than the average slice of cake.

So you can still enjoy Soreen as a healthier swap without compromising on taste!”

Do you find portion controlled snacks help you control your snacking? How do you prevent the temptation of yet another biscuit? Do you find yourself wanting a snack when you know you’re definitely not hungry? How do you manage it?

Whatever your tips for healthy snacking, share them with Soreen in the thread below and you’ll be entered into a prize draw where one GNer will win a £100 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Reading about this survey made my mouth water! I haven't had a Soreen loaf for ages but I love it and it will be on my shopping list next week. Normally I try and snack on fruit as I feel it is better for me but I also quite like the large Snack-a-jacks (especially the chocolate chip ones) as they give me that taste of chocolate but are also low calorie. However the thought of having some Soreen Loaf has now put me right off everything, I may not be able to wait until next week..I can see I will be popping into the shop before that! As to the question of how do I control only having one biscuit..I don't. I have absolutely no willpower so I try not to have tempting things like biscuits in the house at all. Otherwise they just disappear immediately!!!

OH always likes something in the afternoon with a cup of tea but I try not to make an afternoon snack a regular habit. Occasionally a slice of homemade fruit cake or a ginger biscuit. Soreen is nice with a smearing of butter but I don't tend to buy very often as it is too tempting to have more than one slice.

I eat loads of fruit.2 mangos,21 kiwis,7 bananas,2 grape punnets,4 oranges,3 lemons,12 tomatoes and whatever are reduced at the supermarkets e.g. grab your half price cherries now-every week.
I love all fruit and mix it up occasionally. It is really good for the constipation and the complexion.

I don’t snack. But I like nuts ?, all sorts and I will have some now and again.

genie10 Fri 12-Jun-20 14:21:28

Cherries are my go-to as you can just pick up a couple at a time. But a small piece of chocolate every now and then is not too unhealthy!

At the start of lockdown I stocked up on boxes of delicious Medjoul dates. After eating one I keep the stone in my mouth for a while. This helps me resist another for a few minutes longer!

If I thought I wanted to snack out of boredom rather than hunger I would either drink a full glass of water, as often thirst is mistaken for hunger, or do something to occupy myself for distraction from food.

I would also try to eat healthy portions of either fruit or nuts during the day between meals if the munchies take hold.

I try not to eat too many sweet things but on the occasions I really do fancy tea and biscuits I find it's best to take a couple of biscuits out of the packet, seal the packet tightly and put out of the way at the top of the cupboard. This way when I sit down with a cup of tea and I finish the biscuits allowed I will think twice and be less tempted for more than if the biscuit packet was right beside me as I know I would continue to dunk, lol, if the packet was next to me.

I have to have, and a enjoy, a big dollop of butter on my malt loaf. I had never thought of putting banana on it but there are a few on here that enjoy that and I'm tempted now so I'm definitely going to try mashed banana on next time but I'll skip the honey.

I tend to think individually portioned items are more expensive and wouldn't likely stop me from eating more. They have there uses for packed lunches etc where ease of transport is needed.

I do try not to snack at all, but if I do, I make sure it's something like a few unsalted nuts, or a piece of fruit. In hot weather, home made fruit (no sugar) ice lollies are great and seem to fill a gap, even though mainly water. I haven't had Soreen for years, but now you've reminded me of it, I'll give it a try. I usually make my own fruit loaf.

I tend to get peckish mid afternoon so I usually have a handful of nuts and if I’m craving some sweetness I mix with few dried cranberries or have 1 or 2 dates with my afternoon cup of tea. Yum!

Echame Fri 12-Jun-20 11:46:09

Bit of a weird combo I know but I top a delicious slice of Soreen with a chopped date and honey mix..it seems to work really well and isn't over calorific either. It's a sweet treat that isn't too naughty and has lots of added health benefits too!

My favourite and filling snack is definitely a rice cake or two spread with marmite and topped with a sprinkling of grated cheese. Otherwise a sliced pink lady apple dipped in peanut or cashew butter.

I keep a bag of shelled brazil nuts on the side next to me, so when I feel peckish I can have something healthy to snack on.

inishowen Fri 12-Jun-20 11:23:39

There used to be an advert with the slogan "tea is too wet without a biscuit". I'm afraid I cant drink tea without something sweet. A cupasoup is satisfying and you dont need anything to go with it.

I really enjoy raw mini peppers and cherry tomatoes. Also slice some strawberries and use as a topping on oatcake.

dondons1 Fri 12-Jun-20 11:17:56

I love to have flavoured popcorn. Quick and easy to make, popcorn is a budget-friendly snack that should not be reserved for film nights or the cinema. I love adding flavours too - sometimes savoury with herbs or spices but, on special occasions, I might indulge in cocoa coated popcorn!

I would definitely recommend stocking up on popping corn - a little goes a really long way!

obag Fri 12-Jun-20 10:41:18

I don't really snack unless you count fruit, I do however eat 4 Brazil nuts everyday.

glenka Fri 12-Jun-20 10:41:12

I don't snack between meals but if I did it would be something healthy like fruit.

moleswife Fri 12-Jun-20 10:40:29

A small bowl of plain yogurt with a handful of muesli or fresh fruit does the trick. Funnily I bought a Doreen last week not having had one for a year or two - and boy was it tasty and filled the gap perfectly!!!

Ranworth1 Fri 12-Jun-20 10:37:47

Ryvita with marmite!

libra10 Fri 12-Jun-20 10:30:38

I always have a selection of chopped up fruits in the fridge, ready to nibble. Currently we have home grown strawberries, which are luscious. Can't wait for our cherry tomatoes to ripen, as they're great for snacking.

Soreen has been a family favourite since I was a child, and our family still enjoy today.

gulliver12 Fri 12-Jun-20 10:24:52

Grapes, cherries, dates and dried fruit but even these in excess break the calorie bank.

Carooline Fri 12-Jun-20 10:15:06

Split a wholemeal pitta bread apart then cut both sides into fingers. Pop onto a baking tray and put into a hot oven for 10 minutes or so.
They will be lovely and crisp, have with a tomato salsa dip or hummous. Absolutely yummy and totally sin free ❤️

stehol Fri 12-Jun-20 10:15:06

I snack on nuts, seeds, fruit & seeds. I try to vary what I have each day which seems to satisfy my snack cravings

Maggiemaybe Fri 12-Jun-20 10:11:21

The easiest way for me to keep away from unhealthy snacks is not to buy or make them. I do feel embarrassed about not being able to offer visitors a biscuit or cake, but we don’t normally have them in the house.

Cambia Fri 12-Jun-20 10:06:25

If I need to shed a few pounds, I do intermittent fasting for five days a week. (Only eat between 12pm and 8pm) . Any snacks are then lessened a bit! I do like Soreen but only with butter and I also like a mini Snicker (unhealthy) or a piece of fruit (healthy). Oh and cake, I love cake!
