It’s natural to wonder about what the world might look like in the future, particularly for our loved ones. Sometimes this can be a worrying prospect but it’s comforting to know there are things we can do now to help our family members thrive in the future, whether it’s creating a safe home for them, instilling the life lessons we’ve learnt in our grandchildren, or leaving gifts and donations to charity. With this in mind, Cancer Research UK would like to hear your hopes for the future generations of your family.

Here’s what Cancer Research UK has to say: “A Will is one of the most important documents you’ll ever write. It’s the only way to make sure the people and the causes you care about are looked after, and it’s where you can decide what happens to your money and possessions. Once your family and friends are taken care of, a gift to Cancer Research UK – no matter how big or small – really makes a difference for future generations.

Thanks to our amazing supporters, Gifts in Wills fund over a third of our life-saving work, helping us to make treatments even more effective for future generations, bringing forward the day when nobody fears the disease.”

What advice do you give to your grandchildren about how to achieve their hopes and dreams? How do you hope the world will be for future generations and what steps do you take now to help achieve this? Have you thought about writing a Will? Would you consider leaving a gift in your Will to Cancer Research UK to ensure your family grow up in a world where more people survive cancer?

All who post on this thread will be entered into a prize draw taking place on 22/02, where one lucky Gransnetter will win a £200 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Vouchers of winner's choice will be an e-voucher ordered via the Voucher Express platform. Choice will be dependent on availability at the time. Winners will also have an option to select a 'VEX Gift Certificate" which will give them the option to select a physical voucher or gift card from the full Voucher Express range.

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

Make a simple and fair will for children and trust them to make the best use of it.

Direne3 Tue 02-Feb-21 12:08:50

For all of my family, I would wish for the happiness and good health that money cannot buy.

wallers5 Tue 02-Feb-21 12:10:51

That this Covid year won’t take a toll on the children’s education & hopes.

Amystar Tue 02-Feb-21 12:13:53

I hope that in the future my grandchildren will be in happy and treat others as they would like to be treated smile

moleswife Tue 02-Feb-21 12:14:05

I hope they will have all they opportunities that, along with their own efforts, will give them a successful and happy life in whatever field they choose to enter; that doors will stop being closed to those who, in the eyes of many, just don't fit in.

To my 4 very different grandchildren;
Be kind.
Be open minded
Listen to others, talk less.
Love yourself, you are very special
Say yes more often than you say no
Try something new every day/week
Saying thank you matters
You are loved, even when you think you’re not
Learn how to be independent
Smile at strangers
Clearing your home of clutter also clears the mind, it’s true!
Learn to enjoy your own company.
Make friends from all walks of life, not just your walk of life
Personal presentation is important to your confidence, be the best you can within your budgets.
Work to live, don’t live to work.
There is no perfect human being, so stop trying, just be you
Friendship, respect and humour is the recipe for love, sex is just the cherry on the top.
Make your own decisions, some will be right, many will be wrong, take responsibility for both, it’s how we learn and grow.
Try not to judge others until you know all the facts.
Always look at the positives before the negatives, people like positive people.
Remember your opinion is just yours, others opinions are just as important, so listen and you may learn something new
Enough money is important to live a happy content life, being rich isn’t important, and comes with huge responsibility.

I know it sounds daft to a lot of people but I pray every night that no-one harms, hurts my Grandchildren and that they lead a fulfilled life where they are happy,
I will tell my Grandchildren the same as I told my children that if they want to do something just do it and do not be put off with what other people say. You can do anything if you put your mind to it but along the way treat people with respect and they will give respect back.

Gillyanne Tue 02-Feb-21 12:55:38

I would say be kind, laugh often and tell those you love that you do love them, take nothing for granted and always follow your dreams , don't live your life and feel 'if only' and lastly don't worry about what others think just live a good life .

Noreen3 Tue 02-Feb-21 12:56:32

the times we are living in will be history to future generations.I hope they don't have to live through a pandemic,we never thought that we would. But I hope that people will have learned some lessons from it,and appreciate what they have. I hope that a cure can be found for cancer,so that future generations don't have to lose loved ones to it.I hope that, when my granddaughter grows up, there won't be the trolls on social media, and people can just be themselves, and not have to fit an ideal image.I also hope that people continue to get out and enjoy nature, that's one good thing that lockdown has taught us.

molly1977 Tue 02-Feb-21 12:58:17

I hope for a healthy and better future for everyone this year.We need to think about protecting the planet for our children, granchildren and future generations

Nongranny Tue 02-Feb-21 13:05:35

I would wish my grandchildren to have happiness, health and loving kindness to others.
To accept that bad things happen, and to rise above them
To hope for the best at all times, but plan for the worst.
To give, not to receive but because thats the right thing to do.
But above all continue to be the loving, funny, gorgoeus human beings they already are.

tinytina Tue 02-Feb-21 13:16:54

To have a happy and healthy life and to fulfill their dreams. Always look forward, have no regrets and never give up. You can be whatever you want to be but it does take effort, determination and sometimes a little bit of luck. If you expect nothing, you won’t be disappointed.

inishowen Tue 02-Feb-21 13:55:55

Be kind. Look after the environment. Find a career you love, even if you could earn more elsewhere.

Cs783 Tue 02-Feb-21 14:05:33

1. Good things come in threes

2. Troubles come in threes

3. Remember what I said about threes?

i hope for science to to develop medicines to eliminate the evil cancers and viruses that spread around our planet.
i wish that we could all work together to feed everyone in this world, why should some people have an abundance of wealth and food when others starve. there's enough resources for every one on this earth.
i know we need to explore and find answers for the future. but why spend billions on travel to mars, when we should use this to secure our planets future for the generations t come.

LIVE IN HARMONY WITH EVERYONE AND NATURE

StKilda Tue 02-Feb-21 14:32:50

To be able to lie under an apple tree in an orchard with a true love with the sun dappling down on them as they giggle and fall deeper in love instead of relying on a zoom call.

Ranworth1 Tue 02-Feb-21 14:39:08

Look for the good in everyone - we all have it, but it may be easier to see in some more than others.

stoolballgirl Tue 02-Feb-21 14:39:53

Be healthy and happy and kind to other people, animals an our planet

Dearknees1 Tue 02-Feb-21 14:47:41

Always remember that you as an individual have rights but with rights come responsibilities to other people in your family, community, country and the world.

MichStew Tue 02-Feb-21 14:56:17

For now, because they are around 5 and 3 years old (and because we only see them infrequently and then by Zoom at the moment) I have not got round to giving advice to our grandchildren.

When I do it might well be something along the lines of "be true to yourself and your beliefs, provided you can justify holding them and be certain that they do not produce damaging consequences for others".

I would hope that there is a viable planet on which future generations can live in peace and co-operation with the rest of the world.

My wife an I have "mirror" wills in which Cancer Research UK are potential beneficiaries. In the meantime we support them with monthly donations by direct debit and occasional "top-ups" when we feel moved to do so.

Rowsie Tue 02-Feb-21 14:56:57

I want my grandsons to have confidence. I think that if you have confidence you can do anything you want to. I also, of course, want them to be happy and to be satisfied with their lives.

dahlia08 Tue 02-Feb-21 15:15:57

To be kind to others, respect other people and belongings. Respect climate change and don’t waste.

lynndibb Tue 02-Feb-21 15:20:01

For my Granddaughter to be kind and thoughtful. Also to enjoy life.

Secondwind Tue 02-Feb-21 15:26:45

A little certainty, some hope and just to be able to do things spontaneously again.
