Whether you walk every day, you’re a keen cyclist, or passionate about running, we all know how important it is to get outside in the open air, especially during lockdown. But if you suffer from joint pain it can be hard to motivate yourself to stay active. With this in mind, ]] would like to hear your tips for managing joint pain, particularly during winter.

Here’s what ]] has to say:

"GOPO® Joint Health is committed to helping the Nation feel limber at any age, and encourages a healthy and active lifestyle all year round. GOPO® Joint Health is a health food supplement range that contains 100% specially cultivated natural rosehip with a high level of the galactolipid compound known as GOPO®. It is rich in Vitamin C which contributes to the formation of collagen for the normal function of cartilage, the protective and connective component of joints. The newest addition to the range is GOPO® Joint Health Plus Ginger, which is the first UK supplement that combines active GOPO®-containing rosehip - which may play a valuable role in the care of joints and joint tissues - with extracts of the plant-based nutraceutical, Ginger, loaded with nutrients and bioactive compounds that may help support good joint health and muscle function. Seize the day with GOPO® Joint Health, and don’t let the cold weather hold you back from embracing the freedom of movement."

Are you prone to experiencing painful joints in the colder months? Perhaps you have a go-to exercise routine that helps you with your aches and pains? Do you swear by a particular vitamin or supplement? Or maybe you have a secret remedy that keeps you out and about?

Whatever they may be, we’d love to hear your secrets to managing a winter joint pain flare up.

All who post on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky GNer will win a £200 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Build up muscle and bone strength through exercise.

I have Osteoarthritis and recovering from a fall on my buttocks resulting in a back injury.. I do take naproxen and a host of other supplements but am going to try Turmeric as it seems to help others. Staying positive and breathing properly helps, I also do simple stretches and strength exercises but try not to overdo it at the moment. I went on a Keto diet last year which has helped loose weight and feel better, together with Intermittent Fasting - this allows the body to get rid of bad cells and repair itself, also vastly decreased my Alcohol consumption. Seeing and playing with my little Grandkids keeps me smiling too !!!

Drinking more water, a while ago I read that water stimulates the production of synovial fluid (in charge of lubricating the cartilage), and reduces inflammation around the joints. Water also encourages the growth of new cells in the cartilage tissues. Drinking enough water intake can also support circulation and the immune system. I decided to test this theory, I don't like drinking water but I have got used to it and there is a definite improvement in joint pain and my health generally.

I tend to wear more layers of clothes to keep warm, take my medication like clockwork, and do some exercise in the house, spend time in the garden and watching the birds feed, keep myself busy.

I've tried to keep to a regular regime of fruit and fibre in the morning, coupled with multi vitamins which seems to work for me

Yolostela Wed 10-Feb-21 08:27:41

Turmeric and black pepper on my home made granola, plenty of fruit. A multi Vitamin pill.
Daily walk with the dog.
Keep moving.

Keep moving, even if it's just a bit

wilsonj Wed 10-Feb-21 09:33:43

I do a couple of stretching exercises before I get up, then more once I am up. I started yoga classes this year and I have found it helpful, it's a bit of a challenge but worthwhile. I wear wrist warmers indoors and keep warm.

I can't be without my electric blanket, my body hot water bottles, V shaped pillow and warm blankets and a hot chocolate laced with liquor!

I have daily hot baths showers and since the lockdown I have been following Katya on youtube. I've been stretching daily for some time but Katya has some wonderful gentle stretches to follow. I notice that if I don't do them for a day or two that the pain and discomfort increases so it's part of my daily schedule now. It's become very enjoyable too.

I've recently discovered CBD oil which has helped so much. Also gentle walks with my rescue pooches.

I have spondylosis of the upper and lower spine which causes medium to severe pain in my neck and lower back. I always follow the advice of my Physio-therapist, and I do exercises specific to the areas of my body where I experience pain on a daily basis. I also find that Volterol Gel is quite effective when the pain gets too bad. Finally, (for those that can afford it) I would advise that you give full spectrum CBD a try as it works really well at easing my back and neck pain, and I also sleep better whenever I use it. The best thing I have tried is New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel capsules. Two a day really helps to keep the joints moving . . . that, and dancing when I get the chance!

A little bit of yoga every day, even if 10 minutes keeps everything supple and pain at bay

mbody Wed 10-Feb-21 11:58:32

Move as much as possible and if particularly bad two paracetamol followed by two ibuprofen.

Becks43 Wed 10-Feb-21 12:38:25

I find Turmeric really useful and I also have a TENS machine that does help the majority of the time. I also try and do some gentle yoga, every other day.

lizd31 Wed 10-Feb-21 13:32:43

I take liposomal curcumin for my inflammation & CBD oil with Turmeric. I use magnet therapy which helps with my muscle & skin tissue pain &, as I struggle to exercise, I use a vibration plate trainer which tones my muscles & helps ease the pain

marionc59 Wed 10-Feb-21 17:04:18

Having a good long soak in a bath with Magnesium Sulphate crystals for at least 20 mins is a great help Also, heat pads and some gentle pilates makes my Polymyalgia Rheumatica bearable.

LucyW Wed 10-Feb-21 17:34:47

I have osteoarthritis in one hip and one knee. The knee has been extremely painful when I am in bed recently. I find rubbing olbas oil in heats the area up and allows me to get to sleep. My house is very cold as it has high ceilings and is largely open plan but my heated blanket is great and a hot water bottle also helps. I have just ordered turmeric and black pepper tablets as I am loathe to take painkillers every day. Don't know if this cold weather affects my knee more as I can still get odd achey days in the summer.

Silverdarling Wed 10-Feb-21 18:11:53

Yoga stretches in the morning seem to waken up the joints and keep everything oiled.

simbee1 Wed 10-Feb-21 19:01:41

The key is to keep moving as much as possible so I have knee supports that were specially recommended by a personal trainer so support me knees on bad days so I can still exercise safely.

carowood Wed 10-Feb-21 19:35:46

Definitely keep moving and stay warm inside and out.
Eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of water.

essexgirlSE Wed 10-Feb-21 20:14:07

I have a degenerative back condition and my friend gave me a brilliant tip. Between spells of being up and doing, have a heated blanket on the back of your chair and sit with your back against it. This has made such a difference to how much I can achieve.

cake17uk Wed 10-Feb-21 21:05:03

I take turmeric supplements, and use a pain-relieving gel for when my hips are really painful
