Whether you walk every day, you’re a keen cyclist, or passionate about running, we all know how important it is to get outside in the open air, especially during lockdown. But if you suffer from joint pain it can be hard to motivate yourself to stay active. With this in mind, ]] would like to hear your tips for managing joint pain, particularly during winter.

Here’s what ]] has to say:

"GOPO® Joint Health is committed to helping the Nation feel limber at any age, and encourages a healthy and active lifestyle all year round. GOPO® Joint Health is a health food supplement range that contains 100% specially cultivated natural rosehip with a high level of the galactolipid compound known as GOPO®. It is rich in Vitamin C which contributes to the formation of collagen for the normal function of cartilage, the protective and connective component of joints. The newest addition to the range is GOPO® Joint Health Plus Ginger, which is the first UK supplement that combines active GOPO®-containing rosehip - which may play a valuable role in the care of joints and joint tissues - with extracts of the plant-based nutraceutical, Ginger, loaded with nutrients and bioactive compounds that may help support good joint health and muscle function. Seize the day with GOPO® Joint Health, and don’t let the cold weather hold you back from embracing the freedom of movement."

Are you prone to experiencing painful joints in the colder months? Perhaps you have a go-to exercise routine that helps you with your aches and pains? Do you swear by a particular vitamin or supplement? Or maybe you have a secret remedy that keeps you out and about?

Whatever they may be, we’d love to hear your secrets to managing a winter joint pain flare up.

All who post on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky GNer will win a £200 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Fish oils help me to keep as flexible as possible. Keeps the creaking at bay.

Magnesium tablets and turmeric helps. Hot baths and daily walks are all the things that help me

I find avoiding draughts the best thing for me and making sure that even on a good day I don't overdo it. Every morning I stretch gently first thing as that helps greatly and make sure that I don't stay in the same position for too long.

I find I am less stiff and can get my joints to cooperate more quickly if I keep myself warm. I have a thick blanket in addition to my duvet and (although there is a cost implication) I make sure the heating is set to warm the house before I get up.
Cold and damp is definitely the enemy.

I have a chronic illness (Elhers danlos syndrome) and so my joints hurt daily but is worse in the winter. I have a heat pad, blankets and my pain killers. I'd like to try the supplements to see if they help my poor joints!

Another turmeric user here, usually in the form of golden paste.

keep warm by wearing extra clothing, wear warm gloves when sleeping ( better use two pairs, one inside the other). Also wear a woolly hat when sleeping, reducing heat loss and more comfortable.. Wear warm socks when sleeping. Hands, head, feet end points keep them warm.

A spoonful of turmeric in a milky drink and regular exercise

Diet is the key to my aches & pains! No dairy or alcohol but hell why live a life without my favourite things so everything in moderation and then I can control it ???

purpleclaire17 Thu 11-Feb-21 08:07:02

I do a lot of walking and swim twice a week, when the pools are open!

Yoga for mobility plus keep warm

BGB31 Thu 11-Feb-21 10:31:56

Yoga is brilliant for getting or keeping supple. There are lots of online resources for lockdown times. I have found a live class that I enjoy at least once a week.

But yoga is not for everyone so just moving as much as possible, walking, stretching etc is really important as we get older.

I take a multivitamin and curcumin tablet every day and also a probiotic drink as I'm a firm believer that gut health plays an important factor in overall wellbeing.

With the early onset of Psoriatic Arthritis I've regained my resolve and started losing weight. I now take a high strength collagen liquid supplement, turmeric and high dose Omega 3 daily along with my multivitamin. I'm just trying to take care of myself the best I possibly can to hopefully have a long and mobile life X

I have severe RA and have to wear pain killing patches, as nothing else hits the pain. Heat is the thing that helps me. A hot bath or shower and I also have a heated shoulder blanket, recommended on GN a few years ago.

Mind over matter

SuzC Thu 11-Feb-21 16:54:06

I take fish oil, whether it really makes that much difference I don't know, but I'm not willing to stop.
I make sure I walk every day, wrapped up really warm in the winter with heat packs in my gloves.
Gentle stretching every day and pilates a couple of times a week.

shaddai88 Thu 11-Feb-21 17:42:55

I find walking , daily exercise and making sure I have fresh ginger and turmeric warm water helps to keep my chronic pain at bay. I use hot water bottle and Tiger balm gel to relieve the pain when I run out of fresh ginger and turmeric.

Nutty1 Thu 11-Feb-21 18:36:03

I take high dose Glucosamine & Chondroitin which I find very helpful and also I spend 8 minutes in the morning on the Five Tibetan Rites which give relief from pain and stiffness, increase energy and are believed to help you live a long and healthy life, whilst balancing the chakras and reversing the ageing process. What's not to like? The postures are available on You-Tube!

Unfortunately, some of the natural remedies interact with medication and can't be taken. I would be willing to give them a go, but have been told under no circumstances take them, as they can contraindicate with prescribed medication.

For autoimmune diseases, practising mind over matter doesn't really work, I'm afraid. sad. If only it was that simple.
There are strategies to help cope with the excrutiating pain and chronic fatigue, but in my case, they hardly impact on the pain.

Marydoll Thu 11-Feb-21 19:40:56

I meant to add, despite initially being sceptical, I did get some benefit from Reiki. I could feel the pain subsiding, almost immediately.

hopezibah Thu 11-Feb-21 22:00:03

I notice a difference when the weather turns icy and cold and my pain in my back and hips get worse. Gentle stretching and mobilisation exercises in the morning help - making no sudden movements. Supplements are also great - I take a whole host of them...GOPO included as well as glucosamine and chondroitin, omega oil, etc. When covid isn't an issue, regular trips to the chiropractor helps me (mctimony chiropractor) and I had just begun assupuncture before covid struck so would be prepared to give that another try when it is safe to do so to see if that helps.

dhew41 Thu 11-Feb-21 23:25:06

Keeping active with local walks, even if for a mile, ensuring that appropriate clothing is worn. I am especially careful of keeping my knees warm.
Pilates has been a wonder discovery for me - keeps me supple

Loobs Fri 12-Feb-21 11:03:11

I take Turmeric (as someone else has stated) but I make my own turmeric paste and take it three times a day. It's made from turmeric powder, pepper and coconut oil - pretty disgusting to take but I have recently discovered I can take it mixed in orange juice and the taste is disguised. It works wonders for my joint pain.

MayBee70 Fri 12-Feb-21 14:52:01

I mix it with honey which I think reduces it’s efficacy but I’m happy to take that risk.
