English Soccer - Fabio - Terry - Rednapp - What ARE they like?

Am I being unreasonable to think all this is an embarrassment to the English?
Captain of England in trouble - Fabio (and presumably Terry himself) fails to "get" that he needs to step aside until name cleared. hmm Then Fabio, continuing with the theme of not "getting" normal professional behaviour comes out in public to disagree with decision... hmm
Maybe the FA glad to see him go?
And then there is Harry R, getting off his tax charge. Boasting that he does not understand computers or money or even emails and immediately the British press hail him as the hero that will save the England team? hmm
So glad I am a Welsh Rugby supporter and not an English football supporter. grin

Might discourage the others coming up with creative accounting ideas to delay paying £££millions in tax...
They get treated differently to other businesses when they go bust - the priority creditors are other clubs not the exchequer! shock

How fantastic it would be to see the clubs find that level where their fans can enjoy a family trip to the match, for a reasonable price, and to be able to treat their children to a replica kit that isn't renewed every season at astronomical prices. Football playes get paid monopoly money and they think they are unimpeachable. It's time to get back to reality, as kitty says. Some pride in their talent, instead of arrogance about what they can get away with, has been long awaited.

Am I the only person who thinks that big football clubs, like Rangers, being declared bankrupt can only be good for the game in general? Sad that people are losing their jobs but there might be financial reality brought to bear if it happens to a few clubs.

I don't hate it (though i might if anyone in this house wanted it on the telly) but I just don't understand the fascination... It is as exciting as watching someone read a book. I can understand that they are enjoying it... but why would i want to watch.

Anne58 Tue 14-Feb-12 20:04:53

Forgive shouty type, but I HATE FOOTBALL

Thank you, as you were. (You can take your ear plugs out now.)

Crikey... INSIGNIFICANCE..... sorry

Oldgreymare Tue 14-Feb-12 18:36:14

As if.....
Golf cart 'incident' pales into significance ...... or am I biased?
Saint Harry.... says he can't 'do sums' hope he's not completely dyscalculic 'else he'll have probs with numbers on shirts, formations ( ah but the latter only involves single numbers so he should be O.K.) etc.

JessM Tue 14-Feb-12 18:10:28

not alluding to events at the Millennium last Sunday are you?
And as for some of the recent embarrassments in NZ...well, shameful.
(Although i do remember a not too distant embarrassment of our own involving golf cart and the M4...
I kind of got the impression that the press were out to canonise rednapp precisely because he had managed to avoid being found guilty...

Oldgreymare Tue 14-Feb-12 17:21:01

Jess.... I know this should be about footy, but I can't not say a big YEEEESSS! (You know what I mean!)
Seems like a bit of a football fix to me (allegedly.... must be careful!) one day Harry is innocent of fraud or whatever, the next day he is being suggested as England manager! HRMPH!

Anne58 Fri 10-Feb-12 21:31:02

If the Fabio bloke is who I think he is, I want to know who's covering his round in Greendale!

gracesmum Fri 10-Feb-12 21:22:57

seventimesfive - Andy Murray IS still young! grin as are that nice Djokovic, that nice Roger Federer and that whipper-snapper John McEnroegrin

Notsogrand Fri 10-Feb-12 20:54:33

Oh dear! I thought that the grin after my post would indicate that it wasn't to be taken too seriously!

I know of course, that being a good player doesn't mean you'd be a good manager!

I like football. I don't support any particular club, but I keenly follow the International matches. (Ditto cricket & rugby)

As to the national 'obsession' with it, well, it is after all the national game. I agree that the money earned by footballers is way over the top. Same goes for golfers, top flight tennis players, etc etc.

As to footballers earning more than surgeons, well so do bankers and they're not nearly as entertaining. (If you like football that is!)

JessM Fri 10-Feb-12 20:34:13

A lot more than surgeons.
Becks is a man of beauty and footballing skill but that is neither here nor there when it comes to managing.
Apparently there are currently no black managers in top level football. Despite a significant number of players being black. (there used to be one round here called Inns Ince or something...). hmm again

Seventimesfive Fri 10-Feb-12 20:32:40

I hadn't watched tennis for years, what with family and work, and then when I retired 8 years ago I went to Sydney to stay with my DD3 for 3 months over Xmas/New Year. The Australian Open was being shown on huge screens in front of the Opera House and I spent hours sitting on the steps watching. It was magical in such great surroundings and I have been following it ever since. Andy Murray was very young then and it has been interesting to watch him grow and develop. Maybe this year...?

Anne58 Fri 10-Feb-12 20:27:25

Notsogrand to be really blunt, I don't give a flying f**k if we win or not, the "national" obsession with the damn game is, in my opinion completely over the top, and as to the amount of money the players are paid, well, that is obscene.

With regard to your comment about Beckham being manager, having a skill at something doesn't necessarily mean that you make a suitable team leader/manager etc. I know many people that are brilliant at what they do, but lack the communication or leadership skills to actually drive others to success.

Some footballers get paid more than top level surgeons, disgusting.

Annobel Fri 10-Feb-12 20:24:12

I love Wimbledon and the Six Nations. If terrestrial TV ever loses these to Sky, as cricket has been lost, I shall default on my licence in protest - though I might, by that time, be past the magic age of 75!
