Starting this thread for us to follow the Olympic flame around Britain. How many GN's will be going see it as it passes them.

Seeing the Olympic torch start it's journey around Britain this morning has cheered us up no end. Can't wait for it to arrive near us, early June I think, but we will have to be up very early to get the bus to the nearest town.

We are not until the last day of the journey here in Surrey..will let you know if I get a glimpse!

glassortwo Sat 19-May-12 09:07:23

It arrives just a few miles from us at lunch time on the 16th June and we will be going down with the GC to see them going through. It had all gone past me without much interest but seeing them set off this morning I feel quite excited.

Going today to see it and also singing at the town centre with my choir !

susiecb Sat 19-May-12 10:08:36

Oh dear words fail me what a bloody circus and waste of money!

fieldwake Sat 19-May-12 10:28:35

I agree about the money. Flame is magic the only positive thing, fire one of our 5 elements but can be done by anyone anywhere not as you say this huge expense. I don't know where money is coming from but expect I will feel hot when I find out!

pompa Sat 19-May-12 10:44:10

The money has already been spent, and spending money makes jobs for people, so sit back, or better still, get out there and enjoy the circus.

pompa Sat 19-May-12 10:54:34

Divawithattitude please share your day with us, sure it will be memorable. has an GN'er been to the Jubilee event today ?.

MrsJamJam Sat 19-May-12 10:56:52

Getting up horribly early on Monday morning to go and see it pass through our nearest town. Don't expect to be overwhelmed, but its an experience. This is not my year for becoming a grumpy old woman!

fieldwake Sat 19-May-12 10:57:55

Thanks, spent well no doubt it could have been put to much better use and still made jobs? Yes I decided might as well join in, we are doing 'synchronised swimming carrying WI torch thro' village on a farmers lorry/float. It has been fun so far and entertainment for the village and holding up traffic! Just hope we don't slip off going up castle hill.

Watching the Queen atm. It's these moments that make me proud to be British, our troops fight for our freedom in the worst parts of the world, then present us with such a wonderful spectacle in front of Her Majesty. Fantastic scenes.

susiecb Sat 19-May-12 11:03:54

pompa I have never enjoyed a circus and I dont intend to start now so quit the bullying tone!

pompa Sat 19-May-12 11:15:45

Not sure why you think my tone is bullying, I started this thread for those interested in the Olympics wishing to share their experiences, some will, some will not.
There is another thread discussing the rights and wrongs of the Olympics etc.

Anagram Sat 19-May-12 11:17:22

Well said, pompa!

susiecb Sat 19-May-12 11:32:49

because you said ' get out there and enjoy the circus'. That is a bullying tone and I promised myself after leaving work I would never be bullyed again!

kittylester Sat 19-May-12 11:37:46

The flame will be passing my husband's childhood home so he hopes to go and stand on the pavement outside to see it. It will also be passing through a small village near to where we live now so I intend to go and try to see it there. I feel it is a once in lifetime event so I intend to be there.

We didn't try for Olympic tickets as the view is much better on the TV and the thought of battling through all the crowds is too much to contemplate.

pompa well said! Surely this is a thread for people who are interested in the Flame's journey. smile

susiecb Sat 19-May-12 11:44:58

Sorry I didnt realise you had exclusive rights.

pompa Sat 19-May-12 11:46:11

I apologise if that's the way it came across, the remark was not specifically aimed at you and not intended to be bullying.
You miss quoted me, I said "so sit back, or better still, get out there and enjoy the circus". Meaning, if you don't like it sit back and ignore it, or if you do like it, get out there and enjoy it.

pompa Sat 19-May-12 11:49:42

We did get tickets for the Olympic judo (my old sport). We were worried about getting there, but found out they were operating a park & ride scheme which makes it very easy to get there, and for a change, reasonably priced.

fieldwake Sat 19-May-12 12:27:57

thanks for route pompa. I am about halfway between 2 cities bit far to go.

soop Sat 19-May-12 12:36:41

Those who like such events will no doubt have a super-duper time. That's fine with me. I'm one of the rather be doing something other than folk. I shall sit in the sunshine - enjoy the peace of the garden with a brew and cupcake and watch the sea lap the shore. Each to his/her own. Go with the flow. Live and let live...and all that jazz. smile

jeni Sat 19-May-12 12:43:10

My concern is that it's going to make me late for work as they are closing the flame route on Bristol. That just happens to be my route to work! [grumpy]

pompa Sat 19-May-12 12:44:23

@fieldwake, the torch should pass within 10 miles of 95% of the population. You do need to zoom in on the map to see the smaller places and rural areas it will be passing through. If you are one of the 5% it misses, you must live in a very peaceful part of the country, lucky you.
