Every 2 years I deck the car with England flags for either the World Cup or Euros. This year, I have England wing mirror covers too. The flags are not usually on for long, but I never give up hope of a 1966 repeat performance.

First England match just about to kick off, but it's being Sky-plussed to watch later as grandsons are here for tea.

So I'll now have to steeer clear of GN, Twitter, Facebook, News etc smile

Come on England!!

I just don't think that we have players of the calibre of Owen, Beckham and Shearer these days. Gerrard hardly got a mention tonight. Beckham in particular used to work so hard to create goals for other people, as well as scoring himself. Oh well; at least we won't have the humiliation of losing to the Germans again smile.

Always look on the bright side crimson grin

Well for someone who profeses not to like the game, I have been brought up on it (almost), so do have some views. I think the new manager appears to be a quiet go-getter, and I can actually understand what he says. The captain likewise, but Wayne Rooney - WHO IS HE AND WHERE WAS HE LAST NIGHT!
Thank goodness I don't have to listen to any more of that - and I am going to be bored to tears by tennis (I am a right old misery, really!), but I do love cricket and of course bowls.

Watched the match last night and found it hugely exciting towards the end. I thought our team were heroes; they gave it everything they had even though Italy had them on the back foot from very early on.

Don't know anything about football but I agree Rooney didn't seem to be doing much.

NannaB Mon 25-Jun-12 08:15:12

They played better without Rooney. Still think penalties are not the way to go. Should be golden goal. Have Wimbledon to get dissapointed over now. Come on Andy!

Notsogrand Mon 25-Jun-12 08:19:29

I don't feel too down-hearted. It's a newish team and by 2014 some of the younger ones will have a bit more international experience. Roy Hodgson seems to have promoted a good spirit in the team and although we didn't play brilliantly, we stopped Italy from scoring for 2 hours! smile

Wimbledon. About 3 months ago one of my daughters dreamed that Murray won in 4 sets. A very vivid dream full of detail. On the strength of that, I placed a £5 bet on Murray winning. grin Glutton for punishment!

I love Wimbledon, apart from the grunting girls. Let's hope the tournament brings some summer weather with it. smile

Yet another penalty shoot out. Will England never learn from the past. They are no good in penalty shoot outs. Perhaps they should give up football and play tiddly winks. Of course all our players are paid too much, perhaps they shouldn't get paid until they win a tournament.

Even well-paid sports stars can suffer from the pressure of the occasion. A sports psychologist might be a good recruit to the management.

I watched the game in Italy with my Italian husband, surrounded by neighbours who were watching the game on T.V's outside and cheering loudly every time Italy touched the ball. My DH lived in England for 44years and was cheering both teams on!! I have to suffer more until Italy get knocked out (or win)!!! Oh well there is always Wimbledon to watch.

NewGranLin Tue 26-Jun-12 10:31:57

The way to get better results would be to introduce performance related pay. The whole thing is one big yawn as far as I am concerned. My ex was football obsessed and the sound of a football crowd still makes me feel sick. It's great not to have to watch,

PRINTMISS Tue 26-Jun-12 16:03:21

I agree NewGranLin, these 'players' get astronimical payments - far more than they are worth, and still thinks it's o.k. to 'do well'. They surely get paid to win, that is what all the training is about - not, 'oh! well, next time'.
Football was once a great game, it has now been shamed by the very odd antics of players who score a goal (again is that not what they are paid for?), and the very childish reactions of players who are fined for what is so obviously a foul. Oh, just do not get me started all over again.

crimson Thu 28-Jun-12 23:37:28

Given tonight's result, perhaps we didn't play that badly after all the other night?

Notsogrand Fri 29-Jun-12 06:49:43

I thought the same crimson.

glassortwo Fri 29-Jun-12 11:03:31

I agree, I am relieved that Germany lost, we did well to get as far as we did.

nonnasusie Fri 29-Jun-12 12:57:18

Oh well I shall just have to suffer 1 more match!!

Pete Fri 29-Jun-12 13:09:10

Watching Germany being beaten did soften the blow grin

NannaB Mon 02-Jul-12 08:01:20

What a great finish by Spain to what has been a very watchable tournament.

Notsogrand Mon 02-Jul-12 08:14:47

Spain are in a different class....wonderful football.

crimson Mon 02-Jul-12 12:52:06

Alas, I don't understand enough about football to appreciate how good Spain are; I half watched the game and heard gary Lineker et al eulogising about them, but it all went over my head and I have to admit to finding the game quite boring. Perhaps they play so well because there is such rivalry in Spain and every match they play is like a cup final. It was lovely to see the little children on the pitch afterwards; family values and such like seem more more important to them unlike the WAG and gossip column mentality that football seems to generate over here.

nonnasusie Mon 02-Jul-12 13:59:27

Black armbands here in Italy today!! Secretly I'm glad they lost or they would have been insufferable!!
