Just seen an article about the Closing Ceremony. Now's our chance to plead for our case, namely that it is not ruined by ageing rock stars, wheezing their old hits and displaying their hair dyes!
_Here's my list of the banned_:
*Paul McCartney+
Elton John
Cliff Richard
Brian May
Tom Jones
Kylie
Madonna [as if]
_Exceptions to the above_:
Mick Jagger and the Stones
Shirley Bassey
Elvis Presley grin
Any others for either list?

We recorded it (though we missed the last bit, from the end of the Rio part). I enjoyed some of it, but the truth is, I just don't understand modern pop. Much preferred the opening ceremony, which I loved.

I don't know what it is about modern music - to me it seems tuneless and wailing and wobbly. But so many people DO love it that I guess it's just me. I never grew out of the Beatles, the Stones, and Queen. And a few others of course, but mainly from the 60s and 70s (NOT the 50s - too establishment, staid, and Doris Day)

You didn't upset me either, number. We can't all have the same taste in music - or anything else for that matter! smile

Phew!

specki4eyes Sat 25-Aug-12 22:12:39

You haven't upset me dear 'numberplease' - I just do like to have my little joke. smile

Glad to hear you`re getting better GadaboutGran.
Specki4eyes, Anagram and Crimson, sorry to upset you, Guy Garvey may very well be a lovely man, but I still don`t call him a singer, and I`ve never heard of him or Elbow before, sorry.

Thanks for good wishes. Just had an endoscopy so stone in bile duct removed- apparently uncommon when you don't have a gallbladder. Home tomorrow. Can't believe how assertive I've been & got sorted very quickly. Soon be gadding again! iPhones & Gransnet are life savers in hospital!(predictive text for gransnet was grabs net!)

Oh dear gadabout that must have been a simply dreadful experience. How sad that no one came to your assistance earlier. I wonder how each one of us would have behaved if we came across someone having problems as you did. It seems a strange and unfriendly way of "not wanting to get involved"

Anagram Fri 17-Aug-12 14:01:22

number, I'm sure you liked Elbow's 'First Steps', the Olympic theme tune - who could not? grin

specki4eyes Fri 17-Aug-12 13:47:28

Oh my Gad! Get well soon. flowers

I'd like to think that nice young man who helped you was Guy Garvey of Elbow. He would do that kind of thing. He's lovely - numberplease are you listening? Yes I do try to listen to him on Sunday nights crimson but I'm an hour ahead and its not good for my complexion. His musical taste reminds me of the late lamented John Peel.

I hope you don't all think I'm trying to keep Elbow in our loop? Oh ok then.grin Their next UK concert tour is in November btw. smile

Sorry I'm late responding eGJ. I was on the train to London on Sunday and was suddenly taken ill. Everyone on the train ignored me - I think they thought I was a drunken old woman! I got out & staggered to the help point but was intercepted by a wonderful man with his son. He took me over and organised the ambulance as they couldn't find th estation. He stayed by my side even when I was sick until I was whisked off to hospital. He really had an amzing quality of care. I spent the day in A&E & sleeping but managed to watch half asleep from the sofa. MRI scan etc on Monday.

Did'y'know that Guy does a programme of his favourite music on Radio 6 on Sunday nights [I think]. I'm sorry; I'm becoming a Radio 6 bore, aren't I sad....

That male singer was Guy Garvey of Elbow numberplease and would you like a bunch of fives? He is a GOD amongst men!
Hello nattygran we do violence on here as you've probably noticed.smile

numberplease Wed 15-Aug-12 17:08:16

Who was the male singer(?) who bleated out a mournful sounding dirge all the time the athletes were making their way into the stadium? Made me feel like turning the volume off! Loved the childrens choir signing to Imagine, love that song, and loved Eric Idle`s contribution. All in all though, not a patch on the opening ceremony.
Oh, welcome Nattygran!

jeni Tue 14-Aug-12 20:21:00

Hi nattygran wellcome to the nutters club!smile

Thank you for your welcome. I look forward to joining in some of the topics but some of them look a bit scary. I've started with a safe one....Food.

Ariadne Tue 14-Aug-12 14:59:05

I there, nattygran and welcome!

AlisonMA Tue 14-Aug-12 14:58:41

Welcome Nattygran

DH and DS1 went to the closing ceremony and said it was brilliant. DH is so happy as he said he was at the 2 greatest UK sporting events in his lifetime: the 1966 World Cup and the 2012 Olympic losing ceremony. He is very happy.

Nonu Tue 14-Aug-12 14:34:27

Welcome Nattygran , enjoy !grin

merlotgran Mon 13-Aug-12 23:01:06

Hello nattygran. I think it got a bit much at the end as well. Once I'd seen the sports I'm interested in I just wanted it to finish. I'm really pleased that it all went off so well though. smile
