Here's a new Wimbledon thread or those of us who love the tennis this time of year. Who's your favourite player? For me, it's Roger Federer, but Rafa Nadal comes a close second. smile

Butty Mon 24-Jun-13 18:49:36

I feel for Rafa, but congratulate Darsci.

Have unglued my bottom from the sofa and am off out gardening. A calm and mild early evening. Perfect for it.

Butty Mon 24-Jun-13 18:49:49

Ooops

soop Tue 25-Jun-13 13:14:29

anno Less of the bottom quips! wink

I'm about to claim my seat for today's play. Rory seems to find my lap very comfortable. Need to make a pot of tea so that he's not disturbed too often...hmm

I shall certainly miss Rafa.

This Djokovic and Mayer match is becoming really exciting! I just nipped indoors for a cup of tea and a break from gardening, and now I'm going NOWHERE! grin

annodomini Tue 25-Jun-13 16:47:13

I've been glued to Laura Robson's match. What a winner!

Maniac Tue 25-Jun-13 16:50:02

That was a good match Well done Laura.
Trouble is I keep grazing. What are your favourite nibbles?

nanaej Wed 26-Jun-13 00:31:08

Oh dear I am not a tennis fan at all. Such a waste for someone who has lived the majority of her life within a half hour walk of Wimbledon tennis!

janeainsworth Wed 26-Jun-13 01:07:10

Oh Nanaej..........sad
I'm in the States just now and can't begin to work out how to use son's telly.
But home on Friday and have tickets for Court No2 the second Wednesday, so hoping to see some exciting doubles matches.

nanaej Wed 26-Jun-13 01:10:56

I have only been for a free tour of the place and a visit to the museum & never when tennis was on!

Joan Wed 26-Jun-13 06:25:35

No.

If I were forced to watch it, then it would be my idea of hell.

The sports-watching gene is absent in me. I used to be quite happy to take part in cycling, judo, swimming etc, but watching someone else do it - why?

I also don't watch sex films...

JessM Wed 26-Jun-13 07:12:54

Along with soccer it leaves me cold joan. I can understand why people like reading silently but watching other people do it... If they got paid money to do it, would it make it any more fascinating. hmm

I'm not a tennis fan either and also don't live a million miles from Wimbledon, but then again I grew up a stone's throw from Epsom Downs and never went to the Derby.

I pretty much hate anything to do with balls, which is unfortunate as my husband is an avid golfer. Golf actually makes tennis and football seem exciting and dynamic, at least with these games there is some movement going on, as opposed to someone spending acres of time adjusting their stance just to wack a bloody ball, and then walk for miles to see whether it's gone in, or indeed gone anywhere remotely near a hole, or merely got stuck in a sandpit, more commonly known as a bunker, in which case there's loads of tedious shots trying to get the stupid little white ball out again. Don't get it why would anyone want to spend hours watching that.

When my husband watches one of the couple of big golfing tournaments on tv, I try to be out of the room or be on my laptop with earphones in because there' some old man who does the commentary and it's invariably nauseating. Thank god they are only on about twice a year, (still two too many in my opinion) As they reach their conclusion, allegedly they become exciting, I'm not sure how you would can work this out though. My husband tells me at frequent intervals, even though I don't want to know, "it's all hotting up" I usually respond with "to you and your half a dozen mates maybe, most normal people don't give a toss!" This is not usually well received! The American tournaments are the worst they make the golfers' wives dress in some ghastly corporate uniform and most of them look like Stepford Wives a bit like Tiger Woods' ex, which as we all know now, was a relationship that didn't go at all well, although she did have the satisfaction of setting about his car with his golf clubs!

I'm having a rant so apologies to all golfers out there, I'm off to write a 100 lines "I must be more tolerant about spectator sport, particularly golf!"

Shock horror - Sharapova has called out her trainer. Laryngitis, perhaps? grin
Poor old Jo-Wilfried, sorry to see him go.

Tegan Wed 26-Jun-13 17:38:33

Every time I get back home another player is out with an injury. I'm am wondering if it's right for players to play in conditions where they're slipping all the time? Especially when a lot of the older players [by that I mean 23/24 confused] are nursing injuries anyway.

JessM Wed 26-Jun-13 17:47:59

That Joannna Lumley advert for BBC iplayer is rather good I think. I tried it for the first time yesterday and the quality of the transmission is fantastic.
A good solution for those married to sports addicts who cannot share the interest.

shysal Wed 26-Jun-13 18:50:52

Glad I won't have to watch Rafa adjusting his underwear, but I notice that Andy Murray has started to do the same, but from the front. Surely he should have found a comfortable style by now! And I hope his balls don't fall out!

mollie Wed 26-Jun-13 19:16:56

I'm sorry to see Jo-Wilfred limp out ... such a nice chap! Glad to see Sharapova has gone too though, no more screaming! Can see a lot of debate about the condition of the grass ahead of us. Seems fine to me but what do I know?

annodomini Wed 26-Jun-13 19:37:00

Even better - Victoria Azarenka, who outdoes even Sharapova in decibels, has also gone.

mollie Thu 27-Jun-13 07:40:43

I saw Azarenka's interview, I could hardly make out a word because she spoke so quietly and mumbled...must save her voice for the tennis court!!

Charleygirl Thu 27-Jun-13 08:35:50

Michelle, who beat Maria Sharapova has an even louder voice than Maria if that is possible. To think that people pay a lot of money to listen to those hideous screams. There are rules re the screaming but the umpires etc do not seem to take a blind bit of notice. I can turn down the sound on my TV, the spectators are not so lucky.

Andy does have a chance this year unless some young whipper snapper beats himself and Novak.

Dustin Brown from Germany is sheer raw talent and with a decent coach, he will fly high.

Ella46 Thu 27-Jun-13 09:32:02

Yes, Dustin Brown looks very interesting.

Back to the adjustment of their shorts (sorry to drag it down), wouldn't you think that they would have them tailor made if they can't find comfy ones?
It must distract them if the shorts are uncomfortable!

I really hate to see them fiddling about.

Ella46 Thu 27-Jun-13 09:32:51

grin

gracesmum Thu 27-Jun-13 18:54:31

With so many top players biting the dust (especially in Andy Murray's half of the draw) it has been suggested that somebody might be putting something in their tea!! Is Andy's auntie perhaps the tea lady at the All England Club?? grin

Tegan Thu 27-Jun-13 18:58:08

I thought they were putting something slippy on the ground wink.

merlotgran Thu 27-Jun-13 21:03:39

Oh Dear. Sue Barker's not going to be very pleased with my DH. He reckons she's starting to look like Anne Widdecombe. shock
