Here's a new Wimbledon thread or those of us who love the tennis this time of year. Who's your favourite player? For me, it's Roger Federer, but Rafa Nadal comes a close second. smile

Victoria Beckham? Heck; I'm nearly crying already just seeing that beautiful little girl tossing the coin set me off...

merlotgran Sun 07-Jul-13 13:59:39

Who is the token Royal this year?

nonnasusie Sun 07-Jul-13 13:46:12

I'm probably going to miss most of the final because we were invited to a neighbours confirmation "do" weeks ago and can't politely get out of going even though I'd rather watch the match!!angry

betsysgran Sun 07-Jul-13 13:37:25

Ella46 I quite agree. I find his comments puerile and intrusive. His accent is also EXTREMELY difficult to understand. I also find John McEnroe talks over the play which is very distracting. Keeping fingers, toes and everything else crossed for Andy.

Just seen the intervew with Andy; have realised that the last time I wanted someone/something to win this much was the day Desert Orchid won the Gold Cup.

Ella46 Sun 07-Jul-13 13:16:54

I hope Boris isn't commentating.

Ella46 Sun 07-Jul-13 12:50:30

Yes, I don't really mind if Novak wins, he's a lovely lad too grin

Tegan Sun 07-Jul-13 12:45:10

Either way, the Wimbledon crowd will cheer the winner, as long as he is deservedly so. Is it just me, but I wish people in other countries understood how fair we are here.

whenim64 Sun 07-Jul-13 12:36:09

Ella yes, a long match with lots of peril, powerful serves, gymnastic returns that come from nowhere, set point advanages snatched back, tie breaks, and the spectators and viewers 'ooh-ing' and 'oh no-ing' until we can't take any more! grin tennis

Tegan Sun 07-Jul-13 12:16:23

Did you hear what McEnroe said about Andy yesterday. That when the Polish guy served an unreturnable ball to him at the start of the match, and Andy returned it, he knew he would win. This is a different Andy to the one we've known for the past few years. We're in for an amazing match this afternoon smile. C'mon Andy!

Ella46 Sun 07-Jul-13 12:07:16

I do hope it's a really long match smile
It's so disappointing when you're all geared up for a good fight and then it's over too quickly!

I've done my chores, and sat in the sun for a very hot hour, and now I'm in, cooling down with a brew, and getting excited.

Come on Andy!

soop did you see the documentary on Andy? Very touching and made me weep.

soop Sun 07-Jul-13 11:59:44

I shall sob if Andy wins. I shall sob if Andy loses. I'm such a mixed-up kid. The people of Dumblane must be beyond excited. tennis sunshine grin

Can't sit still now the anticipation is rising for the men's final. I hope it's as momentous as the semis were. tennis

So happy about Marion, I've watched most of her matches and have loved seeing her win through. Its wonderful to see someone who does not fit the mould really succeed at what she is passionate about - just wish my short dumpy 16 year old self could have seen her - I might just have been able to laugh off all the teasing I had back then! She is an inspiration to all of us who were not in the P.E. teacher's good books.
Can always remember standing in my (homemade by Mum) tennis whites holding my bargain basement tennis racquet and seeing the woman's eyes literally roll as she looked at me. Am not saying I would ever have been any good, far from it, its just I was simply written off as being too chunky, too short and too ill equipped!

Bartoli's victory well deserved. Lisicki is a charming runner up. Both girls won my respect.

betsysgran Sat 06-Jul-13 15:50:25

The girls so obviously have great respect for each other. A pleasure to see. Shame Lisicki was overwhelmed by the occasion.

whenim64 Sat 06-Jul-13 15:49:38

Well done, Bartoli. She was the better player today. So sorry for Lisicki, who lost her mojo and got it back too late. She was gracious in defeat - a lovely girl.

annodomini Sat 06-Jul-13 15:42:35

She's so bouncy and was by far the more confident of the two, also a good tactician.

whenim64 Sat 06-Jul-13 15:18:48

Bartoli reminds me of Monsieur Hulot, with her practice moves on court, and hopping up and down. Can't help but smile smile

annodomini Sat 06-Jul-13 15:16:15

She was falling apart a moment ago. Not far from tears. Poor girl.

whenim64 Sat 06-Jul-13 15:12:42

I can't watch.........Sabine looks distressed. I hope she gets it together. sad

annodomini Sat 06-Jul-13 15:09:36

Disappointing match so far. tennis Lisicki's mum looks very fed up.

Tegan Sat 06-Jul-13 15:03:31

I quite like Boris. Struggling to watch this match, though, so channel hopping with the racing.

Ella46 Sat 06-Jul-13 13:49:55

He's getting worse I think, really up himself!
