Greatest Sporting Event

Rugby World Cup 2003. As it was in Australia we had to get up really early for all the matches but never missed one.
After each England game my younger son would ring me from whichever pub had been open to show it & we would have a good celebration.
After the final ( which I was so nervous about I watched the last 15 mins through the crack in the door) we were going mad & celebrating when he rang & we had the usual- love you Mum- What a result etc. conversation.
20 mins later the phone rang again & it was my son saying he was sorry not to ring before but could not get a signal on phone & long queue for the pay phone..
I still wonder who that man was I was speaking to & if his Mum gave him an earful for not ringing her!

British cycling team had me glued to the tv during the Rio Olympics

DH enjoys watching the Six Nations Rugby. I knew absolutely nothing about rugby, but I started to sit with him (with my knitting) while it was on. Now I know quite a bit more, and when the players go for a "conversion", I can be quite "gripped". My favourite bit of any rugby though (and this is not in the Six Nations), is when the NZ players do the "haka". Sends chills down my spine!

England winning the Rugby World Cup in Australia with a winning drop goal by Johnny Wilkinson, 2003 I think it was. Brilliant.

I cannot think of a single sports event that has had me gripped.

1966 and the world cup, I was in my early 20s and was completely unaware that it was taking place and couldn't work out why the streets were so empty when I wandered down to my local shop to buy some batteries for my radio. When I asked the shop assistant he told me and before I got out of the shop, he was out the back and watching it on tv again.

For me sport is something you do, not something to watch. If I am not doing it I am not interested.

Sydney Olympics - the Rowing final - all 120 guests at DD's 18th crowded into tiny room to watch - amazing. Plus the Jonny Wilkinson drop kick - World Cup Rugby.

I think one might have died of a drugs over dose. I'd ask DH but he's watching football!!!!

Kitty, only one I can recall was late 60’s , Poncho Gonzalez and Charlie Pasarell, think it was five sets and the most games ever , or may have been one much earlier.

I was at my judo club when the 1966 world cup was played and couldn't understand why everyone disappeared to the bar next door.

I think Virginia Wade winning Wimbledon, Andy Murray winning Wimbledon and Torvill and Dean dancing to Bolero would be my top sporting events.

Also, DH and I missed a dinner reservation because we sat in the car listening to that really long tennis match in the mid 70s (?) before they introduced tie breaks. Can't remember who the players were but they were both quite charismatic.

1966 World Cup Final for me too. Remember going back to school in the September still on cloud nine. The 2001 match between Germany and England, played in Munich, which we won 5 - 1, comes a close second.

It has to be the 1966 cup final for me too, not least because we had only got married a few weeks before, and we watched it with DH’s family. He leapt up so high when they scored the last goal he fell over the back of his chair! It didn’t make me into a footie fan, but I’m glad I saw it.

I sat, glued to the black and white 14" TV in 1966 watching the World Cup final. I was 14 at the time, and remember leaping up and down with joy in our kitchen when the final whistle blew. Loved football ever since.
