So far!
I'm not a football fan, but this is exceptional.
I'm very pleased for all of those who enjoy this type of thing.
I hope that it gives us a bit of a boost.

As you can probably tell I am not a football fan but pleased that England won and spirits are raised.
However this is not actually the final, a long way to go to that. It’s a knockout round and yet the press and papers are dominated with the result.
Two teams playing and one had to win. It’s the players job to try to win. I just don’t get this what seems to me to be such out of proportion euphoria.

fantastic result was what we needed this year.

Nanatoone Wed 30-Jun-21 11:30:27

We watched it and really enjoyed it although constantly worried about losing, phew. It feels nice after all the bad times to have enjoyed a little success.

Bluecat Wed 30-Jun-21 11:27:58

I am glad that the reason for the lying-down player has been explained. I have never noticed them doing that at previous matches.

I was delighted that England won, after losing to Germany at this level every time since '66. Pity that some of the fans couldn't be gracious about it.

Thoroughly enjoyed the match, particularly the score. Keep going England.

On the other hand, William and Kate were quite formally dressed as well, so perhaps George wanted to be like them.

George wanted to be his daddy's mini-me, so even their ties were the same.

WELL DONE ENGLAND!!!! Good tactics Southgate.
This .... plus Andy Murray's win the day before .... has given us all a much-needed boost. I felt normal !!! Yay!

Well done England! I'm another that never watches in case I bring bad luck.

Oh thanks, Chardy and NotAGran. I had no idea. Seems rather weird, not to mention painful if the poor old draught excluder gets hit in the tummy by the ball!

Did you notice little Prince George sitting between his parents? It was only a quick glimpse but was the poor lad wearing a tie and a jacket? I know he's heir apparent x 3 and I would draw the line at him wearing football strip like some other kids but surely he could have been casually dressed? On the other hand, William and Kate were quite formally dressed as well, so perhaps George wanted to be like them.

Great match, great result and I don’t particularly like football!?????????????????????

It was a great game. That young lad, Saka is it?, was brilliant and he's only 19. I cringed every time a German player tackled him, which was a lot. Incidentally, did anyone else notice that when the Germans got a free kick at goal one of the England players lay down on the grass behind the wall of English players. I saw it twice. Is it so they can tell the others which way the ball is going>

It's called the draught excluder. When the wall jumps, a canny kicker can kick the ball under the wall. So the draught excluder is to stop that happening

NotAGran55 Tue 29-Jun-21 21:37:05

NotTooOld it is called a draught excluder .
It is to prevent the ball going under the players’ legs as they jump when the free kick is taken . It should plug the gap .

It must have been amazing for skinner and baddiel to have been there tonight and hear the crowd singing, I have a soft spot for Baddielsmile

Alishka Tue 29-Jun-21 21:17:56

Exactly,Ngaiol - each to their owngrin
I've been playing the Skinner/Baddiel song on a loop for days now.wink

Ngaio1 Tue 29-Jun-21 21:03:47

I can never understand why anyone becomes excited over a bunch of uncouth men kicking a ball around. Each to their own, I suppose.

Shinamae Tue 29-Jun-21 20:56:22

I remember watching the 1966 game,I was 13 and watching it at my auntie‘s café and a load of patrons came through to the living quarters to watch it as well. I must say it brought tears to my eyes today, very well done England ?????????????

Lin52 Tue 29-Jun-21 20:51:47

Im sure they count with the players and the fans.

dustyangel Tue 29-Jun-21 20:49:35

blush I should have added that DD wasn’t born until 1968.

I don’t know why this particular England v Germany match has meant so much to so many. I’m not really into football but am really pleased England won

tanith Tue 29-Jun-21 20:38:39

I was holding my breath waiting for it all to go wrong so pleased it didn’t .

dustyangel Tue 29-Jun-21 20:34:22

Not really a football story but this is especially for FannyC having started the post. As soon as the game was safely won, I text DD 1 saying that if England hadn’t won in 1966 she might not be here now……
and she probably wouldn’t be able to help telling the extended family with whom I knew she was watching the match.
She text back “You’re right, I told them!” ??‍♀️

Sarnia Tue 29-Jun-21 20:11:24

Not a classic German team by any means but still nice to beat them. With some of the big guns out England could go all the way.

Izabella Tue 29-Jun-21 19:59:54

Thought the roads were quiet.

monk08 Tue 29-Jun-21 19:53:51

I'm allowed back in the room now. They always loose if I watch ?

ayse Tue 29-Jun-21 19:45:01

My granddaughter 6 had a bit of a conundrum. She drew Germany in her class sweepstake but also wanted England to win. I’m sure she’ll be very happy when she sees her Dad tomorrow. Her sister 6 is not interested in footy at all. She takes after her Nan and Mum. DH however, is beside himself that England won. It takes all sorts
