Ashamed of British fan last night

I never watch football as I hate it but I did watch last night because I am English and proud of my country. It was very exciting and at the end was thrilled with the result and the way the players behaved.

However, having seen that an English fan shone a laser in the Danish's goalkeeper's eye when Kane went to take the penalty kick I was ashamed.

I have tried, GG13 to support the English football team. Not in this competition, but in the past. But I'm afraid I can't do it. Its not in me.

Last night there was a program talking about the young men who are playing and what a good manager Southgate is and I thought, yes, good for them, hope they do well. Then this morning there's Telegraph with its picture of Southgate, summoning up the warriors of old.... Rio(?) Ferdinand earlier this week talking about when England beat the Danes, how it wasn't really in question. Before the match had even started.

And with respect to DiscoDancer1975, England don't get to decide if the game is played or not, if they decide not to turn up, the game is void and Italy win. It's the attitude that England have more power and rights than they really do that gets some people's backs up.

So I won't be supporting England any more than I supported Portugal, or Switzerland, I'm afraid. I don't wish them ill but they're not my team.

Agreed Lins52 and GrannyGravy, we have a team to be proud of and we are, very proud indeed.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 10-Jul-21 14:16:32

Totally agree Lins52 the English Squad are something to be proud of. Good to know they will be donating their playing fee to NHS Charities.

Thank you for the link Alegrias1 being English I would hate to see Scotland breakaway from the union . If it were Scotland, Wales or N.I. playing in the final against Italy instead of England I would happily support any one of the home nation teams

I wonder if the people on here saying cancel the match, ban all the fans, are the same people who would punish a whole class of children because a couple of them are naughty, just to make a point?

And this is coming from a Scot grin

Interesting you should say this. I agree with you, it used to annoy me all the time, when our senior schools regularly did this with our childrens classes.
The reason? The teachers were trying to make the point bad behaviour wouldn’t be tolerated, and in punishing the group, they felt it more effective. Certainly stopped the perpetrator being ‘ hidden’ by the crowd.
My husband says it would be good if the team decided Sunday’s game won’t go ahead, until the fan who committed this crime is identified. He’s sure anyone who knows it’s him, would soon speak out then.

I have just seen this, today’s front page of a Scottish Newspaper?

Thought I'd write a post but this will do the job, I think.

www.thenational.scot/sport/19434072.nationals-roberto-mancini-front-page-divides-uk-bitterness-banter/

Any comment about the "Och Aye The Who" headline?

We've moved on from bitterness to resignation. In the words of the great Ally McCoist: Choose Scotland. Choose disappointment. ?

For anybody still reading, I agree so much with Lin52 and her comments about the men who make up your team. Something to be proud of.

Lin52 Sat 10-Jul-21 13:10:31

Rude, ignorant and bloomin ungames manlike, is that even a word?, and it’s a shame England has been fined, easier I suppose than finding the people who did it. On another note, on a miserable morning, I was reading about the young men and their manager who make up our England team, socially aware, against racism, a brilliantly diverse team who are all in it together and support each other. . What wonderful role models for youngsters, and for all ages really. Any winnings they are donating to NHS charities. Brought tears to my eyes. Win or lose they are young men this country should be very proud of.

Should have added, UEFA could easily put a stop to booing by introducing a rule that the game will not proceed until there has been a boo-free anthem. Even if that involves stopping and starting again a few times.
I’d have thought that would sort any ill-mannered yobs out.

However UEFA is not exactly noted for giving too much of a toss about anything but the money.

Witzend Sat 10-Jul-21 12:58:03

I read somewhere that the Danes booed the Welsh anthem, and also every time the Welsh got their hands (feet) on the ball.
Just saying.

The FA have been fined £26,600 by UEFA. FA note, not the players. It is similar at football grounds where it is the club who get fined for fans bad behaviour.

Callistemon Sat 10-Jul-21 10:06:07

Saetana
No complaints from our Danish friend either.
Even I, who don't understand football that well, could see that the Danes did a fair amount of barging and dirty tricks.

The OP said she was ashamed of a British fan - one.
I think we all are in agreement.

lemongrove Sat 10-Jul-21 09:18:44

Tell that to the Danish team??

kjmpde Sat 10-Jul-21 09:15:16

I find all this football stuff irritating But if you have to cheat to win then you should not take part in the first place.

lemongrove Sat 10-Jul-21 09:02:54

Saetana ??????
I don’t need to type it now, you have said it all.?
A marvellous effort by the England team to get so far, and I shall be cheering them on tomorrow.

lavenderzen Sat 10-Jul-21 08:37:54

Well said Saetana. Thank you.

Excellent posts Saetana

And for those whining about fairness - the Danish free kick was a result of a "dive" and the goal should have been disallowed as their wall moved within touching distance of ours instead of being the regulation 1 metre away. The own goal by Denmark would have been nailed by Sterling if it had not happened - and Raheem Stirling did NOT dive! Check the footage from the right angles - he was first knocked on his knee and then hip barged onto the ground by the second Danish player. It may have been something of a soft penalty, but frankly made up for the more egregious foul on Harry Kane down the other end which was a more definite penalty - and resulted in a free kick being awarded to Denmark!

Saetana Sat 10-Jul-21 02:42:48

He did NOT shine it in the goalkeeper's eye - Schmeical said himself afterwards that he did not notice it during the free kick (which he most certainly WOULD have done if it had been shone into his eyes). Obviously nobody should be shining lasers on anyone but this has been blown out of all proportion by much of the media - trying to stain Harry Kane's penalty and subsequent goal. Frankly it would be nigh on impossible to be that accurate with a small laser pen from that sort of distance. If its possible to find out who did it then they should be arrested and charged - however I find UEFA opening an investigation and potentially planning to punish the England team more than a little nauseating, this was not the first match where some idiot shone a laser pen. And, for anyone who believes anything they read in the Daily Mail, there are no words for you that are suitable to print here! Oh yes - and one of the photos going around showing the laser on his face has been heavily photoshopped, the laser pointer is just not that big. I am getting so tired of people finding every excuse they can to do down the England achievement of getting to the final.

Yorki Sat 10-Jul-21 00:29:34

I thought those lasers were illegal too. Luckily the goalie seemed oblivious to it, as it missed his eyes directly. Someone must know the culprit, someone must have been standing beside him, watching him do it. It's a wonder they can't find him or her, with all the security cameras around.

Callistemon Fri 09-Jul-21 23:49:20

Kryptonite

England have also been charged for booing during Denmark national anthem and fans letting off fireworks.

The England side/team (?) has been fined for it.

Totally bewildering.

Why not find those responsible and ban them from football matches for life and charge the person with the laser?
Or is that too difficult?

jocork Fri 09-Jul-21 23:22:10

I was also disgusted by the fact that some of the English fans booed during the Danish National Anthem. I was out of the room but still noticed the booing. I'm not a football fan and wasn't watching as such but just curious about the outcome. I'm disappointed that a historic win has been tarnished by such reprehensible behaviour by a small but very vocal minority.

Yammy Fri 09-Jul-21 23:15:27

I once heard the saying"Rugby is a game for thugs played by gentlemen, Soccer is a game for gentlemen played by thugs." Maybe it shouldn't say players it should say, supporters.
Who could think up a thing like taking a laser pen to aggravate the goalie who could be bothered, obviously someone can what can their mentality be?
My DH has been to many Rugby union matches at Twickenham and Murray field and says the supports might jeer each other but it is always in a slightly light-hearted way.
