I thought this a good idea

@MichaelRosenYes
I propose an Olympics for the over-70s (further sections for over-80s, -90s, 100s).
To avoid heart attacks and other forms of dropping dead, the sports would be eg toe-nail cutting, best dishwasher loading, memorising shopping lists, stone-paper-scissors, TV switcher use etc.

I would add best time at going up the stairs (with bad back)

Parsley3

Yes, Drug taking will be allowed.

Phew! Even Furosemide and Nytol ?

Certainly paracetamol doesn't help much in the Climbing the Wooden Hills to Bedfordshire event.

I wonder if Michael Rosen has read this thread!

What about the lying flat on the floor and getting upright event- only two pieces of heavy furniture allowed as props.

Hope it isn’t a timed event!

Oh M0(a)nica….. where’s your sense of humour? If you don’t like it… don’t answer!!!! Simples…..

I don’t think that morphine has any performance enhancing properties.
If it does, I’d be keen to know about them… ?

Parsley3 Thu 05-Aug-21 19:21:24

Barmeyoldbat Thu 05-Aug-21 19:15:50

Do we get drugs tested? Am I allowed to take my morphine before competing in some of the events.

These ideas did make me laugh! ?

Thank you for this lovely thread, I read it after watching some of the athletics for the real Olympics and was feeling rather depressed at how strong, fast and thin and young all the athletes are ?

I don't think I would get through many of the eliminator rounds for the sports you Gransnetters have suggested so I think I will postpone my efforts and try for a place in the OAP commonwealth games in 2022, that's only a few miles away from where I live so it will save me having to make a long journey to Japan ??

But on a more serious note I have decided to do the national lottery sometimes in the future in order to help our great GB team as a lot of the medal winners this time have said they are grateful for the support its given them in their sporting career. Don't suppose there's any spare money for training aids like zimmer frames for us geriatric would be olympians? ??

Our local vet has just posted this on FB - not septuagenarians, but our moggies!

Standing on one leg with your eyes closed. Much harder than it sounds. Recommended by Dr Michael Moseley for improving balance as we age.

Brocky Thu 05-Aug-21 16:54:31

What a good idea but count me out for ‘memory’. I can go at 8mph any takers?

Brocky Thu 05-Aug-21 16:52:43

What a good ides - count me out re memory. I can go at 8 mph (using mobility scooter if allowed). What fun!!!

grannybuy Thu 05-Aug-21 15:55:27

Getting up from squats is a harder category than getting down!

Issipy Thu 05-Aug-21 15:43:40

I'm withdrawing from the top nail cutting. Had no training since I can't see them!

Lucca Thu 05-Aug-21 15:35:50

Biting your tongue chez AC,….. this is a marathon event.

Aepgirl Thu 05-Aug-21 15:29:24

The starting gun would have to be loud to accommodate the hard of hearing.

Going upstairs whilst remembering why could be another event.

Fashionista1 Thu 05-Aug-21 15:12:27

The Squat challenge, how low can you get

Stairlift racing

Mobility scooter racing

Who can stay awake for 12 hours challenge

How many names can you remember challenge

grandtanteJE65 doing things one handed is my superpower ?

HannahLoisLuke rap the bottom of the jar sharply on a hard surface. I use the butchers block as I don’t want to mark the work surfaces. Then the lid will twist off quite easily. No idea why it works, probably breaks the seal somehow. I have skinny weak wrists and it works like a charm for me.

Sadgrandma Thu 05-Aug-21 14:48:26

Going upstairs and remembering why you went!

gillyjp Thu 05-Aug-21 14:28:18

I dont qualify for this until next year but in the meantime I'm practicing for the Dosette box discipline - the fastest time it takes to load up a fortnights worth of necessary medication in those cute boxes. ?

coastalgran Thu 05-Aug-21 14:25:23

I would still love to see the age groups do Skateboarding and BMX biking, perhaps a bit of surfing as well, I don't mean on GN I mean on water.

Alison333 Thu 05-Aug-21 14:19:46

How about the hunting for reading glasses and finding them on your head in less than 30 minutes event?

Yammy Thu 05-Aug-21 14:06:46

DanniRae

I have loved reading all these ideas ....... can I add the taking off a bra without getting undressed event? grin

Good one and how automatic semi finale for those that don't have to put a bra on without putting the fastenings at the front then turning it around and struggling with the straps.

nipsmum Thu 05-Aug-21 13:46:10

Going upstairs carrying a laundry basket. I would be disqualified, also speed of laundry folding is no longer Olympic standard.
