Has anybody been watching the football?

Fleurpepper Sun 11-Dec-22 18:54:41

Joseanne

Yes, the best teaching in these skills starts when young - sharing collaboratively, taking turns, impulse control, obeying and following rules etc.
And then all these can be transferred to every day life.

Totally. Sport is wonderful, especially team sports that encourage cooperation and working together, as a team.

But when you see the behaviour of too many dads are football, rugby or other games, the shouting and swearing, and often worse, then you know it has gone too far.

Of course you want your team to win- totally normal. But when it goes far, far beyond that, then you know it is too much. My favourite games are hockey and rugby btw- but the same applies.

The French game was dirty, and the umpire hopeless and inconsistent.

I'm hoping Croatia or Morocco wins smile

Blondiescot your anti English prejudices are showing, and yes, it was a juvenile comment from you.

We did well tonight tho, a respectable outcome 2-1.
Didn’t think we would get so far tbh.Hope Kane doesn’t feel too bad about it.

I can assure you I have no anti-English prejudices, it's purely and simply a football thing, and yes, most football banter probably could be classed as juvenile. You should hear some of the things I say about my own team's bitter rivals here in Edinburgh! My English friends all know this and take it in the spirit in which it's intended - they can give just as good as they get, I assure you. There's no malice involved.

Grandma70s Sun 11-Dec-22 08:31:51

Thank heavens for that. Perhaps people/media will talk about something else now.

Joseanne Sun 11-Dec-22 08:23:53

That's good Maw. Just remind him that when he gets to play for Juventas, AC Milan or Real Madrid that his grandma would like to come along to watch shop and be treated! I keep telling my DGS that PSG is the one I want! grin

MawtheMerrier Sun 11-Dec-22 07:44:16

I can imagine like lots of young (and old) people all over the country 2nd GS was devastated. He plays for the “Blues” (Birmingham City) under 11’s and has been thrilled to experience training sessions at St George’s Park - the England training ground in Staffordshire.

Joseanne Sun 11-Dec-22 07:33:03

Good on your DGD vegansrock!
And of course if France wins the tournament we can always say we went out against the elite!

vegansrock Sun 11-Dec-22 07:15:33

My youngest DGD has an England and a French football shirt. She changed to whichever side was winning. That’s the attitude! Now it’s Allez les Bleus in her household.

Nana3 Sat 10-Dec-22 22:49:47

My grandson and I watched it together, he goes to watch our local team's home matches. He was very invested in an England win. After the match all I could think of to say was "nobody died". We laughed.

Ziplok Sat 10-Dec-22 22:47:11

No, I haven’t. Can’t stand it. Sick and tired of it dominating the tv schedules. Be glad when it’s all over. Vain hope, as I’m sure some other sport will take its place after all this over hype.

Callistemon21 Sat 10-Dec-22 22:42:26

Oh dear, just when I was feeling proud of DGD (only playing for 4 weeks) who scored a hat trick 😀

At least she wasn't sitting playing on an iPhone, she was out in the fresh air.

We should not teach them to put so much into nationalism and ball games! Ridiculous

Tosh!
Tell that to Roger Federer - it’s just a different size of ball.
Team spirit, pride in their country , loyalty, skill in any sports and physical fitness should be encouraged in all children.
Don’t be so woke.

The pundits who bog on about its coming home and were on our way to the final every 5 minutes spoils it for me and puts unnecessary pressure and expectations on the team. They seem like a nice bunch of young men and I do feel sorry for whoever is on the loosing side.

NotAGran55 Sat 10-Dec-22 21:52:11

It was a very nasty comment indeed. Poor Chris too who must surely have been watching 😢

Aww. It's the children I feel sorry for every time we lose.

We should not teach them to put so much into nationalism and ball games! Ridiculous.

I would teach every child who enjoys it to put everything into ball games for so many reasons.

Tell that to the Swiss!
6-1 defeat might colour your views though.

Sport of all kinds kinds is good for children, better than sitting glued to phones and iPads.

LauraNorderr Sat 10-Dec-22 21:39:52

Yes Notagran, you’re right, every time I try to sound knowledgeable about sport I look like an idiot. Time I gave up and went back to the couch.
Can’t even get me toooooo right tonight

LauraNorderr Sat 10-Dec-22 21:37:07

Meanest comment ever ‘They needed Gary Lineker, they got Glen Hoddle’.
Sad but true

Except it was Chris Waddle not Glen Hoddle.

Lighten up

OK. I get it

Could you tell your compatriots to do the same on GN please!!

I guess we at least stayed longer than some very good teams.

Sorry Callistemon, I meant to quote Blondiescot!

It's fine!! ⚽️
