I Never Realised The Olympics Is This Year, Sometime.

Is it significant these days?

Nowadays it's an event that gets swamped by accusations of cheating by using performance enhancing cocktails of drugs, before it even starts.

Then there's the usual crop of disqualifications and careers tarnished forever, but then there's a lot to aim for if an athlete gets the gold. Product endorsement worth millions, sponsorship and lucrative contracts galore. The temptation to do ANYTHING to shave a split second off a performance is tremendous. The days of Ancient Greece when athletes sought to excel in the pursuit of integrity and a laurel wreath have gone.

(Will we ever see the 100 metres sprint done in 1 second - there must come a point when the human body just cannot surpass its own capabilities.)

Oh no, just seen this - Charlotte Dujardin has pulled out of the Olympics over 'an error of judgement' in coaching methods?

I like random information. It was on our local Devon news last night that we have sent a team of gorgeous spaniel sniffer dogs to Paris to support the French police. Apparently, after The Olympics the dogs are being invited to the Embassy in Paris for a slap up dinner!! And maybe even a slurp of champagne. 🥂

Do you that wonderful news clip of Macrons dog (black lab) calmly “marking” the corner of a no doubt priceless antique marble fireplace in the Elysée www.google.com/url?q=https://m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DANjhZTQQASM&sa=U&sqi=2&ved=2ahUKEwjsztf6hL2HAxUrQkEAHdxXAScQwqsBegQIGBAF&usg=AOvVaw3Fr4NXSGXTMIMjkKIAe7Yx
(Puts dogs in cafes in the shade)
Hilarious though!

Discovery+ is currently £3.99 and is easy to cancel.

It is now free with Sky.

Free with Sky, Tizliz? Can you explain a bit further.

My DH has Sky Sport, would that now cover Discovery+ (before I pester him to subscribe...)

And I bet they don't have to pay the flippin' £250 each vet's fee for all the passport paperwork!

If you avoid newspapers, online news and tv news, then I guess you're not going to be aware of many things which others consider to be of considerable importance or interest.

That is not what I wrote.
Apart from the tv news bit.

Did I say it was? I wasn't quoting you directly.

And heaven forbid that we might be allowed to add a bit of topical humour at times!

Have a wonderful time foxie48 we’ve been aware of the Olympics for a good few months and will watch some of the events, as we did the Euros and some tennis. After the Olympics it’s straight into the football season, happy days.

I'm interested in seeing shots of Paris so I can dream of being there!

The only thing that could spoil my enjoyment of the 2024 Olympics is that John Inverdale might be “commentating” on sports he knows nothing about. The fact that Steve Redgrave will not be there has me worried. 😟

Not seen it mentioned on GN.
Dont see much sport.
Havent noticed it on online newspapers.
Avoid mainstream TV news as much as possible.

That might explain why Fancythat and OP. have been unaware of the sporting event of the year- even for non-sports fans.
After all the threads decrying Euro24 and Wimbledon I fervently hope we will not have a slew of anti- Olympic threads.
I think it is great to celebrate achievement and to be able to feel a benevolent and non-xenophobic national pride.

I’m always suspicious of broadcasters that say it’s easy to cancel the subscription!

MaizieD Tue 23-Jul-24 10:48:10

As to watching, I've found this on the British Dressage site

Watch every second of the Olympic arena with Olympic broadcasters Eurosport and Discovery+. This is where you'll be able to guarantee coverage of the dressage events, but you will need to hold a subscription to be able to enjoy watching. It's just £6.99 per month, with no long-term sign ups required, or £59.99 for the year. You can cancel your subscription at any time, and there may be discounts or offers during the Olympic period.

Just read that a lot of the equestrian sports won’t be available to watch as it will be behind a paywall and won’t even be on the red button sad Hope that’s not correct.

I was so afraid that would happen, but it was like that for the last Olympics so I am not surprised.

I am so envious of foxie48 that I can't even find a word strong enough to describe my envy😂

MissInterpreted Tue 23-Jul-24 10:24:17

Aww, that's not good MayBee70. I was looking forward to seeing most of them.
