Just that really. All things related to the 16 day event.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 26-Jul-24 16:08:38

I will miss the opening ceremony this evening which I usually enjoy. Hopefully catch up tomorrow.

Calendargirl Fri 26-Jul-24 16:34:19

Have just re-watched the 2012 opening with the late Queen and Daniel Craig, as DH reckoned he had never seen it!

maddyone Fri 26-Jul-24 16:43:24

Will pop in here to join in the chat.

Looking forward to the opening ceremony im sure it will be spectacular, interested to watch, skateboarding, gymnastics and ice skating.

Oh no! 😱

“The opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games takes place this evening along the River Seine.

Preparations for the Games have been hit by a series of scandals and today, most seriously, by what appear to be coordinated attacks to sabotage France’s rail network.

As the day has progressed concern has grown about this evening’s weather, with heavy rain predicted and a flood warning issued.

One forecaster even said Paris could see 10 days of rain in two or three hours, while another said the equivalent of 15 days of rain could fall between 6pm and midnight.

Organisers are praying tonight’s audacious event, which is due to begin at 6.30pm (UK time) and will be watched by more than 320,000 spectators on the banks of the river, goes without major incidents.”

Really looking forward to the Olympics and so hope the French can get things rolling without too much trouble from the dreadful protestations of detractors.

I'm very much looking forward to all the different sports, but it's already spoilt for me - Claire Balding presenting again. I do hope she's not going to be doing everything. She's not my favourite presenter but I can accept her presenting sometimes. The trouble is that she's ubiquitous at the moment...

NotAGran55 Fri 26-Jul-24 18:02:15

I’m really looking forward to it, thank you for the thread. Tennis, rowing and diving for me.

I’m also going to take a look at the dressage for the first time ever.

I always enjoy the Olympics; it gives us a chance to watch sports that normally wouldn't be televised, and it garners patriotism.

At work we are having a fun contest where we are picking a country team (all very low in standings), and keeping track of medals, with the prize being a chocolate medal and a bag of sweets. My country is Mongolia... so I will be following them as well as Canada and hoping for a good showing!

Just arrived home and found this thread. Thanks for adding the little running man to distinguish this one from the others!
Can't wait for the opening ceremony. A friend and ex colleague of DH's has been out there in Paris since May, working on perhaps one of the most technically challenging aspects. We have received several updates and tips what to look out for.
I sincerely hope it all goes well for the French. I've just spotted a Breton flag from an apartment window, so I'm feeling at home already.

Grandmabatty Fri 26-Jul-24 18:40:49

I don't mind Clare Balding because I think she is very knowledgeable and doesn't flap easily. I'm not a big fan of the 'filler' material I'm watching at the moment.

tickingbird Fri 26-Jul-24 18:42:24

I love the Olympics and really looking forward to the swimming, gymnastics, athletics and, of course the tennis.

I also love the swimmers when they make their entrance; they’re such cool dudes grin

JamesandJon33 Fri 26-Jul-24 18:45:22

Well not enamoured so far. A bit like the village carnival. Disorganised flag waving. I need something spectacular

Jaxjacky Fri 26-Jul-24 18:46:04

The boats are moving so quickly the commentators are gabbling all their facts and figures!

Grandmabatty Fri 26-Jul-24 18:50:54

I like the idea of the Seine. It's such an iconic river for Paris. And Lady Gaga is good

Grandmadinosaur Fri 26-Jul-24 18:53:32

Yes great use of the Seine. Not too sure on Lady Gaga though.

tanith Fri 26-Jul-24 18:53:40

It’s all a bit disjointed and how many people present would of been able to see Lady Gaga?

ixion Fri 26-Jul-24 18:55:11

Not doing it for me, quite honestly, this evening.
If you are celebrating at a position 5 km down the Seine, would you even be aware of Lady Gaga's performance?

ixion Fri 26-Jul-24 18:56:02

Sorry, Tanith - crossed posts!

Whitewavemark2 Fri 26-Jul-24 18:57:52

That was why my son decided to sell his opening ceremony tickets. He realised that he would not be able see the whole thing in one go as you do in a stadium., but most of it on huge screens.

grumppa Fri 26-Jul-24 18:58:07

Having seen Lady Gaga's performance, I wish I had been 5km. down the Seine.

tanith Fri 26-Jul-24 19:00:10

ixion no prob x

aggie Fri 26-Jul-24 19:01:03

Some of those boats are bumping about ! Choppy waters

NotAGran55 Fri 26-Jul-24 19:01:53

I feel sorry for the flag bearers, not getting the honour of leading their country into a stadium.
