Show jumping now on iplayer (14:26). Only knew because they mentioned it on the main channel. I would have missed it (grrr).

Last Olympics we could watch our chosen sport on the red button couldn’t we? I’m so disappointed that we have to subscribe to do that this time.At least I’ve managed to see the show jumping phase of the eventing but that was more luck than judgement.

Not the last one, no. The last time that was possible was 2012, before the Beeb was outbid for the broadcast rights.

As with so many things, blame the last government for slashing the BBC’s funding.

It’s so detrimental to the sports themselves. Was it cricket or rugby that stopped being on terrestrial tv and suddenly the sport no longer attracted young people it?

We have it on all the time here - loved the swimming. The UK divers were really good, too. As with most countries we do concentrate on our own and what they are good at. Athletics are not a strong point with Australians so I don’t suppose we’ll get so much of that. One thing I notice this year is that they are not showing the medal presentations, even when Aussies get gold. No idea why.

Even though she had four fences in hand I still watched through my fingers. 😂

I just had to turn the sound down just now: wasn’t brave enough to hear what Laura Collett did!

Looks as if we missed quite a lot. 😃
We turned the TV off because we got fed up with all the witterings in the studio.

I don’t know what it is about the Olympics, but for a few weeks every four years I get totally enthralled by canoe slaloms, BMX racing, skateboarding, things that never normally interest me in the slightest. I love the side stories - the Hashmi sisters who used to cycle in rural Afghanistan despite their neighbours throwing stones at them, how many left handed fencers there are, Adam Peaty’s road back to fitness. Simone Biles is just magical. And I just can’t wait now for the athletics to start. smile

The setting for the Equestrian Cross Country was absolutely stunning!

Along with Dressage, I find that this year I am looking with slight unease at the Dressage and (women's) gymnastics. Looking perhaps over closely - are they happy, uncowed, adequately praised?
What exactly happens in your training out of the spotlight?
How much pressure are you under to perform?

And on a lighter note - do these young gymnasts have to have the 'regulation' hairstyles? Are there any girls out there with pretty soft heads of curls?

My DGD is a gymnast (not Olympic - yet! 🤸‍♀️) and yes, for displays and competitions she has her lovely, long, straight hair in a bun and plastered back. It's difficult to identify who's who sometimes.

I can remember having to do the same for my DD when they were taking ballet exams, not a hair should be out of place.

Spent nearly all of yesterday (Sunday) stuck indoors watching DiscoveryPlus so was able to see all the sub-divisions of the Women's Artisitc gymnastics competition. With GB haivng their competition early in the morning, and having to wait until late at night to know if they qualified as a team in top 8 for the finals, it was very nailbiting. - but they did, and we can hope to see a less nervous team and no falls on Tuesday evening

Franbern Mon 29-Jul-24 08:57:49

ixion re WA hairstyles. It is still very much in fashion for young women to have long hair. For gymnastics this needs to be firmly and securely tied back. Lots of hair spray is used to ensure that not a single hair can come loose whilst they are performing. When they go out for a team event it is very normal (at all levels of competition), for them to decide on a single style and ALL team members have it.

Adam Peaty was so close to getting another gold medal and is a fabulous swimmer. He should be proud to have done so well.

And Andy Murray I can't believe they actually won that match after saving 5 match points.

I was thinking how lovely Rebecca Adlington is. She is so totally natural and makes intelligent comments.

Casdon Sun 28-Jul-24 21:59:35

We’ve been watching the swimming. Well done Adam Peaty, such a great athlete. The most handsome of Italians won the gold, but why had he dyed his hair blond, he would have been even more handsome with dark hair?

Another nail biter from Andy Murray well done to him and Evans.

Absolutely!
