Why oh why do singers drag out the National Anthems. That renditio of The Star Spangled Banner was excruciating.

To add insult to injury that’s one of the worst versions of the Star Spangled Banner I’ve had the misfortune to hear.

Countryfile was very good this evening as was Simon Reeve in Cornwall.

That's a couple of hours I'll never get back. Switched away after 45 minutes of Clare Balding & Co repeating themselves to see the end of CountryFile (which shows how bored I was) and then stayed with Antiques Roadshow. Switched back just as the flashing lights and weird discordant music started, and peeked out occasionally from behind my Sunday Telegraph only to be confronted by the baffling and excruciatingly self-regarding antics of Gimp-suited refugees from Cirque du Soleil trying their hands as scaffolders. After a few minutes fruitlessly praying that an Opening Ceremony-style deluge would put us all out of our misery, I took the executive decision to turn the telly off. I like the French, but just occasionally they are so far up themselves....

I’d forgotten all about Sylvia Vartan. Wasn’t keen on Johnny Hallyday.

I like Françoise Hardy and Richard Anthony.

That's it for four years.

Ravel, Debussy, Bizet ....

But none of that featured in the closing ceremony. ☹

They can certainly run an Olympics well though petra, which is far more important. I thought they did a brilliant job, beautiful venues and very smooth operations. Well done France, let’s hope LA is as good.

There was a clue that it was going to be as awful as the opening ceremony.
The opening ceremony had a joke in the first few minutes.
The closing ceremony started with a durg. Not too bad by French standards.
But, we all know there’s two things the French can’t do: humour and music.

Yes, it was lovely to see the athletes.

The highlight of the evening was the joyful athletes, obviously happy and having a great time. They should have cut straight from that to the handing over of the flame to LA.

Anyone going to watch the perseid meteor shower?

Gawd this is boring!

It’s always cloudy at Perseid weekend. The years I’ve spent sitting in the garden for half the night, usually when I had to be up for work the next day. I can’t actually believe it’s that time of year again though.

Which direction?

Well they reckon the east of England will get the best view. But apparently
