Will football finally come home?

For those who care, I welcome the news of Thomas Tuchel's appointment as the new England manager.
Gareth Southgate had his chance but fell short and Lee Carsley's interim tenure shows he isn't up to the job but unlike Southgate, he knew it.
The Daily Mail calls it a dark day for England on it's back page this morning. Why? It isn't the first time England have had a foreign manager and there are many national teams with a head coach who is not from the country they manage. The teams are multi-national too so what's the problem. Perhaps the shortage of experienced and enthusiastic English born managers tells its own story.
I think Tuchel may just be the right man for the job. He has some top players at his disposal so fingers crossed.

Where are you planning to go? Antarctica?

World Cup next year, time to go on holiday and avoid the whole thing. I didn't even watch England when they got into the finals of the Euros last year.

There is also -more inexpensively- something on your tv called the "Off" button.

Oh dear, haven't we always had managers (at club level) from other countries as well as players?
Trust the DM to make a political issue out of it, if that's what they did.

I think he has an excellent record, knows England & in view of how we've treated our England football managers (Southgate excepted) we're very lucky he's taken the job on.
Nothing wrong with the material he has to work with!!

Remember John Redwood, Welsh Secretary - trying to sing the Welsh National Anthem, his mouth opening and shutting like a fish?

It's hypocritical. Like singing "God save OUR gracious king" when someone is German.

So long as he’s a good manager, I doubt football fans will care whether or not he sings the national anthem, particularly given he isn’t British. If he delivers that will be enough.

Thanks Allira.

I don’t remember anyone making a fuss about it with Sven. Let’s leave Tuchel to make his own decision - probably wrong whatever he does!

It might. Germany has been very successful. The players will need to buckle down and accept Tuchel’s discipline however.

I don’t think he should sing our National Anthem but the players should. What did Sven used to do?

"I'm not sure I ever entirely mastered "God Save the Queen" but there I was, a Swede, standing in front of the bench and trying to sing it a bit. People don't think of me as emotional but, inside, I was that night. It was emotional – very emotional – for me."

Why would he sing our National Anthem. It's for British citizens. He is German and has his own country's anthem.

confused
Because he is the England Manager, not the German Manager perhaps?

I’m just so ashamed of all the questions being asked of him about being German. Will you sing the National Anthem etc.

Well the interim manager wouldn't.

And that was blown out of all proportion, too…

A commentator on the radio said it was a win win appointment.
If England win - great
If England lose we can blame the German

AGAA4 Wed 16-Oct-24 14:06:06

He should be given a chance to prove himself.
