Very sad news for Liverpool and football fans everywhere to hear of the tragic accident that killed Diogo Jota and his brother. Their car left the road in Spain after a tyre blowout. Diogo only got married 2 weeks ago and leaves 3 small children. RIP.

DrWatson it really depends on who the tragedies touch. Football reaches across nations and has hundreds of thousands of followers enough said.

Apparently Liverpool FC will honour the last 2 years of his contract and also pay for the education of his 3 children. A thoughtful gesture by his final club.

That's generous, buy absolutely as it should be.

And re the journey, yes, he'd been advised not to fly back for pre-season training, due to a recent operation, so they were driving to Santander (possibly Bilbao) so he could get a ferry back to the UK.

But, though they likely never considered it, they could have just driven to perhaps Salamanca, then got one of Spain's fast trains to the port, though the ferry takes quite a while to Plymouth or Portsmouth anyway.

I've sailed on that Brittany Ferries crossing. It departs from Santander. The vessel is called the Pont Aven, it has a lovely restaurant, a swimming pool, shops etc. You get on around 4 pm and arrive in Plymouth the following day around lunch time.

I was in an area yesterday where football players live and witnessed a red super car being driven extremely noisily and well over the speed limit. Fortunately it was an open road and although my hearing was damaged at least no one was injured. I expect supercars are part of the problem.

Yes, it was a tragic event. But, there would have been other families, who also suffered terrible tragedies in the last few days, who might well be wondering, why all the fuss for a famous footballer, not our loved one(s)?

I expect their family will long wonder about their choices, and how Fate or the Good Lord rolls their particular dice?

It was very sad watching the funerals, his parents must be in absolute shock to lose their only two children in one day. My gran struggled after losing my mum and her sister 6 years apart.

I also feel so sad for his wife and three young children, who are all under 5 years of age. My father died when I was 6 years and I still feel the effects of this 60 years later.

Very sad for the family, his children, wife and close friends. The coverage has been extreme but then I’m not a football supporter.

I have no time for football either, but this is a tragedy.

My DGS has been to Anfield today. He wrote in the condolence book that he will sing the Jota song at every match. He won't be alone.

Diogo was a phenomenal player for the club but he never forgot his humble background.
He was popular not only with his teammates but the fans as well. 26& 28 are way too young to die
My thoughts are with his wife , children, parents and his teammates.

It is shocking and I feel so sorry for his wife, children and the rest of the family. Poor parents have lost two sons. How awful. I really did shed a tear when I heard the news. So young.

It is a tragic thing to have happened for him, for family and fans but do we need the constant news coverage? The family asked for privacy for the funeral but the media and fans went along to pay their respects! That isn't respect, it is intrusive and unnecessary. There are terrible things happening to ordinary people all over the world but they aren't getting the sort of coverage this family are getting.
That said, Rest in Peace to both of their brothers and condolences to the families. Let's give them space to grieve.

I am a huge red, and this has hit me hard. He will be greatly missed at Liverpool Club. I am grateful that I saw him play live a few times.

His poor mother losing her two sons. His new wife and his three children having to go through this. It's truly heartbreaking.

Rest in peace Diogo and Andre YWNA

He used to play for our local club. Everyone seemed to think positively about him as he always seemed likeable and gave his all opwhen playing. Everyone was sad when he moved to Liverpool.
You have to feel for his family as it must have come as such a shock and to have his brother killed at the same time.

Grandmadinosaur Thu 03-Jul-25 16:54:31

Yes Sarnia, our lives are mapped out for us, by Someone more powerful than any of us…it’s a good thing we are not privy to that information..

What a terrible loss of life of two talented young men. So sad for the families. I read it was a twist of fate. He had been told not to fly after recent surgery so was driving to take a ferry instead. So very sad.
RIP

When I hear something like that it makes me wonder if our lives are mapped out for us.
