Anyone else recall Terry and Bob in 'Whatever happened to the Likely Lads' trying to avoid hearing the results of a football match before watching the TV broadcast of it on 'Match of the Day' late evening?

We watched it live at 2am and it was amazing! I shall have a little nap this afternoon I’m sure! ⚽️⚽️

Fascinating that so many people not only remember a programme from over 50-years ago but recall the storyline.
I wonder what comedy series of the past decade+ will be fondly remembered in 2076? I can't even recall any now!!

Here’s a screen shot of the ten most popular sports in the world. Football outnumbers everything else considerably. Maybe that’s because it’s a sport that can be played with very little equipment.

We were going to stay up and then found out it was going to be delayed by an hour. So we decided to go to bed and set the alarm for 7am and watched it then on BBC2. Made sure we didn’t look at any phones or iPads so didn’t see the result beforehand. Didn’t expect that result tbh. I’m a massive football fan, but usually more club than country. What a great game and great result. Go England. Hopefully all the way to the final!

It was an. intense, thrilling and absolutely fabulous match.

England played at high altitude, on Mexico's own turf on which England has never won against Mexico before. A match exactly. 40 years after the Maradona's "hand of god" goal that should. have been disallowed, but knocked England out of the quarter final World Cup, 4 years after the Falklands war.

So many elements brought the drama and anticipation. Bellingham scoring twice in quick succession played with such determination and what a header! Pickford strong goal. Kane, as ever, reliable on the penalty kick.

England got their very well deserved revenge 👏👏👏 👏 ⚽️ 😀

I am old enough to remember the 1966 World Cup. you know the one where England actually won it

This World Cup has been massively
over hyped. And the degree of commercialisation and money grabbing by the Yanks has been really cheesy and quite sickening

I stayed up - it was the best game I’ve ever watched. It had absolutely everything. Well done lads - onwards and upwards. Just got back from a funeral this afternoon so now ready for a little nap to see me through the day 😊

I watched it live and so glad I did. It was a great game. The added on 11 minutes at the end were a bit nerve racking but England got there in the end. Next they play Norway, might be a different kettle of fish but what will be will be.

I remember 1966, I was very ill with a combination of asthma, chest congestion and proper influenza.

I can still remember how awful I felt 😿

We had TV’s in the three bars (a novelty back then) totally packed, my mum popped up to check on me when she could.

My formative years included a football, cricket playing father, whose first intro to water polo was as a Royal Marine on the Mediterranean fleet in Ww 2, they played off their ship. Dad was big of fairness, honesty, integrity and accepting the ref’s decision even if you didn’t want to. I expect Mr Trump’s formative years were different

It’s best I keep my views of the current POTUS private.
