I was suprised the opening ceremony wasn't on the BBC but channel 5 last night I didn't watch it as not that botbered about the opening ceremony but would like to watch the athletics and swimming but no its not on 'normal' telly. Its on one of the Sports channels you need to have a subscription for I only have Netflix courtesy of my daughter so it'll be hilights on the news presumably for me. So annoyed now, apparently the BBC couldnt match the bid so lost the rights. So anyone who doesn't pay to watch misses out what a shame.

Such a shame. There should be funds to cover these important events.

I read that the 'teacups' were featured in the opening ceremony.

Words fail me. The Commonwealth Games are an important national and international event. They should be available freely on a BBC channel.

They are free to watch on Channel 5 M0nica

Maybe as the games were due to be in Australia the BBC had other commitments and programmes booked like The Hundred (cricket)

They are only showing a hilights program on channel 5 tonight and tomorrow at 10.30pm GrannyGravy13 the BBC simply couldn't match the bid made by TNT Sport, is this the way all our important events will go? To whoever has the most money! Its bloody annoying!!!

I think you mean 'teacakes'. The Tunnock's teacake was a feature of the opening ceremony which I did watch.

So sad that I am unable to watch the Commonwealth Games, being held in the UK.
I have never, and never will, subscribe to any sort of pay channel.
Also such a pity for the wonderful competitor that they are not able to get good coverage of their efforts in this.

I find it annoying that the national broadcaster who we pay money to, can't show The Commonwealth Games which showcase all the countries in the UK. It's the sane with other national events like The Golf Open etc.

The media have annoyed me by headlining the achievement of Sean McCann, who was representing Scotland in swimming, as Madeleine McCann’s brother. The poor man, even when doing something important like that is still defined as her brother, not as himself. I think that’s wrong.

I think the BBC cannot win regarding its sports coverage.

There were moans and groans about the football, some about the tennis and cricket.

There are regular updates on its news channel I believe.

Don’t pay their fee - they’ll learn PDQ

Casdon Sun 26-Jul-26 13:25:22

The event is not on BBC nanna8. They do not have the money to outbid.Commercial channels for events.

TNT seem to be taking over a lot of sports coverage in the UK. They are owned by Warner Bros so they have far more money to spend than the BBC but a subscription is about £30 per month so the audiences are going to be a lot smaller. The Commonwealth Games would have had a higher profile if the BBC or ITV had the broadcasting rights.

We get it free with our broadband package but the coverage is amateurish compared to the BBC. I expect in a year or two they'll have poached most of the more experienced commentators so it might improve.

I was really annoyed to find out that there was no coverage on the 5 main channels part from 1 hour (!!) highlights on channel 5 at 1030pm! I haven’t watched it as their highlights of the para Winter Olympics gave 45 mins of programme ,after ad breaks, and most of that was taken up by “pundits” in the studio.
Both our main channels found enough cash to show endless football, plus hours of discussion - I actually like most sport but am disgusted that the vast majority of viewers can’t watch 3000 athletes compete in the wonderful event.

It’s on BBC Alba (Gaelic tv channel in Scotland, but available UK-wide, I think) every evening from 5:30 pm. The commentary is in Gaelic without subtitles, but at least you can see a lot of the events. I read the other day that two million households in the UK refuse to pay their tv licence. That’s a great loss of income for the BBC.
