Lipstick - worth the fuss?

Not sure if it's just me but the proper waxy lipstick just seems to be the wrong texture for my skin now. I think it's just not worth it any more? The makeup ladies on the counters seem to be pushing me more and more towards various kinds of lipglossy stuff and I'm not really a fan (gunky, sticky, gets everywhere). I like the colour 'proper' lipstick brings to my face but i'm not sure if it's just not going to work for me any more - anyone got any bright ideas/brands to try? Thanks so much for reading!

Estee Lauder Pure Colour Lipsticks are fab, you can have cream or shimmer in lots of fabulous shades and the beauty advisors are super.

Bobbi Brown are excellent - natural colours and great textures. I personally prefer gloss now - matt not a good idea.

Good old Number 7........and what is truly scary, I suddenly realised that I now do what my Mum used to do....even if wearing no make-up...I still make sure I dont leave house without lipstick on.........!

Clarins is my one luxury! I have over the years, however, perfected the ability to apply it without a mirror ... and once its applied feel I can face the world!

Mac lipsticks are superb. Huge variety of colours and has great staying power as well. I also use a lip pencil, which seems to make the colour last longer, even withstand a couple of glasses of wine!!!

Lipgloss can take a little bit of getting used to after years of wearing normal lippy but its worth the effort as it softens your look and can make you look younger some can be sticky and gunky but clarins have a lovely range i recommend the colour mystik its really lovely

I stay with Max factor (the ordinary stuff) and no. 7. I tried the one that needs a stick of what seemed like Vaseline on top of it - and I didn't like it at all. Does anyone remember Tangee Natural. It was the first lipstick that my friends and I were allowed to use. And it stayed on!

Hi, I switched to gloss a few years ago. I use Chanel lip gloss which I've found ok, not gloopy. It costs more than some others but it lasts absolutely ages.

Never wear conventional 'lipstick' and haven't for years - very aging, IMO. Glosses can be OK (eg Lancome Juicy Tubes can be nice in summer) but my preference is for a 'lipshine' - a very sheer texture which isn't powdery like a lipstick or sticky like a gloss. Lots of brands now do them. Bobbi Brown is a favourite of mine. Also Clinique. Have noticed brands like Chanel and YSL as well as Clarins also starting to do this very light texture.

Also like lip balms. My favourite is By Terry's Baume de Rose - lovely. That has a very faint pink tinge but you can also get lots of coloured balms.

Despite Anita's dislike of it Max Factor's 'Lipfinity' has become my lippy of choice - colour stays on for hours and just use the clear balm from time to time during the day to go on top of the colour.

Hello everyone , I am new to gransnet and enjoying your comments enormously . I must say that I too have been using Max Factor's Lipfinity for years and have become a great fan .As I am sure I will be of this web site .Good to meet you all

I don't use any of the 'long-last' lipstcks - all much too powdery and harsh, therefore aging, on me. Prefer to stick with the 'lip shine' formats and just renew more often if necessary. One good new range of these sheers is Lancome, L'Absolu Nu.

I just read that the average woman consumes 6 pounds of lipstick in her lifetime. Now I know why I can't loose weight, it's all those hidden calories.

Years ago when having a sun spot removed the specialist advised me to wear lipstick to protect my lips. Lip gloss etc might not be helpful, as it may have the same effect as wearing baby oil on the skin which might let in UV rays. I also use a lip liner to cover my lips under my lipstick. I am using Clinique at the moment.

ITA about glosses and am delighted to find another By Terry fan here. Good make-up is one of my luxuries and I "economise" by using a very simple moisturiser & put Vaseline on my lips at night.

I agree glossies are better but I cant manage the liquidy type in a tube with a wand gets everywhere and husband asks if I've just had a jam sandwich - such a charmer! I like Bobbi Brown but the colours are muted, so I also like Clarins which are rich and creamy for winter when lips are dry, Chanel are lovely and very long lasting. I bought a nice glossy Clinique called Raspberyy glace on Saturday as I had gone out withut a lipy in my bag - imagine the horrorsmile Dont believe the sales girl when they tell you if you have had a lippy for a long time its gone off - it hasnt!

I love to try all the latest lipsticks out but the favourite has got the be Chanel
or Clarins which seem to suit me best of all and stay on all day,I also tend to
use lipliner in a slightly differant shade to keep the colour from running when going somewhere special, for everyday I use juicy tubes which are great for me

Nonu Wed 01-Feb-12 14:06:23

The lipstick goes on first thing, love it

Annika Wed 01-Feb-12 14:52:45

welcome riclorian good to "see" another new face.
I am a No7 fan. I have never tried Avon lipsticks any good ladies ?

GoldenGran Wed 01-Feb-12 14:58:16

Can't go out without lipstick, I get it from my Mother, she wore lipstick lliterally until the day she died. I like Clarins, and a particular red by Chanel.

shysal Wed 01-Feb-12 15:26:13

If I had to choose just one item of make-up to wear it would be mascara, I think it improves my appearance more than any other. If I do use lippy it is always a fairly neutral colour or tinted balm.

Annobel Wed 01-Feb-12 15:59:13

I'm a naturally pallid person so blusher is essential unless everyone is to remark on how pale I look. Lippy tends to disappear on me, but without it, my mouth disappears. Always liked Arden's colours.
