I'd like to buy a new winter coat this year and no its not too early they appear in the shops from about now and then dissappear straight away - I missed the boat last year. I want a full length i.e. mid calf overcoat navy or black budget not more than £350 (its got to last years) nicely fitted and flared to disguise child bearing beam-end. Can you tip me off if you see something nice plse?

susiecb,I bought a really nice navy wax mid length coat three yrs ago from
John Lewis it is made by Burbury and is really good fit it is fashionable and
very stylish and it can be dressed up with a nice scarf etc, this is the 2nd
wax coat from their range and all I can say is they age well and look classic.
Good huntingx

I'd like a 'proper' winter coat too rather than my old anorak or the sheepskin one with 'fur' edges which is warm but very 60s. I'm going to try Next as they're trendy but not OTT. The Burbury one sounds nice though. I have a long [and I mean long!] mac which was fabulous in the snowy weather but it's not smart.

Dont laugh you lot but I bought a rich chocolate brown 'Montgomery' duffle coat last winter and have been very pleased with it. They do a standard fit for ladies and a more feminine fit now as well as a decent range of colours, I even noticed that Carol Klein was wearing one on Gardeners world. Its been amazingly useful and coped with the worst of last year's weather and also still manages to look smart when I want to dress up a bit.

I'm not laughing. I think duffle coats are great - very warm and cosy. I'd not considered that, so thanks for the idea smile

I love duffle coats Carol (weather girl on BBC Breakfast wears nice coloured ones in the winter I wonder where they are from?) I am looking for a smart hopefully wool coat this year though John Lewis is my first stop for everything these days (see thread about M & S).

Have already bought mine from Boden.............not full length but almost looking forward to winter so that I can wear it!! Noooooooo.......sorry, I really didn't mean to use that 'winter' word...............

I love duffle coats and have a nice short red one from M & S !!!

Do you think it is ok for a 60 + woman to wear a duffle coat.? I am a very casual fitflops/crocs and Ugg boots sort of gal !!
...I never go anywhere to wear a very smart coat but do like it to be lined. (allergic to wool next to skin) ...oh, apart from Cashmere !!!!

I'm going to pop down to the charity shop like I usually do when the time comes. I've had some really good coats over the years and when I see something suitable it doesn't break the bank. smile

I got a fab cream jacket from charity shop by Debenhams
earlier on in the year and it has been the best but this year

Why not Grumpyoldwoman, your duffle coat sounds really nice!

Jaegar sell excellent coats, they are a bit pricey but last for years, thats the problem, I last bought one 3 years ago, and do confess to being fed up with it now. In fact Sandra in New Tricks is wearing my coat!!!

I've kept an ad for a 'Montgomery pea coat and reefer coat' which took my fancy last year; trouble is I don't want to buy anything without trying it on. Dug out my River Island jacket for dry cleaning yesterday; it still looks quite smart but the lining has gone. Tried to repair it with that iron on sticky stuff, but each time I ironed some on I found another tear. Even if it looks smart on the outside I'll KNOW it's all ripped inside [bag woman complex]. Must remember to buy some 'irononstickystuff' for my daughter [as grandson is starting school soon].

Of course, duffel coats have got a hood [a must have, for me; I bought a long wax jacket without a hood once and have never ceased to regret it].

I wear a Drizabone wax jacket - winter and summer. In winter I just wear more underneath it and it keeps the wind and rain out. Mr G says I look like a bag lady and should get a 'proper' coat,so on saturday when visiting a Country Show I took him at his word and bought a very YA'ish 3/4 tweed affair which cost him quite a lot of money - but he doesn't know that yet! The last proper winter coat I had, was my school coat - a very nifty number in blue tweed but I grew out of that about 45 years ago smile

GOW of course you can wear a duffle coat, being over 60 opens the gate to wearing what you want, but maybe not mini skirts! Unless of course you have amazing legs!

Yer right about Jaeger.......I used to work for them but certainly cant afford their prices now. To be quite honest I dont think I want to be able to afford their prices, clothing now is much more about (a) does it do the job, (b) was it made in the uk and/or ethically (c) do I look okish in it and (d) does is show cat hair and all the other bits of detritus that I pick up? My now, quite elderly, full length Jaeger coat (6 years at least) only comes out for winter funerals now and I have to stand outside in full daylight with a clothes brush making sure its suitably smart.
