Modesty insert needed!

Sorry - the title is probably more exciting than the question grin. I bought a very nice dress in the Laura Ashley sale to wear to a wedding. It is a soft jersey fabric and has one of those crossover necks that plunge and gape. For the wedding I wore a camisole underneath (black because M and S didn't have any navy ones), but I found it a bit hot and as I would like to wear the dress on holiday, I could do with a cooler insert. I thought of sewing a triangle of plain navy fabric in, but I think it might spoil the line. Any ideas?

How about a couple of stitches to bring the plunge and gape together a little higher - or an popper or two?
A simple silver broach?

My grandmother (remembered Queen Victoria) used to have selection of little lace squares that she used to just pin or prestidigitation inside!

I have a selection of modesty panels which clip to your bra straps. They come in a selection of colours, with or without lace edging. If you Google 'modesty panel' you will find plenty of sites selling them, including Amazon and Ebay. Why are all V-necks too low for me, especially from Next?

I'm very long bodied and fat,so unless the cleavage reaches the waist I don't have problem!

Mamie Fri 13-Jul-12 10:05:10

Thank you - you lot are brilliant. flowers. Plain navy modesty panel ordered from Amazon!

nanaej Fri 13-Jul-12 10:17:41

I must get some of those! Thanks for the link! I am short, have a narrow back /shoulders but out of proportion boobs (not sexy just Hattie Jacques)confused so to get a fit on the bust I often have a gaping top which I have often used brooches to close but the panels look like a better option!

I have to say that I bought a pack of these a while ago, and found them to be useless! It may be my bras, or the fact that I have a narrow back like nanaej, but the actual material was far too wide to clip the attachments to my bra straps and lie flat - it sort of rippled and gaped! Not a good look...sad

Mamie Fri 13-Jul-12 10:41:35

I bought the large size as I have a broad back. It told me to measure between bra straps to get the size. Will let you know....

Anagram Fri 13-Jul-12 10:46:03

Which ones did you buy, Mamie? I didn't see any navy ones.

Ariadne Fri 13-Jul-12 10:51:45

There's nothing to beat a little gold safety pin! Or two.

Anagram Fri 13-Jul-12 10:57:07

Oh - I've found it now! smile

My mum used to wear these in the 30s .She called them 'modesty vests,
I got some from the 'Betterwear' catalogue.in white, black and cream.-quite successful. They are also in 'Coopers of Stortford' catalogue.(3 for £4.99)

I've just taken to wearing 'modesty panels' from Avon and find them so useful I've just ordered some more in different colours. Highly recommend them.

Is anybody old enough (?) to remember mums/aunities/grannies wearing garments which were like the front of a blouse with tapes which tied round the back and were worn under the jacket of a "costume"??
I had a wonderfully staid maiden aunt who scandalised a Princes Street tearoom which she absent-mindedly took her jacket off and draped it over the back of her chair!

I had a polo neck which covered only the neck, chest and shoulders. I can't remember whether I knitted it myself or bought it, but I wore it a lot.

Mamie, how were they? I'm still hopeful of finding some that do the job properly.

glammanana Tue 31-Jul-12 11:28:12

I've got the ones from Avon and they are great I've also got a couple of very thin vests that have lace across the front and they work well if I wear a low cut top.

Boasting again mamie !!!grin

Mamie Tue 31-Jul-12 15:31:17

Anagram Tue 31-Jul-12 15:53:24

Mamie Tue 31-Jul-12 18:26:16

Oh I see gracesmum - only because the V in the dress gapes open, didn't say there was much to reveal!
