DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME

A while ago I bought a 10x magnifying mirror in the belief that I might be able to pluck my eyebrows myself, with my glasses off. (Trying to pluck one's eyebrows with one's glasses on having proved difficult to say the least)

Having given up, I went for a waxing session last Tuesday with my usual beauty (ha) therapist. She did my brows, lip and chin.

Today I felt the first signs of a coarse hair coming through, and, grasping my trusty tweezers firmly in my hand, approached the aforementioned mirror.

I had ommitted to remove my glasses.

Dear Reader, the vision that met my gaze was monstrous. Every wrinkle became a crevasse into which any semblance of youth appeared to have plunged, what might have been a "laugh" line became a furrow never to be ploughed again, the merest suggestion of a crinkle around the eye (yes, call them "crows feet" if you will) showed itself to be etched so deeply that no hope could be pinned on even the most celebrity endorsed cream known to woman.

I am distraught! Please, please do not allow yourselves to suffer as I have, I beseech you.

I have always operated on the principle that I know my way around my own body well enough to be able to perform all my ablutions without the need of glasses. I can get dressed without my glasses and if I wait until I am just about to go downstairs before putting them on I am spared much grief.
Short sight is nature's way of coping with the visible signs of ageing. smile

Phoenix. grin For your own peace of mind. Just stick with the salon and put the magnifying glass back in the cupboard, or better still a charity shop.

The first time I looked in my x10 magnifying mirror I went straight to B & Q for a packet of Polyfilla grin
Scary things aren't they Phoenix?

Ana Wed 19-Dec-12 11:16:30

I've got one too, and since the first shocking view of my full face I wised up and now I only look at the bit I'm interested in at the time, eg chin for stubborn wiry hair removal! I don't wear glasses so I can't even protect myself by taking them off.....confused

I do my own hot waxing at home and it works well. I buy the pack in Boots and use the strongest sort. Eyebrows without glasses is tricky, but I only get the lopsided look occasionally now! Saves loads of money. I heat the pot of wax on the woodburner in winter and over a tealight in summer.

Serves ya right Phoenix !

Whatever possessed you to look into a magnifying mirror, and wearing your specs for good measure, in the first place?

Only yourself to blame grin

I'm afraid that if I did not complete this risky manoeuvre every few days there would be stray whiskers in unpredictable parts of my face.

I'm going for IPL when the tan wears off and then I won't ever have to worry about it again.

Ana Wed 19-Dec-12 13:28:14

Mine are too pale-coloured for that, I fear! sad

Movedalot Wed 19-Dec-12 13:59:06

Yes Ana that is why I have to go asap because a few are grey and it won't work on them so must go before any more do so.

Ana Wed 19-Dec-12 14:25:46

Mine are blonde, but a moustache is a moustache, whatever the colour....blush

Riverwalk Wed 19-Dec-12 15:03:29

Movedalot .... IPL.... Indian Premier League?

Pray tell grin

JessM Wed 19-Dec-12 15:14:16

I think it is that laser hair removal thing is it? Only works on pigmented hairs?
I wonder how many people see the ads and wonder what laser hair is and should they be worried?
There was a trend a few years back for "a Brazilian blow dry". I wondered why anyone would want to go to the hairdresser to have their pubic hair dried. Or - if they had a "brazilian" - why would they need a blow dry. I was so puzzled. grin

Movedalot Wed 19-Dec-12 15:21:33

Yes, Jess something like that but different - result the same - no hair regrowth. You can't have it unless your skin is pale so no tan either real or false which is why I have to wait as I still have tan from hols and mine tends to last.

Happy to go to Brazil though grin

Blimey, it's like watching the Billy Goats Gruff e.mailing each other.

grin

Ana Wed 19-Dec-12 20:28:32

Not quite sure how to take that, POGS! What can you mean? confused

Marelli Wed 19-Dec-12 20:50:39

I had a go at my whiskers today shock. I usually use facial wax strips and have to do it every week or so. I 'treated' myself to one of those JML 'Finishing Touch' thingys, which is a pretty 'tool' with a pretend amethyst on the end of it....and felt like Desperate Dan after I'd finished with it - the whiskers were only shaved away, and the stubble remained. And the thing is, they're not just hairs - they are real bristley whiskers.....blush!

Nelliemoser Wed 19-Dec-12 21:17:55

pogs Its a totally unflattering remark but very funny. grin grin grin

NfkDumpling Wed 19-Dec-12 21:25:57

I made the mistake of putting the mirror down and looking downwards into it to sort out the bits of wire that seemed to be sprouting from my chin. I knew about the wrinkles but I'd also gained two more chins of surplus flabby skin.

crimson Wed 19-Dec-12 21:31:44

I think one of the reasons our eyesight starts to fail as we get older is so we don't have to see ourselves any more. Or, if we do it's in a Greta Garbo type hazy way. I never clean my mirrors...

NfkDumpling Wed 19-Dec-12 21:47:19

grin [like]

annodomini Wed 19-Dec-12 22:11:16

Yes, I see, failing eyesight is Nature's way of airbrushing. grin But the steam on the bathroom mirror also helps.

Ana Wed 19-Dec-12 22:15:09

But we're only fooling ourselves, aren't we? All those people out there in the real world with 20 20 vision can actually see our hairy bits! shock

NfkDumpling Wed 19-Dec-12 22:42:57

I try to keep most of mine covered!
