Long grey hair

Ana - It's always good to shatter an illusion or two.

Shoot me down in flames then, but I have the occasional perm, (and colour) because I just have no idea on doing my hair. No patience either. I want to be able to put my rollers in once or twice a week, and know that it will stay looking reasonable in between times. The crunch comes when it`s growing out, as I can`t afford the hairdresser more than a couple of times a year, so then it gets longer, and stragglier, and if I try to put it up it just won`t go the way I want, so it stays down with a hairband keeping it off mjy face, as now, saving up to have it done again for my holiday in June.

Each to their own. I'm going to hairdresser this week. Hair's getting long but thinking of having it chopped - roots need done anywayand highlights need highlighted! Not ready to be grey yet.

Oh gosh please don't get offended any long haired grans! Sure it looks lovely poor Mary beard does have unfortunate teeth too but who cares beauty's skin deep and is very rude to comment!

Bags, that's a date - and by the time we meet up again, I shall have longer hair! I used to have long hair and then got it chopped shorter and shorter until it was spiky. I'm thinking now of just letting it grow and wearing it up/down now it's white. It looked a bit drab when it was grey.

I can't see anything wrong with Mary Beard's hair - it is part of who she is. My hair is short and straight, because it's easy and I look hideous with curly hair. But I do colour it because I don't recognise the aging lady with greyish hair that I sometimes see in the mirror

I think a woman should be able to wear her hair anyway she likes. I have very thick, curly hair, and I've been waging a lifelong battle against it. I've had it very long, very short, and everything in-between. I have more brushes and implements of torture than any salon, and it's been every colour from dark chestnut ( my natural colour) to white blond (my new natural colour!). I currently have it longish, just past the shoulders, and although it is a pain to dry, at least I can whip it all up into a clip. I occasionally leave it to dry naturally, when it triples in volume, but mainly give it a wavy blow dry. I have to admit that I find long hair more feminine, which is good at a time in my life when it is easy to feel old and unattractive. I think Mary Beard is amazing!

Well, you may have been waging a life-long battle Hummingbird but I am !

If I leave mine to dry naturally, it lies flat on my head and falls unattractively over my face, although that might perhaps be regarded by some as an improvement on my usual appearance.
I have to coax my hair with lots of 'product' and two different types of hairstyler to achieve any volume at all, and the vagaries of the weather play havoc with it

That's funny Jane. Trust me, though, with one's hair, as in many other areas of life, too much is easily as bad as not enough!

I've always had fine hair that has a mind of its own, no matter what my hairdresser tries to do with it. I was never able to grow it long because it was simply straggly which was a big disappointment in the sixties - no beehive for me. Now it's mainly silver, short, inclined to be curly in wet weather and full of static in frosty weather - can't win.

Oh I can't be a****d with "products"! I never bother with any of that stuff and just wash it and let it do its own thing. I am just an aging hippy really!

Mine needs product.

I use hair products. Here's my list of products: brush, comb, shampoo, towel.

hummingbird your hair sounds exactly like mine. It is the bane of my life! I'm still in search of the holy grail, ie a clip that holds all of my hair without breaking after a few uses. I keep my hair long as it is completely uncontrollable otherwise. I let it dry naturally till just damp then dry it off with a hot brush type hair dryer, my arms would break if I tried to blow dry it from wet.

bags comb, brush, shampoo and towel are not 'product' in the hair-dresser-defined sense of the word.
Please note the use of the word is singular, not plural.
It is used in a derogatory way when you go to a new hairdresser, as in 'ooh! There's a lot of product on it, isn't there?'
Funnily enough, one's own hairdresser takes a different view, recommending a wide variety of 'product' to help maintain their lovingly created coiffure

How long is your hair Riverwalk? The brush thing looks quite big and my hair might be a bit short for it.

Jane my hair is jaw-length, layered bob type of thing. It's just long enough for this brush which is quite big.

I'm not sure if there is one with a slighter smaller brush.

Baubles, respect - it's good to meet a fellow sufferer. If you ever find the perfect clip, please let me know. I've bought them in all shapes and sizes, but the beast (my hair) always gets the better of them. And don't talk to me about 'Product'! You name it, I've tried it. Big sigh.

fabulous grey hair, even a plait!

baubles some faulous cut's on there aren't there ? that is what makes all the differance I think a good cut and good shampoo and conditioner make for an easy life in my book.

Fabulous styles Baubles - my hair is now white and I'd love to have the courage to go short and layered again. I used to have very thick black hair so it was a bit of a shock to go 'negative' and it's no longer thick! Probably stick with the status quo - just below chin level and cut into the back. I had longer hair until about 3 years ago - looking at photos, I think it was a bad mistake

gally what we have to remember is that those models probably wake up in the morning looking nothing like their photo's they have some top stylist on call for every photo shoot,how very unfortunate for them eh? I wake up looking like "not to night josephine" and if washing then spend an hour drying the mop it takes ages.

Those women DO look fabulous - but they're all beautiful, and in the main, look like they've been coiffed and beautified for the photographs. I know that on me, with my home-made attempts at grooming - it really wouldn't work! #bringontheniceandeasy (see other post about hash tags!)
