What not to wear........to Aintree

Oh my dear! Pictures in today's newspaper (Telegraph) of girlies at Aintree yesterday in skimpy dresses, bare legs, skirts slit up to here, bare arms, boobs all to the fore - WHAT DO THEY LOOK LIKE?
Judging by Clare Balding and Alice Plunkett's outfits today (coats, boots etc ) the weather is still pretty parky but in any case what is it about race meetings that makes girls think it is appropriate to look as if they are tarts off out clubbing? I say "girlies" but there was one picture of woman more than old enough to know better than to wear a one-strapped dress with her embonpoint clearly in need of a bit more supprt and a lot more fabric shock

My favourite is the appearance of the lady in pic number 4, and the lady in picture 14 [on the far left,] wearing an oyster coloured outfit. Her hair was neat and she looked extremely elegant. smile

Blimey! The last one reminds me of the winning dominatrix at the convention I accidentally stumbled on in Los Angeles once!

Yes, that was very elegant. Ufortunately my laptop is being very silly today and showing everything in "wide screen" - if I reduce to less than 85% I can't read any writing, but any pics are still streeeeeeeeeeeeeeetched with unfortunate consequences for legs, bums and tums!!!grin

Yes! What an elegant, stylish head turner. But I thought the red foxy lady was even better. Oh well, I can but dream.

I liked the outfit in black and white with pearls too, mice. Is that the one you mean?

Bags Sat 06-Apr-13 14:42:12

My mocking doesn't imply anything of the sort, anno, only amusement and the fact that it's not something I would do. Wouldn't dare for one thing. So there's an element of amazed admiration in my mockery, as well as an acknowledgement of the silliness.

DD mocks my choice of attire all the time, but she's twelve so she would.

MiceElf Sat 06-Apr-13 13:59:41

I think the foxy lady in dark red, and the black and white dresses are lovely. Would that I were tall enough and brave enough to do the same. Sigh.

annodomini Sat 06-Apr-13 13:50:18

Mocking implies an attitude of social superiority; laughing at their costumes (a theatrical term is more appropriate than 'outfit') suggests a more kindly attitude - or does it?

j08 Sat 06-Apr-13 13:41:54

I think they are brave. Long live silliness. And fun. grin

soop Sat 06-Apr-13 13:35:50

I felt embarrassed on behalf of certain "girlies"...I KNOW I'm going to get flack for saying so, but, the term "scrubber" sprang to mind. hmm

It's not unkind to mock. I'd expect to be mocked if I dressed ever dressed like that, never mind on a cold day. I'm not worried about their health.

Since when weren't we allowed to laugh at silliness. Harmless silliness is all it is. Of course we can laugh. Wouldn't surprise me if that's partly why they do it – to entertain people.

here's a gallery of pictures. The ones in the Welsh flag dresses are making no secret of their origin. It's a bit unkind to mock but I too am rather worried about their health. Today is warmer.

And notice the people muffled up in the background of the pictures wink

Well, one of those lasses who goes out without a coat is in bed with a high temperature today. It was 40+ yesterday and this morning but going down now. When I measured it this morning she said "it doesn't feel like 40 any more." She's getting better then.

I agree about the 'funny' – quite bonkers being out in such skimpy clothes when it's actually quite cold. I think it's the impracticality of it that amazes me. Allright in a twelve year old (you expect them to be daft), but adults...? Ah well, if it makes them happy.

But I'll still scoff at the silliness.

They don't seem to be heels more like those platform things that Slade used to wear years ago! I had to snigger one year at Ascot when the ladies had to put plastic bags over their shoes cause it was so wet. Having said that, there aren't many occasions where ladies can dress up and summer racing is one of them [like, where else can you put on the wedding outfit you bought for a small fortune and only got one day's use out of?]. But it's funny seeing people dressed like that when the rest of us are wearing our wax's and thermals.

gracesmum Sat 06-Apr-13 11:33:59

Reports of fillies being shot because of broken legs on Ladies' day !!grin (no not funny if real, sorry Tegan and others blush)

MiceElf Sat 06-Apr-13 08:18:55

Why does it matter if it cheers them up? And what about those lassies who go out without a coat every day grin

Bags Sat 06-Apr-13 08:12:18

grace, wink Thinking the same things as you. Ridiculous outfits, even on a warm day. Some people have very odd ideas about what is attractive. But the funniest part is the silly heels sinking into turf. I wonder if there were any sprained ankles, and I'm not talking about the horses.

gracesmum Sat 06-Apr-13 08:02:20

I'm still ducked down behind sofa waiting for the flak from Essex/London/Brum!!! And if I'm honest, MK!! grin

glammanana Fri 05-Apr-13 23:48:29

gracesmum sorry on my part not read properly apologies and everything that goes with it winecupcakeflowers etc etc I know you are jesting sweetie and I don't ever take offence. x

gracesmum Fri 05-Apr-13 23:42:28

How would that offend Glamma? I think you have totally misunderstood me. I said that the badly dressed ones *were coming from London and Birmingham NOT indigenous Scousers. If anything I was echoing what you said about Scouser girls being attractive. OK I have probably offended any Brummies but you know I don't mean it grin

glammanana Fri 05-Apr-13 23:33:02

gracesmum good job I'm not a scouser I could easily be offended ouch !! grin thinking Frank may still be deliberating over a new coat ?

gracesmum Fri 05-Apr-13 23:27:46

So the badly dressed ones were coming from London and Birmingham (are you listening Frank?) NOT indigenous Scousers!!!smile Should have guessed

Deedaa Fri 05-Apr-13 23:26:11

It was the same last year. They were all got up like a really bad hen night and Clare Balding was looking wonderfully elegant in a very stylish winter coat.

glammanana Fri 05-Apr-13 23:24:33

Yesterday in Liverpool Lime St Station we saw a lot of "Aintree" visitors getting off the trains from London and Birmingham all dressed the same as the girls whose photo's where in the Nationals this morning, all the local hotels where also booked up with "Only Way is Essex" look alikes so not all Liverpool girls I think. I am biased though as I think Liverpool girls are the most attractive girls you can meet, until we open our mouths.grin
