I've bought the dress for my sons wedding

I bought a dress online just over 2 years ago for my son`s wedding. When it arrived, I tried it on and was really pleased with it, but I only had it on for a few minutes, then it went away till the wedding day. On the day, I`d only had the dress on for about 10 minutes when I noticed, that the neckline had dropped, and half my bra was on display! It was a new bra, and very pretty, but wasn`t exactly the effect that I`d been looking for! Tried a few things to solve the problem, nothing worked, so ended up wearing a new cream cardigan over the lovely new dress, so disappointing.

I bought the outfits for my children's weddings in posh second-hand shops. For my son's wedding in Spain I had a very elegant dark grey, silk two piece with patterned shawl and specially designed jewellery made by a cousin. I thought it looked really elegant and unusual but when we got to the wedding it just looked very er Spanish.

Is am so impressed with what you have found online - I have never been brave enough to try that route! I think the main reason being I love to feel the fabric first - don't like the feel I never buy. Have you ever had any problems sending back anything that was a disaster? I have plenty of those in fitting rooms!!

Am I the only person who did not buy a new outfit for their child's wedding?

When DS got married I had a desultory look for something new decided that I didn't like anything I had seen so wore a suit I had bought several years earlier. I also had some roses pinned into a French pleat hairdo rather than wear a hat. I checked all this with DS, DDiL to be and her mother and every one was completely happy. Bride's mother was delighted that she could relax about what she wore as well.

I did buy new shoes and a new top to go with the suit.

Jeanie - one of my lovely daughters was married recently. Hers was the first formal wedding I've been to in 40years, and neither I, nor my sisters or best friends had big weddings. Having bought a dress and jacket to "fit in", increasingly I felt I'd be going as myself, in disguise as the Lady Mayoress of Weatherfield. Back went the dress, swopped for charcoal grey silk trousers and a silver vest top. The jacket looked great with them, and I wore heels and a bright purple hat with feathers. It sounds as though your personal dressers have been great - go for it, the outfit sounds fab. I really enjoyed being my daughters wedding, and I was so glad I'd gone the extra mile for the young couple who put on a fabulous do

Grannyknot where did you buy the bolero. I love this dress, but would definitely need something to cover my arms.

Thanks, everyone and Mamie! I feel great in it, swishing down the stairs in my little 2 up 2 down. It only cost £49 (but that's not why I bought it, I bought it because I liked it!) The accessories cost more than the dress. .

Am psyching myself up for a fascinator too ...:P

Jeanie I took my mother in law shopping for her outfit for my son's wedding. We bought a fitted midnight blue dress with bolero jacket; a style and colour she never would have chosen for herself. It was ridiculously exxpensive, but she looked wonderful. Trust your daughter and future daughter in law on this - they only want you to look your best.

I didn't want to match the bridal party for DD wedding. SIL was in uniform so BMs wore forrest green. I had a floaty lilac dress with navy shoes and bag.

Hi Jeanie, I'd also trust your personal shopper's advice. Your outfit sounds great.

I'm also 'mother-of-the-groom' in September this year. I've bought a floaty number off the Just Last Season website, with a matching shawl in the main colour of the dress with satin trim bands and then I found a crochet jacket/bolero to match for the evening ... I never wear something like that, but it looks good! My dress is deep champagne colour with soft pink spots - the colours are just perfect on me. I haven't even started thinking about shoes or horror of horrors a bag! Oh go on, have a look, here's my dress:

jeanie99 how I wish I had taken my DD and future DIL with me when I went shopping for my outfit for DS2s wedding in September,when I got it home and showed them what I had bought they both agreed it was a stunning outfit but the colour was wrong,it was red,long length & with a cropped jacket,my DIL to be said it would not match the dresses and flowers etc on the wedding photo's so a drastic change of plan,now I'm wearing a fitted Frank Usher suit in a silver/grey colour so I am not so "bright" on the photo's so yes take their advice and go with what you first selected and I'm sure you will look amazing,have a lovely day and remember to practice in your heels well before the day because if you are like me you will only wear flatties on a daily basis.

The wedding is at the end of August.
I've also bought shoes with a heel to match and lower shoes for the dancing just need a bag I'm told by the girls.
The last bag I bought was for my daughter about 15 years ago, both said it should be cream to go with the pearls daughter is lending me.

Sometimes Jeanie it is good to step out of your comfort zone .
After all a wedding of one of the offspring is special , and I do not for one nano second believe that your DD"S would guide you the wrong direction .
