Curly Hair help

What is it about hairdressers and curly hair? I have had more bad haircuts than hot dinners. Are they not trained to get the best out of curly hair? They seem to cut it all wrong then out comes the hair dryer and the big brush and it looks like a smooth bouffant do. Next morning the curls are back of course. They ask if I want the GHD tongs. No, I just want a flattering easy to manage style, with curls that look natural.
My mum used to say I looked like the wild woman from Borneo, or an explosion in a mattress factory, or she would say, have you been dragged through a hedge backwards? Not good for my confidence!
For years I wore it cropped really short, but my face is too fat for that now.
Come on, I can't be the only one, surely?

My daughter has very long unruly curly hair. I don't know where on earth it came from as mine is poker straight and her late father didn't really have any to speak of. She can wash it and dry it naturally (which takes forever) and it looks lovely but if f she so much as shows it the hair dryer she ends up like a fizz bomb! She keeps it long as the weight does calm it a little bit.

I have a friend who manages her curly hair herself now - she's given up going to hairdressers who want to smooth it or use tongs. The ony places that seemed to know were very expensive, and she has copied what they did by keeping the layers fairly long, the same length, all over her head. She dries it by leaning over a diffuser, and uses clips and pins or barettes to hold different styles in place. When she leaves it loose, she picks up damp strands, wraps them round her finger and lets them drop into place and won't comb her hair after that, just arrange it. It always looks lovely.

I have wavy/curly hair. I used to keep it really short and had it thinned during my wet cut (no dry). Now that I am retired, I have it layered and to my shoulders. I never go near a dryer or brush, to avoid the fuzzy-wuzzies. Mixed Chicks leave-in conditioner takes a couple of hours to dry naturally but gives a shiny result with lots of body if I scrunch it occasionally as it dries. I wash it on alternate days, spritzing with a water spray on the days between. For the first time in my life I actually like my style! In my youth the fashion was for straight hair with a centre parting, but I could never achieve the look.

Oh I agree straight hair has always been more fashionable - look at Cathy McGowan with long glossy hair and how she peeped out from under her fringe. How I envied her.
All I want is a scissor wizard who knows what he's doing. Otherwise it looks frumpy - I do not want the 'pensioners perm' look.
Will check out mixed Chicks as never heard of it. Been using Rainforest range from body shop.
(When I was a child it was all ringlets and big white ribbons like the character out of Just William! I will thweam and thweam until I am thick!! ) was she Violet??

Mixed Chicks products are available on ebay, not cheap but a giant salon sized bottle lasts for years! They are intended mainly for mixed race hair, but I am white with dark brown hair with a sprinkling of grey.

Hope you find a hairdresser to give you a good cut. My DD does mine for me.

Trevor Sorbie products include a range for curly hair - my sister, who has always had curly - now silver - hair, uses them.

Hi I have curly hair! I have it cut every 6 weeks by a guy who has got them under control for the last 21 yrs! In between his visits I use Argan Oil every other day (Boots) and use John Frieda Frizz Ease dream curls shampoo & conditioner ..also a serum for curly hair..probably Frizz Ease too! I now just wash it every 3-4 days and let it dry naturally! Easy!

Pictures on my profile so you can see if you think it is OK!!

meant to ask if you are near Brighton?? That is where my hairdresser is!

I've never found a hairdresser who can cut my curly hair either, now my hairdresser trained granddaughter cuts it and its okish, still not quite how I want it as I like to straighten it occasionally and there really isn't a style that suits both straight and curly.
I have it longer on top now and shaped to just below my ears... I don't even care anymore if it looks permed.. I swim a lot so need it shortish.. so I wash and dry naturally finger combing it and put some serum in to tame and shine.. when its in need of a cut I put the back up into those tiny little clips/combs and it actually looks really nice but I soon have it hacked back short again..

Your hairstyle is exactly like my friend's nanej (as my previous post). It's a perfect style for curly hair.

Agree with everyone, curly hair needs an expert cutter. Fortunately found my hairdresser about 10 yrs ago and have followed her to another salon.
Sorted the home drying by using a hot air brush dryer, seems to take the frizz out and give gentle body to the hair. Worth every penny, but get one where the brush rotates. Also Moroccan oil spray on wet hair, before drying.x

Have always wished I had curly hair but mine is very fine and straight -even though I ate all my crusts!!

mrsmopp Thu 11-Jul-13 13:54:57

Nanaej that's exactly how I want mine to look!
Lovely loose curls, not the tight little perm look I seem to end up with.
Do you spritz with water before putting on the Argan oil? You might like to know Lidl has the oil now, really cheap. I use it on my face!
I am going to have to move to Brighton unless your hairdresser fancies moving to Devon!

My DiL gave me a bottle of Argan oil as a stocking filler at Christmas. I had plenty of face cream (!!) left so only started using it a month ago. I rub it into my hands then into my face. I commented to her last week how I can see a difference in my skin already.
She looked confused, then politely pointed out it was for my hair hmm
However I'm going to continue to use it on hands and face as well as hair as it seems to work!

nanaej Thu 11-Jul-13 15:14:32

Hmm, Devon might be a bit far for him to travel. i followed him through 3 different salons until he moved to Brighton, now he comes to the house and does my hair and my 2 DDs, DGCs and my DH too!

No I just put a dropper full of the Argan oil on as it is!

Aka in Morocco where Argan oil comes from they use it as a skin conditioner too! When I went to the Hammam in Taroudant that's what they finished my scrub ,bath and massage with!

M
MrsMopp you might find a 'relaxer' helps to loosen the curls a bit!
