Looking for a skirt

I have cold knees. I'm thinking of wearing a skirt over leggings or even jeans for warmth. Since it's the knees that feel the cold, it needs to be a calf-length skirt. I'm having difficulty finding what I want. What I have in mind is what used, I think, to be called a riding skirt – flared anyway for freedom of movement. It needs to be a strongish material too. Flimsy and diaphanous is not what I'm looking for.

Just off to ice a Jamaica ginger cake with home-made ganache (thank you for the idea, whoever it was! smile) and will look forward to finding some ideas to explore.

I think you've got the idea, ana & soop wink

soop Fri 11-Oct-13 13:52:30

bags I like just about everything Gudrun creates. The colours and textures are like works of art.

Ana Thu 10-Oct-13 16:49:13

Is it gorgeous, Bags? smile

Gudrun Sjõdén, YES! grin

Iam64 I can sew but I'm not that good! I bought the material to hand over to the upholsterer who turned my armchair into a thing of beauty! grin

All he had were dralon and synthetic crimplene type materials. Yuk! I bought some lovely pale blue and beige tartan wool upholstery fabric, which had been selling for £75 a metre, and I got it under half price as it was a remnant roll.

blush Thank you, soop.

soop Fri 04-Oct-13 16:32:13

thatbags You, my dear friend, have a lovely face. So there...wink

BTW, sorry if that previous post seems a bit abrupt! It wouldn't be if you heard me say it. smile

Thermals are usually made of plastic (polyester or one of its relations). I hate synthetic fabrics. They don't breathe well (whatever the manufacturers say) so one gets sweaty, plus static builds up. Yuk.

I have some silk and wool leggings. They're good, but cotton is usually fine. It's the two layer thing that gives the extra warmth because you get warm air between the layers.

I bought thermal leggings in M&S last year. They do keep me warm but I think I should have bought a smaller size as I get the Norah Batty effect unless I'm wearing them under trousers.

Lona Fri 04-Oct-13 08:46:51

bags Damart thermals are good too, but probably more choice at M&S.

Iam64 Fri 04-Oct-13 08:41:03

bags - I have some thermal leggings, very thin and toasty - M&S.
Great links above on skirts. When - I didn't realise you're skills extend to sewing, am impressed.

Love gudrun sjoden colours!

thatbags Fri 04-Oct-13 08:07:18

nelliem wink.

greatnan, had to wear a pleated skirt for seven years at school. Not keen partly for that reason, but really because they seem too formal for my taste. They can look fine on other people but are OTT on me. Jackets ditto. Must be my severe face grin

Nelliemoser Fri 04-Oct-13 07:52:11

Twas I That Bags "Home made curtain trousers!" Have you have been watching the "Sound of Music again!" wink

Greatnan Fri 04-Oct-13 07:07:39

Bags, I wear knee supports for my walking and I am afraid you probably would find them too tight and painful.
Do you not like pleated skirts?

thatbags Fri 04-Oct-13 06:15:12

A clothing combination that did work to keep my knees warm and less achy was cotton churidar (from Toast) underneath my home-made curtain trousers. Both these garments were nicely loose so didn't cause unwanted pressure but I wore the two pairs of curtain trousers out over four years and don't have any more suitable curtains to hand. The ones I used (also made by me) had already been used as curtains for about fifteen years so were lovely and soft with no stiffness.

Besides, I'm past my curtain trousers phase.

I'm going with Gudrun at the moment. Order has been made. If the outfit works, maybe I'll post a pic on my profile... smile

I do appreciate all the ideas flowers

Thank you, vegas. I know it isn't a wind up because not only do I also have a knitting pattern for knee warmers (it belonged to my gran), but I have tried them. The problem is that they slip down. They'd be great if you were stting still all the time, I suppose. Or maybe they were supposed to be worn under your stockings....

You can get neoprene knee supports (a running friend has some) which I have considered but I suspect they would be rather tight.

Difficult? Fussy? Me?

Get your angora knee warmers here

I have a very old book of knitting patterns which contains a pattern for knee warmers, Bags. (It has some other crackers, including knitted vests for men!) I know it sounds a bit peculiar, but I imagine they would be very warm and cosy, without adding too much bulk. If you are interested pm me with your address, and I will photocopy the pattern and send it off to you. I know this sounds like a wind up, but honestly it isn't!

Remnant Kings were another of my clients when I was at Mystery Shoppers Ltd sad

On one of our visits to House of Bruar, we couldn't help but notice the couple who had arrived to buy more of what they were wearing. They were both kitted out, head to toe in, straight out of the catalogue complete outfits.
My first thought was 'are you wearing that for a bet'?

I'm another Scot who could not wear these outfits and keep a straight facegrin

Agus Thu 03-Oct-13 19:57:50

Hello bags' I have just done a reccy online and found cashmere blend leggings in Matalan for £16. Not cheap for leggings I know but I was thinking the warmth of the cashmere might be worth it.

I live in East Ren, not far from a Matalan store, if these are of interest to you, I can check them out/post them up to you. Would be no trouble at all.

You realise your attire will now be closely scrutinised at the Edinburgh meet-up Bags grin

ffinnochio Thu 03-Oct-13 19:19:18

grin

thatbags Thu 03-Oct-13 18:46:33

That is a very nice skirt, jane, thank you. However, that ffinnochio has set me off on the Gudrun trail now and I'm having a lot of fun grin. Just hope I can carry it off!
